Hello Listers, The Country House Database at http://www.r-alston.co.uk/country_house_database.htm I was searching for something ridiculously obscure, and found it at this site. For those that might have an interest in such things, and haven't found it for yourselves, check it out. Then put the kettle on while it's loading - some of files are huge. I hope you found it as useful as I did. All the best, Davy Weymouth, Dorset
I've received a message on another computer, at my Freeserve address, telling me that I've sent someone an attachment with a virus. Please do not open any attachments from me, as I haven't sent any at all. I would seriously appreciate advice about this. I scanned for viruses on Saturday and again today - apparently clear. When I read my mail today, several of the messages had my name as the sender. I deleted them all and emptied the delete box. Then I noticed that there were the same messages in my outbox with attachment signs, so I emptied that box (and delete box again) Then I had the message about me sending the attachment. I haven't a clue how this arose, but there was a message from Ken, who I know has had this problem too. What else can I do? At the moment, there is nothing on the other computer to indicate that all is not normal. But I apologise most sincerely if anyone else received an attachment from me. I really did not send anything. Joy
Hello list, Thankyou all for the response to my Vital Records question, you really are helpful, and I am very grateful. A special thankyou to Paul, I've learned so much from his help to me and to all the others, keep it up Paul. Hi Anne Further to my last it has been kindly drawn to my attention that I should have added that the LDS say at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Home/News/frameset_news.asp that all the VRI CDs will eventually be put on-line. Regret I don't know how long "eventually" is though ;-) For the odd look-up there are several list members who probably wouldn't mind delving into their sets of CDs, but they are very patchy for some counties eg Somerset, Devon and Gloucester, whereas for Dorset they are superb value! But by contrast the IGI for Dorset is very patchy! Hi Anne You have to buy the CDs for the other countries: There are sets of CDs for North America, British Isles, Australia, and the most recent introduction was a set for Europe. See: http://www.lds.org.uk/genealogy/software.htm for details of LDS CDs available, price and where and how to order in the UK. Hello All, I have been trying to get some info from the LDS site, the Family Search etc, and wanted to have a look at the Vital Records. It keeps insisting I put in a Country, but the drop down box only has-None or Mexico,no good to me in the UK. What am I doing wrong, or is there some reason why only Mexicans can gain access. I would be grateful for advice. Thanks, Anne Shilton _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
I have just discovered from the 1851 census of Islington, London that my 2G-Grandfather, James BUSH was born "Somerset, Bath" about 1818 (he shows as being 33 in the census). He married Henrietta RUSSELL 30 Sept, 1844 in Camberwell, Surrey and in 1851 was living at 4 Alpha Place, Islington, Middx. where he was a greengrocer. His father was Thomas BUSH and he was a Mason. His baptism does not appear on the IGI. Does anyone have any possibility of a connection? Can anyone suggest a good place to start the search in Bath? I think Dr. Campbell's index does not cover Bath. Many thanks Hugh Wallis Ontario, Canada Formerly of Surrey, UK hughwallis@home.com <mailto:hughwallis@home.com>
Hi Carol I've heard that other people have had the same problem and I think one person suggested removing all the address info completely ie not entering anything for the address was a successful option :-) If you still have problems I would suggest you write to the following address: HistoryCenter@ellisisland.org Paul Portland On Mon, 23 Apr 2001 12:01:19 +0100, you wrote: >Dear Paul BENYON, Listowner, >I have tried to register with the above, but they do not allow me to >register because of my address. >I have only a "House- Name" and road, Town, County. >Five times, I have tried. >Do they only accept people who have house numbers? >Hope you or someone else can explain this to me, this has happened before >when I have tried USA sites. >Regards, >Carol Lloyd nee SHIRLEY > > >==== WESSEX-PLUS Mailing List ==== >PRO Leaflets on dozens of genealogy subjects eg my rellie was a >soldier, sailor, railwayman and lots more - see: >http://www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/riindex.htm > >
Dear Paul BENYON, Listowner, I have tried to register with the above, but they do not allow me to register because of my address. I have only a "House- Name" and road, Town, County. Five times, I have tried. Do they only accept people who have house numbers? Hope you or someone else can explain this to me, this has happened before when I have tried USA sites. Regards, Carol Lloyd nee SHIRLEY

In view of the recent press coverage I doubt if many list members don't know about it, but just in case not I thought I should mention that the Ellis Island Records are now online at: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org The database contains the records of 22 million immigrants to America who came through Ellis Island and covers the period 1892, when Ellis Island first opened, to 1924. I managed to access the site early this morning whilst America slept and was quite impressed - obviously access is a little slow at the moment and is subject to overloading at peak times, but give it a week or two and access should start to speed up as the initial enthusiasm wanes and the number of journalists wanting to write about the site drops back to a level that the servers can cope with:-) No, I didn't find my John and Sarah THOMPSON ((nee EWENS) b Bridport, Dorset 1868 married Cardiff 1891), but I shall call back at the site at a later date to see if they are recorded under alternative spellings - thought I should to squeeze a little Wessex content in somewhere:-) Oh yes! To view certain parts of the site you have to register which is free unless you require Membership in the Foundation: see http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/help/whe_register_1.asp?MID=481978082&nsrelax=yes#register for details. I am trying to make some definite links between the Chilmark Macey's and the Macey's who resided in Salisbury. Whilst some Chilmark Macey's appeared to have got married In St. Martins Church in Salisbury there APPEARS to be no link (yet) to those Salisbury Macey's who were also married at St. Martins ! Has anyone yet been able to make the link ? Also interested in trying to establish a reliable link to MACEY,s in Chilmark and Salisbury to members of the DEW family. John Macey nr. Colchester, Essex. Can anyone tell me if Wantage Berkshire Parish records became part of Oxfordshire records. I have been to the LDS Family History Centre and the films for Wantage only go to 1837 for baptisms. there are marriages after that but it is the baptisms that I need. I am looking for Alfred CROOK. He was born in Wantage in 1838. Any help please, Kay
My thanks to the many kind souls who replied to my test message. Very comforting. Kind regards Joy
