A friend of mine put me onto this little trick - switch the father's name with the mother's name and vise versa. He found two more children listed for his family using this tip. Debbie Jeans, CG(C) Certified Genealogist (Canada) St.John's, Newfoundland

G'day Have bought second a small volume "Letters of an Australian Pioneer Family 1827-1880" published in 1984 by the Association of the BUCKNALL family of VIC [ISBN 0 9590680 0 7] It contains transcripts of letters between 3 generations of an extended GLS family which began leaving the Stroud district of GLS in 1839: William PRICE ( b 1783 son of Stephen PRICE & Sarah MATTHEWS) and his wife Ann (b 1798 dau of Leonard PEGLER & Elizabeth BAYLEY) arrived Sydney NSW 1839 "Argyle" as Bounty Immigrants with their 8 chn Jane PRICE sister of William married John TUCKER; their dau Sarah TUCKER bc1807 married Edward Gittins BUCKNALL ( b 1797 son of Samuel BUCKNALL and Ann CLISSOLD); they arrived Port Phillip VIC 1843 "Lord Keane" with 6 chn; 2 more were born VIC. The property they selected in VIC to farm they called Rodborough Vale. Ann Mary (Mary Ann) TUCKER bc1824, sister to the above, came with them on the voyage; she fell in love with a Richard SUTTON, a fellow passenger, described as a "son of one of the county families near Stroud"; they married later in VIC. Stephen Price TUCKER bc1805 brother of above, arrived in VIC 1859 per "Sussex"; he had apparently originally gone to Wisconsin USA. Eliza TUCKER sister of above bc1825 arrived in VIC 1856 per "Morning Star" supposedly accompanying her sister Sarah BUCKNALL after the latter had taken her 3 younger sons to be schooled at Rhode House Rodborough. While there the 3 BUCKNALL boys lived with their Aunt & uncle, the Edwin BUCKNALLs of Rodborough. Edwin BUCKNALL, son of Edwin above, bc1825, arrived VIC 1857 per "Guy Mannering" with his wife Ellen nee WAKEFIELD, and their 2 sons Hugh & Charles; 4 more chn reg VIC. Frank BUCKNALL son of Edwin above, bc1831, arrived VIC 1852 "Prince Albert" Robert BUCKNALL son of Edwin above, bc1835, arrived VIC c1854 Edward Gittins BUCKNALL brought with him 2 workers Jessie TELLING bc1824 Stroud, carpenter and Samuel MARTIN bc1822 Stroud, labourer, with his wife Harriet nee TIPTON b 1816 Newent. The letters are a gold mine for direct family; they describe conditions in both VIC and GLS, and follows family members to QLD and Natal in South Africa. Unfortunately the book is not indexed, but if anyone has a particular interest I could attempt to check for a name or event. Of interest to me was the motivation of Edward Gittins BUCKNALL, a prosperous businessman, in migrating to the undeveloped colony of VIC. He makes it clear that his motivation was the welfare of his chn; his eldest sons were opposed to any business other than farming, and farming in England was unprofitable. Prospects for the young were very gloomy, trade was declining and there was little hope for improvement. Edward Gittins had been a very successful jeweller in Stroud; he is believed to have taken £2,000 in gold and jewellery with him to VIC to set up his 'county estate'. Please note this is not my family; an entry for my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index. Regards Kaye Kaye Purnell <kayepur@ozemail.com.au> Ancestors from GLS who came to Oz? hi I am wondering if anyone has census indexes for wiltshire. I am searching for Samuel Williams and Isabella nee dando. Their son was born in 1858 in New swindon Wiltshire but i cannot confidently find any of them on the 1881 census. I have searched the GRO for parents marriage but as I have no idea of when they married I could so easily have overlooked the listing when trolling through endless quarters. I am hoping to find the couple on a census. sorry if this is an impossible question. i dont mean for anyone to look through fische, but if it is indexed and someone has access that would be great thank you kerri in australia
Hi Listers: I'm back on this list after a month or so hiatus to digest a lot of wonderful info I have received. I have learned that my great-great grandfather, Isaac DAVIS, was born in Biddestone to Rachael/Rachel DAVIS. Unfortunately, he was baseborn as were his siblings. I'm worried that this will become my brick wall, and I don't want that to happen! Here's what I know: 1.George, bastard son of Rachael Davis, born 30 Sept. 1785, baptised 13 July 1794 2.Hannah, bastard daughter of Rachael Davis, born 23 Sept. 1787, baptised 13 July 1794. 3.Dinah, bastard daughter of Rachael Davis, born 06 June 1794, baptised 13 July 1794.(Dinah died 12 Aug. 1794) 4.Lidy, bastard daughter of Rachel Davis, born 04 Feb. 1796, baptised 21 Feb. 1796. 5.Isaac, bastard son of Rachael Davis, born 30 May 1797, baptised 04 June 1797 (Isaac died in Brooklyn, New York, USA in 1860) Next, Hannah DAVIS is shown with her baseborn children (at least I think these are the children of the Hannah shown above--it would have made her almost 18 years old at the time of her first childs birth.) 1.William Blake, bastard son of Hannah Davis, born 13 July 1805, baptised 04 Aug 1805. 2.Mary Ann, bastard daughter of Hannah Davis, born 01 Aug. 1808, baptised 07 Aug. 1808. 3.Thomas Cox, bastard son of Hannah Davis, born 09 Jan. 1812, baptised 02 Feb. 1812. 4.Mark, baseborn of Hannah Davis, baptised 29 Oct. 1815 (birth date not shown) My belief that this Hannah is the same Hannah of Rachael Davis is strengthened by the fact that all four of her childrens first names-William, Mary Ann, Thomas, and Mark all appear in later Davis generations also. I wonder if anyone has access to the Wiltshire Records Office (I believe that's where the Biddestone Parish records are kept) and would be willing to take a look at the Poor Law Records, Bastardy Bonds, and Apprenticeship Records for me. Would be interested in if any father's names are listed for any of these children, if Rachael's parents names are shown anywhere, the location of Rachael's birth, and if any of the named children were apprenticed into any trade. I've recently read that many young girls from poor families were apprenticed into housewifery till age 21 and that often they got pregnant early to get out of the situation and thus kept the cycle going of having illegitimate children prior to coming of full age. I do know that Rachael died 02 June 1830 at 75 years of age and was buried out of the Biddestone Parish. I have wondered if she has a marker at her grave in Biddestone--if anyone is in that area and could check that for me, I sure would be thankful. This is a lot to ask of someone I know--if you can help me, maybe I can help you with any research over on this side of the Atlantic. I really do appreciate your taking the time to read this! Regards from Colorado, USA Carol Davis Warner

