    1. [WSX] Re: LISTS of Rootsweb Lists
    2. Hello list members Many times we see the request for names of other rootsweb lists, many people join this list as someone told them of it and how to join, but are not aware of the overall scheme of things As a result of many requests I have built a list of rootsweb lists sorted by county in the major regions England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Some counties are covered by many lists. The Hampshire Genealogical Society Computer Group has a web site at http://www.web-community.co.uk/hgs Follow the index on the left of screen Where there is an introduction to rootsweb and a full list of the relevant lists. By using the links provided, you can go to any of the lists, subscribe or unsubscribe, browse the archives, or search the archives. You don't have to join the list to search the archives. There are many other goodies with links to major web pages, have a look see and then book mark the site. We are continually adding useful links Graham Ledbrook Web Master HGS Computer Group Dorset England

    3. Hi Susana The Somerset Record Office holds or is responsible for all the Parish Registers for Somerset, apart from those that have been lost, are incomplete and are still in the hands of the incumbent or that may be at the Bristol Records Office? or non-conformist Registers such as those deposited at the Public Records Office in London ie they are responsible for Somerset's Archives: the registers they hold are detailed at: http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/asp/listal.asp?Database=../_private/parish.mdb&File=ParishSummary&Field=Parish which includes Wells and Yatton Like most ROs I expect that the SRO has transcriptions of most of the PRO holdings. However, as Mandy says the Somerset Studies Library does appear to hold some PRs eg Dinnington parish registers: marriages 1784-1837, but these also appear to be held by the SRO, at least on fiche, according the above URL :-) For details of Library holdings do a search using "Parish Registers" or whatever on the search engine at: http://www.foursite.somerset.gov.uk/ The cost of and conditions for buying fiche (the only form of media at present I believe) are given on the following URL: http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/disomanc.htm Not cheap, but when one considers the cost of travel and maybe hotel expenses etc it probably works out as quite reasonable? Unfortunately ROs are not expected to make a loss on things they sell, so no doubt they are not making much more than about 5%, I wouldn't have thought. I understand that the LDS/Mormons haven't been allowed to copy Wells PRs! Details of records held by other repositories can be seen by taking links from: http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/others.htm Regards Paul Portland On Fri, 9 Mar 2001 13:44:12 -0000, you wrote: >Greetings, > >I'm new to the list and wanted to say hello and state my interests. We now have approaching the 1500 photographs mark and plenty still arriving daily. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to date. There are quite a few new bits and pieces on the site that may be on interest. but could I ask that everyone take a look at one page in particular. The *Unplaced Photographs* Page. Due to computer problems a while back I lost a lot of email containing details of photographs that I had been sent. If anyone recognises one of these pictures could you please contact me so it can be placed in the correct section. Work is also underway now contacting record offices to discuss putting a comprehensive list of their holdings on the relevent page for each county (an example of which can be seen via the Glamorgan pages). I would also like to ask everyone who may know of any publications available for individual schools, whether in book, microfiche or any other format to contact me with the details so that these may be added to the site. Once again, thank you all for your continued support. Kind Regards Kim www.schoolphotos.f2s.com Listowner UK-SCHOOLS-L@rootsweb.com Chairwoman UK Schools History Group.

    1. Re: [WSX] Is Wilton Castle at Wardour?
    2. Helen Jones
    3. To add a little to Geoff's message about Wardour: There is a chapel at Wardour Castle (it is in the 'new' Castle built in the 1780s). The old castle (where Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was filmed) was destroyed in the Civil War and is now owned by English Heritage and open to the public. The 'new' castle (a large house really) is now in private hands. The Chapel of All Saints Wardour is Catholic and you will find that it was used by the workers on the Arundell Estate at Wardour which had the largest Catholic community outside of London in 18th and 19th centuries. The All Saints records are on film at the Wiltshire Record Office and there is a copy at the SoG. I don't think the LDS were given permission to film them. If you have lost ancestors in this part of Wiltshire it is well to remember Wardour. People may well have moved from the Arundell estate to other large estates in the vicinity. Many (inlcuding my own ancestors) only remained catholic whilst in the employ of the Arundells. Wardour is not on the Wylie - it is close to the Nadder . Wilton is a house rather than a Castle. It was originally built and owned by the HERBERT family. It is situated in the town of Wilton. The surname Wilton is location - coming from places of that name in Wiltshire, Cumbria, Herefordshire, Norfolk, Somerset and East and West Yorkshire. People usually gained locational surnames after they had moved away from a place as a means of distinguishing themselves back in the middle ages - 12th-14th centuries when surnames formed. Thus John from Wilton who moved to Salisbury would become John de Wiltone to distinguish him from John the short, John the Baker, John who lived by the hill etc. Helen Helen Jones in Weymouth, Dorset, UK List Admin Dorset-L Scammell-L hsj@melcombe.freeserve.co.uk http://www.melcombe.freeserve.co.uk/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Geoff Hallett" <hallett@king.igs.net> To: <WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 09, 2001 1:54 PM Subject: [WSX] Is Wilton Castle at Wardour? > >

    3. Greetings, I'm new to the list and wanted to say hello and state my interests. I've just received information from the 1881 census that suggests some of my Chamberlain ancestors came from Somerset. Which is probably why I couldn't find them in London where my GGrandmother Harriet Maria CHAMBERLAIN spent 56 of her 77 years, also seems she was born in Rhymney, Monmouth....The people I'm hoping to get further information on are Harriet's parents: John CHAMBERLAIN, born c1841 in Yatton, Somerset or his wife Eliza PARFITT, born c1841 in Wells, Somerset. Also can anyone tell me if the parish registers for Yatton and/or Wells in the 1840 time period are available on either fiche, booklet or CD? If they are where can I purchase them from? Susana

    3. Hello all, I'm new to this list and would like to say hello and post my interests. I am researching my BRIMBLE ancestors and believe that they lived in Somerset ca. 1848. My g-grandfather, David J. BRIMBLE b: December 11, 1872 in Ystradyfodwg, Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales d: December 19, 1937 in Lansford, Carbon County, PA, USA. His birth certificate states that his parents were James BRIMBLE & Ellen HUGHES. Their marriage certificate shows that they were married 25 March 1872 in Sardis Chapel Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales. According to US Census info, James BRIMBLE was born March 1848. The only James BRIMBLE that I discovered that was born March 1848 was the son of James BRIMBLE & Ann BRIMBLE formerly SMITH. He was born 22 March 1848, Wells, Somerset. (The residence of the father appears to be Abbott Wootten. I could be wrong about the spelling, as it is difficult to read.) I read that many Somerset people migrated across the Bristol Channel to south Wales in the 18th and 19th centuries, looking for work. So I am hopeful that the James Brimble from Wells is my ancestor. I have searched the 1851 Census for Glamorgan Wales and have found no sign of Brimbles being there at that time period. I'm assuming that they must not have migrated yet. If anyone has access to the 1851 Census and would be willing to lookup this family in the Wells, Somerset area, I would be extremely grateful! The family group would be as follows: James Brimble (head of household) Ann Brimble (wife) James Brimble (son) ~3 years old [it is not known if there were other children] Many thanks for any help with this!
