Can anyone on the list give me any information on the HOSSOM family? Following recent research (and thanks due to Phil Mustoe for his transcriptions) I have sorted out my links with the HOSSOMS who lived in Dunster (Som) until the early 19th century. Most of the males seemed to be called John! The line seems to die out with Rachel and her children who took the name as an additional family name - Mary Hossom PRIDEAUX. Can any one tell me where they came from before Terrill HOSSOM was baptised in 1723. His father, John would have been been born ca.1700 but not in Dunster. Thanks, Steve (UK)
Hello everyone! I've just joined the list and am posting my surname interests as follows: CANNON and/or CANNONS (an illiterate bunch!). Hi All I am new to this list. I am researching the above names (and a few more listed below) in the Pewsey vale area and would love to hear from anyone with similar interests. >Chocolate Lane'' in Bristol, around 1909-1914 Chock Lane in Westbury on Trym, possibly - still there today. If not could it be something to do with Fry's chocolate factory areas in central Bristol? Dear all, I'm still not sure if the Wiltshire Emigrants list is the right one to use, as so far I have found no Emigrants beyond a 12 mile move in Gloucestershire, but here goes anyway: My Hulberts are descended from Gifford HULBERT married to Joan Chapman in Grittleton in 1703 - via Thomas and Ann Hulbert, to William and Betty (Smith) Hulbert to James Hulbert and Mary TAVINER. Their son George born 1798 moved via Yatton Keynall to Hawkesbury where he was married in 1819. If anyone can link into this family at all, I'd love to hear from you - each generation apart from the last listed (George) seem to have many children per family - George has, as far as I have found, no siblings. Marilyn Milton Keynes
Joy Hungerford asked about the technique required to squeeze a list of children from FamilySearch. Paul Benyon replied with the technique using the batch number, which gets out all children if the family in the same batch - usually all the children in the same parish. There is an alternative, which gets children in several parishes. Don't put any names for the child - not even the surname. Put in the surname and forename of the father, and the forename of the mother. You can choose a country and county, and a range of years. You cannot choose exact spelling. As an example, put Michael Cass as name of father, Mary as name of mother, British Isles as region. You get 9 matches, with two parishes in Yorkshire and one in Lincoln - and it is all one family (and it's mine!). If you get too many hits it is worth adding the maiden name of the mother - but this loses a lot of genuine matches where the mother's maiden name is not in the record. For example, try children of Henry Hawgood and Maria, then try children of Henry Hawgood and Maria Pennestone - the first gives children from different families in Pembrokeshire and Rutland, the second reduces it to the family in Rutland. regards, David Hawgood.
Hi Listers, Does anyone know of a ''Chocolate Lane'' in Bristol, around 1909-1914. TIA Annette South Wales u.k.
Ref Ernie Bulls's Piece about the Census. Please Ernie can I be excused the Census this year as I am living in Turkey. Mind you, we seem to have censuses every five years or so and they do it differently here. There is a complete curfew from 6.00AM until 6,00 PM while the enumerators come round though they do not seem very interested in foriegn passport holders. One year we were in Istanbul and the mayor, concious of his tourist industry, excused all foriegners from the curfew. If any listers have ever had to contend with Istanbul's normal traffic can they picture what it was like without any traffic. We went to the Topkapi Palace walking in complete safety up the middle of the road, but when we got there what did we have, hundreds of Japanese Tourists taking pictures of each other. To keep this mail on the Wessex Gen map are there any searchers out there who are interested in the Chase families from the Meon Valley area of Hampshire. I have not heard a peep out of any of them since I joined the list. Denis

In my search for the elusive WILLIAM ASHFORD JEFFERY/JEFFERIES I have stablished that he claims to have been born in Bristol about 1815, one possible sighting is from the registers of St Mary Redccliffe Baptism 30th April 1815 WILLIAM son of WILLIAM and ANN JEFFERIES, William being a Brass founder. There also were other children to this couple as follows Baptism 16th August 1818 born 3rd June CHARLOTTE daughter of WILLIAM and ANN JEFFERIES brass founder Baptism 3rd June 1811 SARAH ANN daughter of WILLIAM and ANN JEFFERY born 22 Jan 1808 Baptism 28th Sept 1806 SARAH ANN daughter of WILLIAM and ANN JEFFERIES and at ST JAMES church Bristol Baptism 30th January 1815 SARAH ANN daughter of WILLIAM and ANN JEFFERIES of Redcliffe parish Brass founder. WILLIAM ASHFORD JEFFERY?JEFFERIES mother was I believe an ANN and according to census returns she was born in Gloucestershire. If any of these are part of your family or you can help me complete the missing link I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks Richard Jeffery Sussex by the Sea.
I found the following online and ask for help from anyone who is familiar with Litton Parish. Does this farm exist today? Are the occupants named SAGE? Is anything known of the original owners of this farm? http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/maps/os62htm/2803.htm **** 'Sage's Farm' my notes: Far left, scroll down / south of Quarry and watercourse "Watery Combe" - southwest of 'Ford Farm' - west of Chewton Farm/southwest of Chewton Mendip (Ordnance Survey 1:10560 County Series 2nd edition (c.1900) map of the area provided by Somerset Record Office.) My husband's ancestors were Jesse SAGE and Anna VOWALS/VOWELLS of Litton Parish. A number of their offspring emigrated as adults to what is now Brant County, Ontario - about 1840. Brothers Jesse, George and Walter SAGE settled in Brantford Township. With best wishes from a new list member, Frances Bishop