Dear Debbie, I read your request on both the Dorset and Wessex sites and wish to mention that I have a FRAMPTON ancestor in the Fontmell Magna area of Dorset. He features in a Bastardy order dated September 11th, 1765. The wonderfully evocative description reads "... as upon the oath of the said Ann STILL on the 25th day of June now last past was delivered of a male Bastard child in the said parish of Fontmell Magna in the county and that the said male Bastard child is l;ikely to be chargeable to the said parish of Fontmell Magna and further that George FRAMPTON of Fontmell Magna aforesaid, Miller, did beget the said Bastard child on the body of her, the said Ann STILL and therefore George Frampton, being now before us and consenting to our making an order in the premises." The rest of the order reads as they usually do! If this George has any connection with your line, I would be delighted to hear from you. He is my 3x gt. grandfather. I have the remainder of the family line, but of George himself, I know little except what you read here. He would have been born about 1730. I have my fingers crossed for a positive response from you! Best wishes, Iain Parsons, in a very cold and windy Brampton, Cumbria.

A very big thank you to everyone who took the time to find Benjamin Baker. His daughter who married in 1875, had one of their children as born in Meare, Som. in 1878, then moved to Cardiff to live permanantely. So it looks like the Ben from Meare fits the bill. Can I be cheeky and ask for another look up!! Emanuel BARTLETT... Father, with his son William age 11 ish. Thanks in advance. Annette.
