Hello Don, Original Message on Wessex List:- > >Would anyone on the list have access to a business directory or other >resource listing the cheese makers in Somerset in the 1870s. If so, would >there be a KELLAWAY, CALLAWAY, BARRETT or WALKEY listed as a cheese maker? > I think you may have to be a bit more specific - I have a Directory dated 1872, but to trawl through each City / Town / Village, etc., would take ages. I'm willing to have a look, but in which area? Mike Dean Freckleton, Lancashire, UK 60today@mjdean99.freeserve.co.uk

I have just received a copy of the Phillimore catalogue for 200/2001 listing British Local and Family History publications for sale. Books are listed by county, and cover the whole of the UK and Channel Islands. They have a web page at: www.phillimore.co.uk I understand they regularly handle overseas orders. G'day >From the BVRI HICK, Thirza Christening Sex: Female Christening Date: 28 May 1826 Recorded in: Westbury-On-Trym, Gloucester, England Father: George HICK Mother: Mary Source: FHL Number 1595527 Dates: 1714-1838 This is the only bapt to George and Mary. On Thirza's marriage in VIC and on the birth of her child her maiden name is given as KICK. Likewise on her death in 1878 (after a second marriage) her father is given as George KICK. Any knowledge about this difficult name? Could it be HICKS? No sign of any likely family I can see on 1851 Bristol or GLS census, except for a tempting looking family, George & Mary HICKS at Bitton. I assume Thirza was either in Oz or on her way in 1851. Please note this is not my family; an entry on my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index. Hi Anne, You very well be correct.... I have been researching / collecting data on the Prater family for over 35 years and currently have a very large database on the family here in the USA. I also have taken those here in the USA, New Zealand and Australia back to the same family in England. My database totals 45,843 ... this includes wives, children, an some info. on allied families (but very little). The spelling variations that I have found thus far are: Prater, Prator, Pretor, Preator, Preater, Prayter, Praytor, Prayther, Praither, Prather, Prether, Prattor, Pratter and Prater-Penny. I have also seen records in England that state Prater alias Pearce or Pierce. AND I have seen Prater alias Proctor !!! ..... Very Close to your Prector! This was in Wiltshire. I am VERY interested to know about the listing in 1301 in Surrey !!!! Can you expand on that for me? Most of my family were in Wiltshire (John Prater, Esq. died 1547 Inglesham, Wilts. His tomb is located in the old 11th century St. John the Bapt. Church. He built the Chancel on the church where his tomb is located. His son, George Prater, Esq. lived at Latton, Wilts. and is buried in the 3 isle, 7th row in the floor of the church there in Latton. He died in 1564. George Prater, Esq. purchased the Delamare estates from Sir William Paulett and Georges oldest son, Richard moved into Nunney Castle, the major seat of these estates.. Richard died in 1580 and his effigy & tomb is located in All Saints Church in Nunney, Somerset. I descend from Anthony Thomas Prater, the 2nd. born son of George Prater, Esq. Anthony was excommunicated for his "extorsionate practices" and his branch of the family almost everything.... it was his grandson, Thomas Prater, that came to the American Colonies in 1622. I have found branches of the family in Cornwall, Devon, Berks, Glouc., London, Oxfords. with the spelling of Prater, Praytor, Pretor and Preator. I have found some records on others that I have not yet connected to the family. Thanks for your reply! Hope to hear from you soon. Gary Benton Prather Frisco, Texas USA / gbprather@aol.com
I am trying to find information on Anne SMITH. All I have is that she married Richard WHITE at Clanfield, Oxfordshire 19 Nov 1849. The census says she was born at Collingbourne, Wilts. Her father is William. Is it possible that anyone else on the list is searching this family. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kay (Ontario, Canada)
I am looking for information about where someone in the Eversley area may have worked as a gardener. My 3x great grandfather Francis WELCH was a gardener by profession. He married Eliza BOURN(e) who was born in Eversley & his son James was born there in 1836. Any thoughts most welcome. thanks, Catherine Shingler Temporarily residing in Folkestone
I am seeking ANY information on Praters (etc) that lived in Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucester and Berkshire. I currently have many on file that lived at Nunney (near Frome) in Somerset and other branches of same family living in Wiltshire in early 1500's. (re; Nunney Castle) There are other groups of the family living in Berks. & Glou. that I have not connected to the family in Wilts. yet. But I do not have much info. on any members of these families after the 1600. Thanks!! Gary Benton Prather Frisco, Texas U.S.A. / gbprather@aol.com
Seeking information about "Wilton Castle on the River Wylie/Wylye." After a number of inquiries, no one seems to know anything about the subject. My questions are: Is there only one Wylye River? The only one I can find is in Wiltshire. Secondly, how many castles are associated with Wylye River? My WILTON ancestors are somehow connected with this castle. Thanks, by the way, to Jill, Paul, and Peter for helping me to get the Parish Locator up and running. This has been an invaluable tool in researching my UK ancestors. Thanks Again, Aaron Wilton babycody@tca.net College Station, TX, USA

Helping us helping you continued...... The Wessex list covers 9 counties - if you know which county your query involves - please tell us! Some of us are less than knowledgeable when it comes to hamlets and villages outside our own locality, but as many of us are also researching our own families in distant counties within the area we may have just collected the bit of information that can help you eg I and my wife have rellies in 7 of the 9 counties! And if you don't know please ask! I know we all try, but for the absent minded or forgetful ones amongst us (which includes me) if sks* has taken the time to reply at least hit the reply button and say "Thanks" there and then - thats all it takes: even if you have got the info already :-)) And if you've got this far thanks for reading! Happy hunting Regards Paul Portland *sks = some kind soul

Hi All, I've been through all the Baptism records for Wootton Bassett and just can't find Susannah WHEELER who married William TAYLOR in Wootton Bassett on November 12,1798. The marriage record I received says "banns of marriage were published on the 2nd quarter and 16th days of September 1798." And it also says that both TAYLOR and WHEELER were "of this parish." But she wasn't of the parish before then. In fact, a check of WHEELER's in the Wootton Bassett Baptisms through 1837 reveals that although this family was living in Wootton Bassett in 1565 but no more births were registered for the WHEELER name after 1666 and no burials after 1683. then suddenly there was one burial of a Mary WHEELER, age 41 in 1820. So, where did all the WHEELER's go? Why this sudden departure from Wootton Bassett? Did something occur to the WHEELER fortunes that caused an upheaval. They were landholders at one time in Wootton Bassett showing up on the Kingsbridge Hundred Ships Tax List of 1635. Any clues or hints as to where I should go from here to my Great Grandmother 4x Susannah WHEELER? Any help deeply appreciated. And I can do lookups in Wootton Bassett for Baptism and Burials to 1837. Best, Joan in Freeport,N.Y.
