    1. [WSX] Oxfordshire FHS research facilities
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Researchers living in the Oxfordshire area may wish to note that the society's facilities at the Holford Centre are next open for business this coming Sunday morning, 1 April 2001, from 9.15am to 12.15pm. For full details of the material held at the Holford Centre, directions as to how to get there etc please see :- www.ofhs.org.uk All are welcome, particularly researchers living in adjacent counties. You don't have to be an Oxfordshire FHS member either ! The material at the centre is primarily relating to Oxfordshire, but we have the IGI on microfiche, 1881 census and British Vital Records index CDs etc - so there is some non-Oxfordshire material available. Any problems or queries, please E-mail me off list. Paul Gaskell Publicity Officer Oxfordshire FHS E-mail : publicity@ofhs.org.uk

    1. [WSX] Have I found her???
    2. Maureen Jones
    3. Hello I'm posting this as what you might call a tentative interest - it's not quite confirmed that this is indeed my lady. I ordered the birth certificate for a girl who MAY have been my elusive Emily Sabina Barrett's sister. The details are as follows: Name: Elizabeth Barrett Father: John Barrett Profession of father: Labourer Name of mother: Sarah Barrett formerly MASLIN Signature of informant: X The mark of Sarah Barrett mother at Highworth. The birth took place Jan 21 1840 in Highworth. According to what I've found, Emily's parents were probably John Barrett and Sarah _____. John was a shopkeeper in 1874. I'm posting this in the hopes that maybe SOMEONE out there can confirm that this John and Sarah (Maslin) Barrett had a child named Emily Sabina Barrett between 1854 and 1859, possibly in Wootton Bassett. Her possible sister was Julia Susan Barrett, b. 1846. On the Wootton Bassett parish records I found a Julia Susan HEATH b. 1846, but not Julia Susan BARRETT. Is it possible that Julia S was adopted? I'm so confused :):) Taryn __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/?.refer=text

    3. Sorry I cant help as this is not a part of Wiltshire I am familiar with. My Wiltshire days were spent in Corsham in the 1950s when my only modes of transport were Shanks's pony or an old bike. Regards Harry ----- Original Message ----- From: GBPrather@aol.com To: harry.tadd@virgin.net Cc: Wessex-plus-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 9:43 PM Subject: Re: [WSX] Eaton Water, Wilts. Hi Harry, Thanks for the info. on Water Eaton House... !!! My grandfather that came to America was born in 1604 at Eaton Water, Wilts. (or Water Eaton, Wilts.) I have been to England many times in the past and visited old family sites, such as Inglesham, Latton, Stanton St.Bernard ... all in Wilts. but I was never able to find Eaton Water (or Water Eaton). Do you know how old Water Eaton House is ??? My Prater family was supposted to be at Eaton Water, Wilts. (Water Eaton) for many generations. My grandfather, John Prater, Esq. was also supposed to have been born there. Could it be, that they were living at Water Eaton House... ? Being born "gentry" of the time, John Prater, Esq. was said to have owned large acreages of land in and around Eaton Water, Wilts. I know that you may not be able to answer these questions but I wanted to pose them anyway in hopes of getting your thoughts. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP !!!! 1. [WSX] ROBINS/ROBBINS Death- Can someone help?
    2. Hello All, I wonder if some kind soul would do me the favor of trying to locate the death/burial of Martha ROBINS/ROBBINS in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire? Martha was born in 1799 and married Alexander ROBINS/ROBBINS in 1836. She was in the 1851 census living at "The Buthay" in Wootton Bassett with her daughter Elizabeth STOCKHAM. I am guessing that she died prior to the 1861 census, probably about 1856 but have not been able to check that census to verify. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Best Joan in Freeport,N.Y.

    3. Wendy Yes, the 1841 Census in Culham............William BARKER b.c1833, Father: Thomas. Mother: Lucy (Burke). William was in Australia by 1851. Does anyone have access to 1841 Census in Culham ? I suspect you may and the assistance is greatly appreciated. I only started on Family history 3 weeks ago and still learning the ropes. I suspect the "Paul" below is the kind person that advised me to lookup: "There are 3 places named New Town in Oxfordshire check the following Old Maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.htm" Thanks Doug McLean (Tasmania) ----- Original Message ----- From: Wendy Archer <wharcher@cvd.co.uk> To: <WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2001 8:28 AM Subject: Re: [WSX] Re: BARKER > Paul - > > > There is also a part of Henley-on-Thames known as Newtown. 3. Hi George I suspect that the term Births is correct: some military units were sending in reports of BMD as early as 1761 and some of these are included in the Index of Births, Deaths and Marriages Index for HMS Forces (ie this is separate from the GRO's Index) held at the Family Record Centre at 1 Myddelton Street, Islington, EC1R 1UW. Although I believe the majority of these records date from 1881. But if the records were compiled by the unit's Chaplain then no doubt he conformed to the usual Church of England habit of reporting Baps, Mars, and Burials, rather than BMD.
