    1. [WSX] www.1837online.com - update 28 November
    2. Hello all Despite all of the reassurances forthcoming yesterday seemingly from people at the SoG and FFHS amongst others , we still have serious doubts about this site. As we stated a couple of days ago, we have been in touch directly with the Family Record Centre (which is a place and not an organisation) jointly operated by the Public Record Office and the Office for National Statistics (the latter amongst other things maintain the GRO index). Having spoken again to the Management at the Family Record Centre this morning, the official stance is that they know nothing about the site, the digitisation or publication of the GRO index. They are "investigating" and are "concerned" - which is a direct quote from the FRC on the 28 November. The FRC have not authorised the digitisation of the index and indeed are not aware of the technology to do so - there is apparently a cd version of the index available for purchase (but not advertised) and it is probably the case that something has been created from that. The issues over the validity or security of the web site are not concerns for the FRC but whilst many are saying that Title Research are a reputable company (which we are sure they are), the domain name www.1837online.com is registered to a separate company Trace 2 Ltd which operates from the same building as Title Research and has a contact email of a Director of Title Research. Regarding the "100 year rule" over publication of the index, this is not laid down in law in the same way as the census data is but is a rule enforced by ONS. Originally, ONS did not permit publication of the GRO index by persons or organisations who may have bought the fiche - it was subject to copyright and sold on the usual basis of being for "research and private study" - which permits commercial genealogy firms to use (but not reproduce) the index. Earlier this year, ONS relaxed their rules and permitted the publication of the index but only in respect of entries over 100 years old. The original rules still apply to later data. Our money stays firmly in our pocket. Tony & Linda

    1. [WSX] Next week's Oxfordshire FHS Computer Group meeting
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi listers The next meeting of the Computer Group of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be held next Monday 2 December 2002 at Oxford University Computing Services, 13 Banbury Road, Oxford. This is located just to the north of St Giles. Doors open at 7.15 pm for coffee, with the presentation starting at around 7.30pm. The evening will be hosted by our society webmaster and Computer Group panel member Malcolm Austen, who will be talking about "Organising your web browsing". I assume that this will be a demonstration of the effective use of Microsoft Internet Explorer, with possibly a look at one or two lesser-known browsers as well. Thoughtful use of your web browser can make all the difference in your effective use of the internet, so this should be a valuable tutorial. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions to get there, please see the map linked to the society's website at :- www.ofhs.org.uk For a list of future meetings of the OFHS see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html Any queries, please contact me off-list. Season's greetings. Paul Gaskell Publicity Officer and Minutes Secretary Oxfordshire Family History Society E-mail : [email protected] Website : www.ofhs.org.uk

    3. Hi List, Could anyone tell me if Chapel Court, Bath, mentioned in the 1851 census, still existed in the 1861 and 1871 censuses? Also does anyone know the population of Bath around 1961 as I may do a blanket search for Caroline EDDY and wonder how long it would take. I am unable to go to Bath or London to look at the census, but can order the film at the mormon church. regards Valerie

    3. Hi Andy, To answer your question about where this leaves the FreeBMD project - it leaves us exactly where we were before this scheme was announced! The FreeBMD project offers to do the searching for you, and it is FREE. Ok it is not complete yet, but if everyone helped out, it soon would be! So what would you rather do, pay your money and laboriously search those horrible indexes, or let FreeBMD search for you for free :-) Come on everyone, transcribe a page each and get this project completed, then we can all set to work on FreeCens and get those online too :-) Sheelagh ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andy Mawer" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 8:25 PM Subject: [WSX] 1837 online > Hi All, > Many thanks to Debs Fenemore for bringing this site to our attention. 1. [WSX] 1837online.com update
    2. Hi Folks just to update you all..... We telephoned the Family Records Centre today in our capacity as List Owners of our 2 Hampshire Lists as we felt that an official and definitive reply was essential to clarify the situation and to protect all of us from a potential problem. We received a call back from a Senior Manager who had no knowledge of the site - and so this is certainly not an official arrangement. He was going to speak to GRO Southport and will get back to us. Having already seen a message on another list that GRO at Southport know nothing about 1837online either and were referring to their Management,it would seem to confirm the illegitimate nature of the site. FRC Management have a concern that IF the data is available as stated,it may have been copied without licence. So far,FRC/PRO have granted a licence to FreeBMD to put the GRO index online on the proviso that there was no charge for access and in addition a number of Family History Societies have uploaded much smaller, local segments of the index. Some listers have mentioned a 100 year rule - just to be clear, this does not apply to the GRO index which is already in the public domain to the current date. FreeBMD as we understand it made a voluntary committment to limit the online data to 1900 so as to avoid problems with living people and also in view of the size of the job in hand. Once we get a further briefing from our contact at the FRC, we will mail again but in the meantime, our cash is staying where it is! Take care Linda & Tony

    1. [WSX] PENFORD
    2. John Lewis
    3. I am trying to find the origins of the PENFORD family who were farmers/butchers in Kingsclere, Hants in the early to late 1800s. John and Sarah Penford who were having children at Harridens Farm, Kingsclere between 1816 and 1831. John and his forebears do not seem to have been born in Kingsclere, nor did the marriage take place there. Sarah is recorded in Kingsclere in 1851 Census age 61 born Swallowpit (Swallowfield?), Berks. John presumably died before 1851 but is not buried in Kingsclere. And where did Thomas Penford marry Mary Ann X?. They appear in the baptism register for St. Paul, Ashford Hill only in 1846 for the baptism of son William (bapt. 4 Oct 1846). Thomas is recorded as a Farmer but not where. I suspect he is the eldest son of John and Sarah, bapt. at St. Mary Kingsclere on 8 Sep 1816 and probably went home to have his first child baptised in the local church. Any information on this family will be welcomed. --- John Lewis <jayellatntlworlddotcom> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK. using Debian GNU/Linux and GeneWeb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER, GIRDLER, HAWKINS, SMITH Hazeley Heath: BARKER, CHANDLER, LEWINGTON, NEVILL(E) Main Family Names in GLA are: GRIFFITH, HOPKINS, JENKINS, LEWIS. As I understand it, in addition to ceasing to produce paper records of these events or of censuses, the intention is that birth, marriage and death certificates will be available only to the individuals named on them, or with their written permission, until they (the certificates) are 100 years old. This leaves me wondering: 1. How will anyone new to the hobby be able to make a start? Most of us start after our parents have died but before their 100th birthday. 2. How do you obtain the signature of the subject of a death certificate, and how can he/she be then concerned about privacy?
