Hi All, A rather embarrassing situation, I seem to have been looking for the wrong person for some time now. I seem to have jumped to the wrong conclusion. I am looking for a HENRY LEWINGTON in Ramsbury/Axford he should be approx 30 in 1871, he should be given as a blacksmith. If still living with Father his name should be john who is also a blacksmith. Could anybody please help? Best wishes and happy new year to all Andy Penton Mewsey, Hants. Hello everyone, Does anyone have any information on the following BROOKES family living at Easton Royal near Pewsey, Wiltshire in 1901, please? Alfred W. BROOKES, 50, was a carpenter working on his own account. He was born in Easton Royal. Frances BROOKES (nee PAYNE), his wife, was 38 and born in Temple Cloud, Somerset. She was the sister of my great-grandfather Sydney PAYNE. Children in the household were daughters, Elsie F. BROOKES, 14, Eva M. BROOKES, 10, and son, 9-year-old Francis S. BROOKES. They were all born in Easton Royal. It's likely that the elder children were from Alfred's first marriage as his wife, Frances, was unmarried at the time of the 1881 and 1891 census, when she was a dressmaker living in Lambeth, Surrey with her aunt Sarah Dore DICKASON (nee VEATER). Hello everyone, Does anyone have any information on the DERHAM family, who were living at Easton Royal near Pewsey, Wiltshire at the time of the 1901 census, please? John DERHAM, 44, was a school master at a Church of England school. He was born in Pimlico, London. His 40-year-old wife, Sarah DERHAM (nee PAYNE), was born in Temple Cloud, Somerset. She was the sister of my great-grandfather, Sydney PAYNE. Their daughter, Elsie, 8, was born in Bristol. This is all the information I have on this family, so any further snippets would be gratefully received. Dear List, Should someone be missing this guy, I am able to give some details. Cheers Bev. Edmonds Australia OPC Dartington & Stokenham, Devon, Eng.
Anne, I would love to BARE with you, but wont your man get a bit upset? :-) It's OK. We know what you mean. It's the English language what's to blame. The other day I wrote, "I've just created the old man." when I meant cremated. Ernie Bull W London --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hello everyone, My 3x great-grandmother Tabitha LILES was born c. 1823 in Marshfield, Gloucestershire. I do not know who her parents were as I do not have details of her baptism. They may have been Samuel LILES and Sarah SANSBURY who married at West Littleton on 28th. October 1811 or they may have been Moses LILES and Susannah DOVEY who were married at Marshfield on 28th. June 1819. Tabitha had a brother Thomas LILES who was born at Marshfield either c.1815 or c.1816. Two different transcripts of the 1851 Wiltshire census give his age in 1851, when he was living at Monkton Farleigh, as 30 or 36. If he was 30, then either of the couples above could have been his parents. If he was 36, then Samuel and Sarah may be the likely ones. Tabitha and Thomas may have had a sister, Prudence LILES. A 7-year-old child with this name was buried at Marshfield on 1st. July 1832. Tabitha named one of her daughters Prudence. Tabitha LILES married William HANCOCK in the 1840s, but I haven't been able to find their marriage. At the beginning of their married life they lived at Oakridge Lynch, Bisley, Gloucestershire, but after that they lived at Oldland, Bitton, Gloucestershire. I have LILES information from transcripts of the 1851 and 1881 Gloucestershire and Wiltshire censuses and the Monkton Farleigh baptisms of Thomas's children from the Vital Records Index. Does anyone have any further information on the LILES family of Marshfield, Gloucestershire, please? Greetings one and all, would there be one of you fine folk out there who has the 1841, 1851, or 1861 cencus for Wincanton, Somerset. I'm laid up at present so have decided to utilize the time finishing off a data base for the Clewett, Clewitt, Cluit, Cluett family in the UK. It's great having the 1881 and 1901 cencus all on line now isn't it!! Also see some kindly soul has a good bit of the Wincanton parish transcriptions done also which have been a great help. I know just how time consuming it can by my own meagre efforts. If there is anyone researching in NZ you might find some of my old church postcards interesting - there are a few English and Tasmanian ones as well. Cheers Adrienne [email protected] http://AdeInNelson.homestead.com/
If anyone could tell me more about this area to the East of Wincanton I'd be interested to know about it. I see from the great maps on the genuki site for Somerset that it is a reasonable sized area and there is a farm by the same name. Cheers Adrienne [email protected]

And you shouldn't forget to consult what should really be your first port of call for Somerset - agreed its probably not up to date - but its probably your best starting point: http://www.genuki.org.uk/indexes/SOMcontents.html then there is: Paul Mansfield's contribution at: http://freespace.virgin.net/paul.mansfield1/paul003.html and Roy Parkhouse at: http://www.parkhouse.org.uk/ probably both included in the GENUKI page above. My thoughtful daughter came across a copy of The Shilling Law Book, dated 1899, and thought I might find it an interesting Christmas Present ;-) As the first chapter covers the law (put simply) regarding Marriage and Divorce and Husband and Wife in England and presumably Wales (but not Scotland) - I thought that some list members might also find it of interest too - it includes references to: How to get married, Minors, Breach of Promise, Personal rights of husband and wife, Interest in respective property, Devolution of property on death of either husband or wife, General effect of marriage, Obligations, Contracts of married women, Separate estate, Implied agency of married women, Separation and divorce, Marriage and divorce abroad. References are also made to the Married Woman's Property Act, 1882 As the Preface states "a work of this size can only present a bird's eye view of a small portion of it" so if you require more detail then you will need something more substantial, but it should answer some of our questions for this period. Oh! I nearly forgot - the URL is: http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Shilling_Law/Contents.html At the present time I've only included the first Chapter, but if anyone thinks that some of the other chapters eg Wills, might be of general interest, then please advise and I'll try to include it in due course Paul 50.33.50N 02.26.70W
