    1. [WSX] GUNN in Hanwell or Marston areas
    2. Alan Smith
    3. I am seeking information about GUNNs in the Banbury & Oxford areas, particularly Hanwell & Marston. I know there are GUNNs in the family but have no information about them. I am wondering whether they come from one of these areas particularly if there are any connections with Broughton, as it is possible they are related through the women marrying GUNNs. I am looking for a connection between the HUTCHINGS of Broughton Fulling Mill & GUNNs. Any help/pointers would be appreciated. Catherine Shingler Folkestone

Som I have searched the Winsham, Winscombe and Emborough Parish registers cannot find the birth of Robert or the marriage of Robert Perham and Ann? Robert died 28 August 1859 aged 77 so born around 1782. Would be thankful for any suggestions. Regards Ann New zealand.

    1. [WSX] Harriet WILKES/JOBBINS
    2. J/S/R Greenwood
    3. Hi, I am new to the list. I am trying to find out what happened to Harriet. On the 1 Aug 1857 she married Henry JOBBINS in the parish of Berkely, Glo. They arrived in Sydney on the 1 Dec 1857. On the 9 Nov 1859 Henry married again. He said he was a bachelor. There is no death record for Harriet in NSW so I assume she returned home. Would really like to what happened to her. Would she have assumed her maiden name or what? I found a baptism for a Harriet WILKES on the 24 Jul 1831, in the parish of Berkely, which gave her parents as Henry and Celia Wilkes. Would also be interested in making contact with anyone else researching JOBBINS. Regards Susanna Greenwood (nee Jobbins) Sydney

Hi Annette Sincere apologies - this should have read (slight change to first and second paragraphs) To answer your last question first: Births & Deaths at Sea returns (known as the Marine Register Book) commenced on 1st July 1837 and relate to those events occurring at sea on any ship registered in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This series can be seen at 1 Myddelton Street London EC1R 1UW: Apart from Births, marriages and deaths at sea, 1854-1890 I can't find them in the LDS Catalogue under England, but I haven't looked too hard as there is a lot of material to scan through. But, from anecdotal comment, there appear to be many exceptions to the rule and some registrations are thought to have occurred at the port of arrival or have not been transferred from the Ship's Log. I'm not sure what sort of sailor you are referring to ie Merchant or Royal Navy, but as Paul states RN personnel at sea are included in the Northern Borders and Miscellany CD of the LDS CD set for 1881, although again I'm not too sure how complete this is. However, if your man was in the Merchant Navy only those along side on the night of the census are included, although I have heard anecdotal evidence that some ships that may have been or were expected to be in UK coastal waters at the time of the census are also have been included. The crews of RN Ships alongside in the UK and those merchant navy vessels mentioned above are included within the enumeration for the town at which they were berthed on the night of the census, but for those in coastal waters I wouldn't like to hazard a guess as to where you might find them! 3. Arrangements are now well in hand for the "Count Me In" 2001 UK Census. If any of you UK residents fancy being part of this event, there is still time to apply for jobs as enumerators. Appointments will be made in March. You will each deliver forms to about 400 homes between 9 and 27 April. The work load is light and anyone with a job could handle it working just evenings and weekends. Most of the forms will be posted back - we hope - and enumerators will only be out again between the 9 and 18 May to follow up forms not returned. The pay is about £400 + expenses. The forms will come as a bit of a shock to genies who are familiar with the bare-bones data of previous censuses. Lots of questions about work and travel are now included, but you will only be asked the country you were born in, nothing more. I am a census team leader for part of Bristol. If anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer them. Later on there will be a free Census Help-Line. Ernie Bull Bristol, UK.

    2. Hi Listers, In conjunction with the question as to how sailors at sea were handled on the census, I would be interested in knowing the same information regarding those who served in the military. Did the military conduct its own census and publish it separately? If so, where would I be able to find that information? Thanks, Mary Lu in California
