    3. It might be an idea to see if Annie Eliza remarried after the death of her husband. If she did remarry, her death would be under another name. After all she was only 44 when he died. Good luck. 1. [WSX] TAYLOR/ HEALE PUZZLE- NEED HELP
    2. Hi all, I've just spent a good deal of time looking over the baptisms and burials lists from Wootton Bassett for HEALE's and TAYLOR's and have come to the conclusion that all the HEALE's/HALE's were related one to another and ditto the TAYLOR's. HEALE's/HALE'S even married TAYLOR's and vice versa. And I have found a big puzzle. Walter TAYLOR, baptized October 10,1747 and son of William TAYLOR and Edeth OGBORNE, married Meriam RIX (RICKS) September 23, 1771. Joanna HEALE married Walter TAYLOR November 6, 1794. The only Joanna HEALE I can find is a daughter of George HEALE and Mary JEFFRIES and she was baptized on April 4, 1770. Now, under burials I find found a Miriam TAYLOR, age 65, buried October 6, 1811 which would make her born about 1846 and that would make her a likely candidate to be Walter TAYLOR's wife. There is no other Meriam/Miriam listed up to 1837. I can't find another Walter TAYLOR born in a time period that would be closer to Joanna's age. In fact the baptisms only have the one Walter baptised between 1747 and 1802. Does anyone have any solutions to this? Would deeply appreciate any help. Best, Joan in Freeport N.Y. where we are being told we could have up to two feet of snow over the next two days. Hope the forecast is wrong and electricity stays on.

I can say that as I live over the water on Portland :-) Apologies for "in" joke! They were two separate towns either side of the harbour and such was the rivalry between them at times, especially over the harbour rights, that it is said that they lobbed cannon balls at each other from time to time! However, times changed and the two boroughs had their heads knocked together, and eventually they combined to form the Melcombe Regis and Weymouth Corporation or some such. If you look at the census for 1881 along the sea front and the streets behind you will find that this area is classified as Melcombe Regis ie the area to the North of the harbour Weymouth was the area to the South and West of the harbour including Chapelhay and the brewery etc. Regret I don't have a census index for 1851 for Weymouth - only the Bridport and Lyme Regis area. You might be best advised to ask on the Dorset List: subscribe address: DORSET-L-request@rootsweb.com where I'm sure someone should be able to help you if your man was enumerated in either town then: you should also include Wyke Regis in your search area as this parish was, I believe, senior to Weymouth at the time and spread down into areas that are now considered to be a part of Weymouth. You might also like to note that one of the alternative spellings for Dukes down here, amongst others was possibly Jukes: probably something to do with the accent ie if you don't come up with anything for Dukes it might be worth trying Jukes just in case! Although, if he'd completed the census form himself this shouldn't be a problem! Regards Paul Portland

    3. You get see the Census records on microfilm through the Mormon Family History Libraries. I would also point out, that particularly when asking for help, it is useful to give your town of residence. Knowing the place of residence of the requestor greatly influences the quality and relevance of advice that can be given. I can see from Annette's email address does not provide sufficient information to identify her location. Her reference to the Record Office suggests that she is in Britain, but does not indicate in which end of the country she is situated. 3. Hi Alec The Dorset County Record Office at Dorchester hold The General Register Office indexes to births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales 1837-1992. Alternatively, if you are fairly certain she died Southampton another option may be to approach Southampton Corporation to ask them to search their cemetery records, but I wouldn't know what sort of fee they are likely to charge, if any? Perhaps the Hants FHS may have indexed these records?
