    3. Hi Carole, Have you visited this website ? http://www.fromeresearch.org.uk As you will see there is also a link to subscribe to a family history mailing list specifically for Frome and the surrounding villages. Maybe someone there has the answer for you. Happy Easter! 2. Linda Derham
    3. Hi, Can I just stop any panic by explaining that Brian means (or he should :>) that he did NOT actually get the virus as an attachment from THE MAILING LIST ITSELF. This CANNOT happen. You cannot send any attachments to any mailing list at Rootsweb and therefore you cannot receive any. What's happened to Brian is that someone from this or any other mailing list he belongs to, has his email address in their address book. The virus - which in this case looks like a worm - then sends itself out to everyone on this poor person's pc. Check your systems and visit www.download.com for cleaners etc. These things happen - but don't panic! 1. [WSX] 1851 Hampshire Census Lookup
    2. Vicki Hails
    3. I was hoping that someone might be able to look up the 1851 Hampshire Census index for me ? I am trying to find Willet BURRY, his wife, Augusta and their daughter Sabrina. Willet would have been about 30 and his wife about 25 and their daughter, Sabrina was just a baby as she was reportedly born c1850 in Lymington. I'd also like to know if Willet's parents can be found ? They were John and Elizabeth BURRY (aged in their 60's) and were most likely living in Christchurch at the time. TIA. 1. [WSX] VIRUS ALERT - free anti-virus software
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Brian I forwarded a message regarding Oxfordshire FHS activities to the list this morning. I received an off-list reply from someone whom I won't name with an attachment called :- news_doc.scr I was suspicious, as it seemed to be a .scr file dressed up to appear to be a Word document. My free anti-virus software, Inoculate IT, which can be downloaded from the web, identified this as a virus which I safely deleted. Inoculate IT is produced by Computer associates, the fifth biggest computer software producer in the world. It can be downloaded free of charge from :- www.antivirus.cai.com It hasn't let me down so far ! 2. Mail
    3. David, I note your comments. Is not the rich tapestry of life interesting? I was trying to be helpful, and to advise novice IGI users on various matters. In my experience, I have found that where the baptismal record for an illegitimate child, - usually where the name of the father has been omitted from the register -, {the relative column being left blank}, that the name of the putative father may been added as side note, along the spine of the register. Such information does NOT usually appear in the IGI! Many thanks for bothering to send a message. regards Adrian p.s Bastardy returns are readily available from CRO's, but the name shown on the form, as declared by the "wronged" mother, may not be the biological father of the illegitimate child.

    1. [WSX] Oxfordshire FHS forthcoming activities
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Colleagues As the Spring approaches, I though it might assist members and non-members alike if I reminded you about Oxfordshire FHS activities. However, this is an outline as to what we do. For more complete details, please consult the Oxfordshire Family Historian or our website :- www.ofhs.org.uk Non-members can find full details as to how to join on the website, as well as being able to print out a membership form. Future activities include :- 1. monthly meetings are held in Kidlington, usually on the fourth Monday of the month, but this changes if the meeting night falls on a Bank Holiday. There are no meetings in August and December. A speaker always makes a presentation on a topic, and takes questions. The society bookstall and library are available for browsing. NEXT MEETING MONDAY 23 APRIL, when Jeanne Bunting will present "Don't delay, write today - family history by post". 2. the Computer Group meets in Oxford on the first Monday of alternate months. Demonstrations, lectures, and a chance to ask those nagging computer questions. Beginners welcomed. Plenty of help available. NEXT MEETING MONDAY 4 JUNE, when the Computer Group Panel will demonstarte utiliies and other useful little programmes. 3. as a society, we attend a number of family history fairs and Open Days. A chance for those not living in the county to meet us for a chat, and buy their books and microfiche without paying postage charges ! Forthcoming events that we will attend include CIRENCESTER on Saturday 28 April, SOG WESTMINSTER on Saturday 5 May (but NOT on Sunday), ABINGDON on Saturday 19 May and AYLESBURY on Saturday 28 July. 4. our own society Open Day will be at DIDCOT on Saturday 6 October. The usual assortment of visiting society stalls, research facilities, beginners' help desk, computer software and internet demonstrations and much more. The guest lecturer will be Simon Fowler, formerly of the PRO and the SOG, and now editor of Family History Monthly. All welcome. Highly recommended. 5. our society research centre at the Holford Centre, School Lane, Stanton St John continues to open about four times per month - usually a couple of Tuesday afternoons, a Saturday and a Sunday morning. Check the website for precise details. Plenty of records to look at, including the society's extensive library. Admission free to members, nominal charge to non-members. NEXT OPEN TUESDAY 17 APRIL, SATURDAY 21 APRIL, TUESDAY 1 MAY and SUNDAY 13 MAY. And if you've any spare time after that lot .....joking ! Researchers from adjacent counties are particularly welcome at any of our events that they feel may be of interest. Paul Gaskell Publicity Officer Oxfordshire FHS E-mail : publicity@ofhs.org.uk

    3. Ummm this is a genealogy discussion list ie except for the those writing the messages there should be no need to mention living people here, except maybe for the odd author to two, or whatever! Please send list of this nature direct to the person making the inquiry if you think it may help or point folk in the direction of the appropriate on-line directories. Please don't forget that whatever you post here is archived and is available to others who have net access. My gg grandmother's name was Mary Gibble (married WALL in 1840 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire) and wish to find any of her siblings or her parents names. The only information I have on GIBBLE is that Mary was born circa 1814 in Bushley, which made her 37 in 1851. I don't know if she was the eldest or youngest child. 2. David Armstrong
    3. Point 3 is incorrect. Illegitimate births DO have the father's name on the IGI and are easy to identify as the surnames are given as "Smith OR Jones" etc. With any index, it is essential to understand a) the purpose of the Index, b) how it is compiled, c) what are its limitations etc. The new National Burial Index is an example. According to recent magazine articles, there are not enough experienced transcribers to check the work of the enthusiastic volunteers, with the resulting potential for errors.
