    1. [WSX] ISAAC TOBY (2)
    2. This one is a real mystery! I know that he was appointed a Captain in the Royal Marines in 1838-I have the papers signed by the young Victoria. He could be related to RICHARD JAMES WALTER TOBY who was a CDR.(Retd.) in the 1840s.In which case Hampshire would be the best bet for Isaac's birthplace. But other Tobys in my late husband's tree are in Devon and Cornwall. On my sittingroom wall I have a portrait of a young man in military uniform-referred to by my late father-in-law as "The Ancestor".I'd love to identify him!! Perhaps someone can help? TIA Pat Oliver

    3. A smile can make a moment bright, or help a dream come true. A smile is like a priceless gift that can be passed along; it makes a burden lighter too and often rights a wrong. A smile can say I understand,ā€ or simply, ā€œ I’m your friend.ā€ A sincere smile can sometimes bring A quarrel to an end. A smile cannot be bought or sold, or lost, or thrown away. So why not keep some smiles on hand, To share, day after day. Free searches of 125,000 Black Sheep and Police 1860-1920 at: http://www.lightage.demon.co.uk

    3. Hello, I am new to the list and was wondering if anyone has a connection to a Cyrus and Mary Hutchins(Hutchings) who had a son William born 1841. They appear in the 1851 census in Sutton Courtney sub district of Abingdon. Also wondering if anyone has access to the 1861 census if they could look them up. Cyrus(Siras) would be 47, Mary,37 and William, 19 in 1861. Thanks, Roberta in Canada.

    2. Tania Fowkes
    3. Hi Listers, If SKS has access the above census. I would really really appreciate a look up of any Marchant/Marchent/Merchant that may be on it. I have been trying to track an ancestor for about two years now with know success. I have tried the 1851 but to no avail. They originated in Nth Petherton but seems they moved on before 1851. He then travelled out here to Oz before 1858. I do not know if that was as a convict or immigrant. I would think his wife was probably deceased at this time. (Charles 44yrs Mary 58yrs) Any help someone can give me would be gladly received as he is starting to frustrate me to know end TIA Regards Tania Fowkes Researching Marchant/Marchent Somerset & Oz.

    3. In the family papers there is a letter to "Mr Crowe, Midle Scotland Yard, Whitehall, London" from a Mr L Threlkeld, Timsbury. The letter is dated 1763 or 1765 and indicated that Mr Crowe had land in Timsbury. I am trying to find out anything that would help me to break this brick wall. I don't know which Timsbury this is but if anyone has any information that might help, I would be delighted to hear from them. 1. [WSX] DUDLEY
    2. Gerry Cullen
    3. HELLO, Does anybody have any information on a Joan Dudley married to John Bayntun of Faulston (sometimes spelt Baynton on de Beinton) circa 1400's. She is meant to be the daughter of Sir Richard Dudley and heir to her brother. I have no townland for Joan But have seen her name spelt Joane and Joanne also in an old pedigree which gives little information but from that above. Is Dudley another name for de Audley which in turn is another name for Daundely? Also seeking information on Faulston House, near the parish of Bishopstone. The home of the Bayntuns (Baynton's) from 1300. I understand there is only one off its towers standing today but am seeking articles in books with regard to its history. Does anybody know of any publications. It's a bit difficult when searching on the net as you get different bits of info from the different spellings. However Dudley gives the lesser of the three (so perhaps it is not the same name at all). Phonetically it does not fit in but I was wondering if someone more knowledgable on the subject might enlighten me. Thanks GERRY

    3. Hi Tessa, the IGI, like any other transcription is prone to errors, I would always place more weight on evidence from a family member. Don't neglect the fact that you may have information on more than one person, the pool of names was much smaller at that time than it is now. 1. [WSX] Any ideas?
    2. Tessa Kirk
    3. Can anyone help with this info received from a friend in Canada? Regards Tessa "John Spencer ---The IGI has him born Jan 11 1808 and the record that I have of him from his oldest son says Jan 11 1806.However I have 2 counties of birth for him ---1 from the son again that says he was born in Lancashire and the other county is in a record of another son's death and it says Hampshire. No village name on either. They also have 2 counties for John's wife, Harriet Adams---first is Yorkshire and the other Lincs. Thus my dilemma. Not great, is it. The first record also says John was in the British army for 25 yrs, 4 months and 3 days. Before that he had been apprenticed to a farmer. They were in Canada by 1848 by the time their oldest son, John was born and that is from the=e the IGI also but I knew that the son was born in Toronto at about that time"

    1. [WSX] LEWIS of Yeovil, Somerset 18th Century
    2. Sara White
    3. Elizabeth Lewis married Benjamin Hitchcock (or Hiscox or Hiscock) in 1802 in Yeovil, Somerset. Lewis is not a terribly common name in Somerset, but I have noticed a scattering of references to this surname. Unfortunately I have not found Elizabeth's baptism. She had children from 1802 to 1815 so I think that her birth would fall within the period of 1770 to 1785. Has anyone seen anything suitable? Sara White
