    3. Hi Listers I couldn't stay away from this great site! I've now discovered a 2xg-grandmother in my husband's family, named Julia BUCKLAND,b 3 Mar 1830. She married James Charles HALE in Fisherton Anger, 11 Jan 1854. Well, it looks like Anger in the family bible, but could be Angel. Either way, I can't locate it, not even on Multimap. Could SKS please tell me whether I'm looking for the right name? And of course, if anyone is researching these names I'll be delighted to hear from them Kind regards Joy

    3. Just remember that if you were married in 1870, & born after 1837 you stood a good chance of not having a birth certificate as it was'nt compulsory to register births until 1875. "Sod's Law Prevails", in my experience it's those about whom you want to know most who were'nt registered - or even included in the 1881 census!! In addition to the points already made, you should be aware of the possibility that John George was an older brother who died in infancy. Re-use of the same or very similar name in these circumstances was very common. ------------------------------------------------------------ Jim Fisher in Luton, Beds, UK. jim@jimella.co.uk Personal site: http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~jimella/home.htm Management accounting site: http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~jimella/

    3. Hi Michael! If you are in the Latin period, the more likely words for Senior and Junior would be "major" and "minor" but the word "senior" is in any case only the comparative forrm of senex ie the elder. So I should regard the abbrevaited "Sen" after the name in all but a burial record as definitely senior and senex would be more likely to be spelled out in full Cheers Paul Alternative Address: mountpleasant@goginan.fsbusiness.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tut" <tut@tutton.org> To: <WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 16, 2001 2:12 AM Subject: [WSX] Latin/Middle English > Hello all. > > I'm doing the parish record transcription thing and I need a bit of help > with the word "senex" > > My Latin dictionary says "senex" means "old (over 45) old man, old woman". > > Sometimes the records say "senex" other times they say "sen." > > I'm wondering if "sen." means senior or if it is short for "senex"? > > Can "senex" mean senior or is the only meaning of "senex" "old"? > > I don't think I could have been more confusing if I tried. > > Thanks in advance. > > P.S. My great grandfather was christened and buried [ certificates for both events agree ] as James Charles Bartlett HALLETT yet was married, also in 1870, as Charles James Bartlett HALLETT and was known as Charles. I assume this was to avoid confusion with his father James. If I were Annette I would put my money on buying the certificate for John George CAWTE to see if parents are correct. 1. [WSX] SENEX
    2. Dear Michael and all friends, Latin was thrust upon and into me at school. Our master, Hector Raymod Gilleard, told us that, 'One day, you'll find it useful!' and he was right, for the day has arrived! "SENEX" meant, according to him, specifically an 'old man', as the noun is masculine. The word for an old woman is "ANUS". Iain, in Brampton, Cumbria, UK

    3. Hi Annette No, there is no need to produce a birth certificate for a marriage. The fact that those who have been married sign the certificate in the presence of two witnesses, who also sign, is deemed adequate, as my parents found to their cost when they had to order a copy from Somerset House following the loss of the original in a fire. When they received the copy they discovered that an error had been made and requested a correction. Somerset House explained that as they had signed the original certificate they were certifying that it was correct: however further investigation revealed that the copy held by the church where they were married was correct, so it was just the copy sent to Somerset House that was wrong. It took another two years for Somerset House to agree to a correction being made. I still have some of the correspondence. Perhaps like my parents you have an error ? It is interesting to note that on my grandmother's birth cert she is known as Annie Mabel, but on the marriage cert she is shown as Mabel Annie: not quite the same, but the very devil to find in the GRO's Index :-) And on the same marriage certificate her father is noted as John Samuel Kinsey, whereas he was christened Samuel Kinsey, which is also how he appears on Annie's birth cert. I have been advised that the John came about because as a Butler he was known as John by the family he worked for and decided to adopt it as a part of his name. In summary, there is probably no easy answer! All you can do is follow the trail back to the best of your ability with the information you have available. 3. Hello all. I'm doing the parish record transcription thing and I need a bit of help with the word "senex" My Latin dictionary says "senex" means "old (over 45) old man, old woman". Sometimes the records say "senex" other times they say "sen." I'm wondering if "sen." means senior or if it is short for "senex"? Can "senex" mean senior or is the only meaning of "senex" "old"? I don't think I could have been more confusing if I tried. Thanks in advance. P.S. I'll be doing this with other words over the next few weeks, as I near the end of the burials. -Michael- www.tutton.org
