Failing that I would also suggest that you download the excellent and free program Parish Locator from: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~gdl/parfind.htm This will enable you to devise (ooops sorry :-) !) a strategy for searching the parish registers with in a certain radius of Devizes eg 5 miles etc. Don't forget that people would often answer with the nearest town or well known place in the census rather than go into detail about some difficult to spell village or hamlet ie I would tell you I live on Portland rather than explain that I actually live in a place called Fortuneswell or Fortunes Well :-) It could also be that his mother may not have come from Devizes and may have had him baptised him in her own parish, especially if she had gone home to Mum to have the baby. Something which William may not have been aware of unless his Mum had told him? Regards Paul Isle of Portland

    3. Forwarded for information: may even be able to see - from a distance - the condition of those old PRs that we hear so much about - plus all the other material they hold, but about which we are not so sure: Paul Saturday April 28 2001 - 10.30am to 3.30pm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In April the Dorset Record Office will be marking the 10th anniversary of the opening of the splendid purpose built office on Bridport Rd in Dorchester with an Open Day. This will be a rare opportunity for visitors to tour the building seeing areas which are not usually open to the public. Special displays and activities are planned to demonstrate the work that is involved in caring for these unique records and helping people to use them. There will be the opportunity to talk to the archivists, conservators and public enquiry staff about their work and to see at first hand various aspects of this fascinating work. 3. I have just made a terrible mistake and forwarded a message to the Wessex list about the DCRO open day which should have gone to Paul Beynon. I ask you to please delete the messge and the email address which should have been kept confidential. If I hear (and I will!!!!) that anyone has contacted the originater of the message personally I will be very disappointed and it will mean that our relations with the record office staff will be permenantly damaged. Please respect the privacy of the person concerned and do not, under any circumstances, contact her about your research. Any queries - please contact me direct. 3. Hi Paul Don't know if you want to publicise this on Wessex. If you do please could you remove Jessamy and Anthony Wilsdon's name, email address etc. Jessamy lurks on the list but she doesn't want the fact that she is an archivist working at the Record Office made public knowledge as she is understandly concerned that she will start receiving private requests for look ups, free research etc. I've cut out the relevant section to send to Dorset with my own introduction. 3. Ah well! Didn't think the peace and quiet would last too long :-)) I've just been advised that there is yet another worm in the wild: this one is called Win32/Matcher.Worm which was apparently put in the wild today! See below message for what to look for! For those, like me, who want to see what its capable of see: http://support.ca.com/techbases/ilnt/virusalert2.html Je is getting a little sick of these idiots, but since someone has now produced a DIY worm generator - see: http://www.zdnet.com/zdhelp/stories/main/0,5594,2695860,00.html no doubt we shall see a plethora of this type of thing until either the novelty wears off or [K]Alamar brings out his next version. In Summary - just delete anything that has Matcher anywhere in it! I should, therefore, be grateful if we didn't continue with this thread as I have a feeling it might go a little OTT, as no doubt different people will have "very" different points of view and although I'd like to have my 2d worth (or 2c) I can't see an obvious Wessex connection :-)) But since John raises the point, although there are still a number of restrictions on where you can walk etc, many are being lifted as I write and Spring is certainly the best time to visit the ol' country with everything so green and fresh.
