Hello listers I wonder if anyone will be able to help us locate a church. An exact replica of it is built in Monte Vista (America) and one of its members (Carole Anne Farley) would like to find the 'original' here in England where her family used to worship before they emmigrated. The most likely places for it is Wiltshire or Oxfordshire, but not definitely. I have a photograph of the replica - now 111 years old - at my website, along with a couple of newspaper pictures: http://www.oodwooc.f9.co.uk/ph_unknown.htm Thanking you in advance. Can anyone advise where the following two wills will be held. James TIBBS, Caundle Bishop, 5 1782 (also has Ref.12 DS). Thomas TIBBS, Gussage All Saints, 31 1780. The ref. for them comes from the British Record Soc. list of Dorset wills, 1568 - 1799. Dorset R.O. informed me (admittedly in 1999) that they thought they were held by Wiltshire R.O. but the latter do not appear to have them listed. Happy to make the trip from rain soaked Surrey provided I know which direction to take. Vince Alexander.
Hi List Many thanks to those who responded to my query re location of Kingsbrompton. I think the short answer in today's terms there is really no such place, however, the consensus seems to be that Brompton Regis is the actual location, which in my poor vocabulary range is Brompton King? Just back to front!!! Thanks again for your help. David Cheek - Adelaide - Australia Virus Protection by Norton AntiVirus 2001
Hi Listers, I'm trying to track down a William BARKER who was supposedly born c1833 in NewTown, Oxford, England. He married in Australia in 1851. Cannot locate a NewTown in Oxfordshire although have been advised that there is a Newtown in Hamps and a New Town in Glouc not far from Oxfordshire. Is anyone able to help with New Town or locate possible family in 1841 census ? Thank you Doug (Tasmania)
Work commitments mean I have to unsubscribe for a few days. If anyone has data on the following I'd appreciate an off-List message. Many thanks and good hunting, people. Now all you need is SKS to drop into the Local Studies Library in Taunton to have a look to see if he's there: I'm not sure if anyone here can help, but I think there might be a lady who frequents the Bristol and Somerset List who might be able to, if she isn't too busy putting her website on-line:-) So it might also be worth asking on our sister list at: Bristol_and_Somerset-L-request@rootsweb.com But getting back to the Somerset Archives site I note that there is a list of prisoners at: http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/asp/listal.asp?Database=../_Private/prisoner.mdb&File=PrisonDescriptions&Field=Surname but regret no Thomas KNAPP! I don't know how complete or otherwise this list is? Another angle may be to try and find local newspapers for the period: these may be too early, but Paul Mansfield has indexed some papers for the area and these can be seen by downloading the files from: http://freespace.virgin.net/paul.mansfield1/paul001.html At least they will give you an idea of the content and maybe the particular newspaper that you need to research? But at the end of the day I would have thought that if any records survive, then they will be at Taunton RO. Regards Paul Portland
Hello Alison I have no idea where Daglinworth is, but I used to be a Smith and have been chasing them thro, Glouc,Somerset, Oxford, Canada etc with little progress BUT we never know,do we. My grandmother was a Ruth,my Aunt and my younger sister also were Ruth and it is my 3rd name so MAYBE there's a connection? Rosemary Barbour, BC, Canada
Hi, I am biting the bullet and going to attampt to do my SMITHS......All four lines!!!!! The first I would like to work on are a couple who were living in Daglingworth in the mid 1700s, they did not however marry there, they were Richard and Ruth Smith, I am descended through their daughter Sarah who married Thomas BRUNSDON. Does anyone out there have any clues as to where I should start looking for their marriage? Alison, Canberra
Can someone tell me exactly where Eaton Water, Wilts. was located. I have long suspected it being next to or very close to Eaton Hastings, Wilts. It was surely near Lechlade, Inglesham, or Eaton Hastings, Wilts. In the Dooms Day Survey it was called Water Eaton but later is referred to as Eaton Water. Any help or thoughts welcomed! Stumbled on this site during a search and thought it may be of use to some of you. It list over 470,000 names from trade directories from 40 counties in or around 1848. It is a good starting point for anyone who thinks their ancestors may have had a trade. http://www.direct-resources.uk.com/surname.htm David Foster has given me permission to post his site. He has done a lot of work. Good Luck and pass this on to other lists if you think they may benefit. sorry to those on the same lists as me. Hi listers We have found a rele that was an inmate at Portland Prison in 1851 and would like to find out more details. His name was Thomas KNAPP and he was born/bap in High Ham in Somerset. Does anyone have an idea as to where to look to find out when his case was tried and what details we are likely to find out? Is there any info on the net we can search through? Does anyone have any records that they would lookup for us? Thanks for helping Andrew and Sue
Hi List, Could somebody do a look up on the 1861 Census for Codford St Peter in Wiltshire for:- James Trowbridge-head Jane " -wife Mary Ann " -daughter (my G.Grandmother) James " -son There are so many Trowbridges in that area at that time that I am finding it confusing. If possible, if they are found, could I have the place of residence at the time if possible. Dear Listers, The probable cause of death was a stroke. This sudden death was known in some areas of the country as 'a stroke from the hand of God'. Iain, in a beleaguered Cumbria.
I am a new member to your list. The family I am researching is the HOARE family in High Ham / Huish Episcopi / and Langport. I have received a death certificate belonging to an Elizabeth Hoare who died in December 1858 at Huish Episcopi, the cause of death from the Coroners Inquest held on the 15th December 1858 gives the cause of death as ''Suddenly by a visitation of God' Elizabeth was 38 years old and the wife of Henry HOARE. Could anybody give an explanation as to how this cause of death was reached, or maybe they did not know. Maybe it could be a local expression at that time. Many thanks Maureen
Hello everyone Does anyone know anything about the GULLEY family? We are looking for Dorcus GULLEY born Swimbridge 1863 and her subsequent marriage to John KNAPP from High Ham in Somerset. Also Sophia GULLEY born in Barnstable aprox 1839, mother Grace ???? Hope this is the right list, or is there a Devon one we should be going to? Tanks for all help Andrew and Sue
Hello: Folks on this list have been so helpful, I was hoping SKS would be willing to look on the 1881 census CD's for George Edward HOARE, unmarried, age 23 or 24. He was listed as a bachelor when married my great grandmother (Elizabeth Smith BAKER, a widow) on 12 Oct 1892 in the Andover registry office. So far I have had no luck finding him or his parents (his father was George HOARE)in 1881. He was listed as living at Fullerton, Andover at the time of the marriage (she was living in Tangley). Evidently they went on to have other children together. Thanks for any asssitance you may be able to offer.
