Offer of passenger lists and newspaper articles: This year is the 150th Anniversary of the emigrant voyage of the "Marion" with some of the 258 Wiltshire people who emigrated to South Australia and Victoria that year. The "Marion" was wrecked when entering South Australian waters. A Canadian subscriber has advised that someone is planning a celebration of that event. I would be pleased to hear about it. I have a spreadsheet showing the "Marion" passenger lists from a number of sources (with many name spelling variations for same people) and some 9 articles copied from Adelaide newspapers of the time referring to the shipwreck and aftermath. I would be pleased to make this material available to listers. Most convenient to send would be 2 winzip files, 33kB and 39kB which could be attached to Email, although I could send as separate .rtf, .csv and .xls files. Attachments will be virus free, but listers are urged to take normal precautions re attachments. Regards to all. John Keynes Adelaide, South Australia

And a good addition to this good advice is that the REAL worms and viruses don't come with a "warning" that's been forwarded around the world and back six hundred times! They just appear - and one of your contacts will advise you of it and warn you about it because they've been unlucky enough to get it themselves! Hello Listers, I have received two emails today with attachments that I was not expecting. Given the current viral climate, I deleted the entire thing without reading it. If anyone wishes to send me an attachment, could you please give advance warning, for the immediate future. Here's hoping *it* dies from overexposure before too long! Patrisia

Further to my last messages (sorry to bang on about this) on the recent virus problems I've just been to: http://antivirus.cai.com/ and http://support.ca.com/ and note that they have really free software (ie not trial) which the say will get rid of the virus "and" the trojan, but, as it says on the site, make sure you download and update the program with the updates before you run the software. You can also subscribe to their newsletter at: http://antivirus.cai.com/antivirus_enews.htm if you want to be kept up to date on this sort of thing. There is an overview of the product at: http://antivirus.cai.com/overview.htm Regards Paul Portland For 19th Century Newspaper Extracts see: http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/pbtyc/News_Extracts/News_Extracts_Index.html

Hi Again Helen, the list owner of the Dorset List has just posted the following message and has agreed that I may post it here for your benefit - so apologies though to those who may see it twice. "I - and other listers - have received the following: "try to stop you at.eml", with an attachment "unregmp1.exe" from james.pettinger@ntlworld.com It has the appearance of a virus, masquerading as a game. The main part of the message referred to a game called "Squark .... pure arcade action", and to "WORDMIX (sic) ... an educational word game". This is a new virus and an extremely nasty one. Make sure your virus checker is up to date and I cannot repeat too many times - DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CERTAIN OF THEIR CONTENTS. Go back to the sender and double check before you open." >From further research Helen tells me that the payload is a virus called W32/Magistr-A which you can read about at: http://www.sophos.co.uk/virusinfo/analyses/w32mag.html This can also come with other phrases such as: sentences you sentences him to sentence you to ordered to prison convict judge circuit judge trial judge found guilty find him guilty affirmed judgment of conviction verdict guilty plea trial court trial chamber sufficiency of proof sufficiency of the evidence proceedings against the accused habeas corpus jugement Enough said I hope! And all on an Easter Week-end too - or it nearly was :-( Regards Paul Portland
Seeing the name HAM reminded me of this; I do research in the USA. On Ancestry.com for a small fee you can search selected census records online, I have been looking at Illinois for the years 1880 and 1900 [there is no 1890 all bar a few thousand names were destroyed in a fire. that was for the whole country] I have been seeing lots of entries where country of origin is stated as England. The entry I made a note of was for HENRY HAM, born England, age 26, working at farm, that was in 1880 at Pleasant Ridge, Livingston County, Illinois.
Hi I found the virus on my computer. I am sorry if I infected anyone. The virus I found was called I-Worm.Badtrans. I had the Innoculate IT virus scanner which didnt pick it up so I went to the Mcafee site and did an online scan and that one didnt pick it up either. I downloaded F-Secure anti-virus software, which did the trick. I certainly will be a lot more cautious in the future and not soquick to open attachments. Paula
