    3. Hi there fellow lister. Do you know that some of us who have been playing around wiith genealogy on our computers assume an awful lot!!! I was asked to speak at a genealogy society meeting in a small NZ town recently and decided that the use of computers in researching and making contact with others with similar interests was the way I was going to go. It amazed me how few even knew how to use batch numbers on IGI to search out other family members from the same parish church. I took with me a photocopied selection of some of my favourite sites and found that most were unknown to them - consequently I'm going to share them with you as I know some of you will find them of value. GENUKI UK & IRELAND http://www.genuki.org.uk/mindex.html A great wealth of information here as well as links to as much again. Great lookups also offered in seperate counties. Also some online cencus and parish records. NB there is also a search engine for this site:- http://www.genuki.org.uk/search.html COMMONWEALTH GRAVES http://cwgc.org/ Fascinating historical stuff here. WORLD CONNECT http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi I was particularly fortunate in finding two branches of my family on this and was able to make contact with two more distant relies. UK ARCHIVES www.a2a.pro.gov.uk Here you need to use all possible spelling of a surname eg Crump in the 1600s was spelt Cromp Crompe Crump Crumpe. 1901 BRITISH CENCUS www.cencus.pro.gov.uk doesn't cost to find names but to get details it does. Rather than print off the sheets I saved them to disk to save time and printed them later when I wasn't paying for my time - pays to get organized before you start paying and find the folk first so you are getting best value for your dollar when downloading. GENEALOGY LINKS www.genealogylinks.net/ UK SURNAMES LIST www.county-surnames.co.uk/index.mv UK BIRTH MARRIAGES DEATHS http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl A vast number of records between 1837-1902 Still incomplete but another 4 million odd added on New Years Eve. A great way of finding wives surnames. FAMILY SEARCH - IGI, 1881 cencus and more. http://familysearch.org/ As stated above, this site can be used in a variety of ways. Remember when using batch numbers to change the last number as bigger parish records are split up into time periods. The C can sometimes be replaced with a P, and by using a M instead you find the marriages. BATCH NUMBER http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tyeroots/index4.html Here are a number of batch numbers for churches sorted by county. TRADE DIRECTORIES www.historicaldirectories.org/ VILLAGES/FAMILIES UK http://curiousfox.com/ A new site which could prove interesting - it's up to you to add your bit. NEW ZEALAND GENEALOGY SEARCH ENGINE http://downtown.co.nz/genealogy/ Must be good - it accesses my site as well as lots of shipping records etc. AUSSIE/NZ BMD www.rootsweb.com/~ausbdm/ That'll keep some of you out of mischief for a while. Happy hunting Adrienne

I would appreciate any information you could pass my way as I have a major task in tracing the generations before my GF(s). Many of my ancestors where Hunt Servants, GODDARD, CORNISH, TAYLOR, employed by different Hunts throughout Britain. My GF Benjamin GODDARD argued that the GODDARD family had the longest association with foxhunting than any other family. There nomadic lifestyle has made it difficult to trace them as they have lived in so many places, often only for a year or two. To give you an 'easy' example: my GGM Annie CORNISH born Exeter, Devon, married (& met) in Hexham, Northumberland, my GGF Harry GODDARD born Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire. Harry served with Hunts in Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Essex, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, Herefordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Surrey, Hampshire, Gloucestershire ........ & Ireland and died in Wiltshire after having the Black Horse Pub, Burton Hill, Malmesbury, Wilts. I do have a 1936/7 Baily's Hunting Directory (£10 second-hand!) which includes limited info on my GGF, GF & 2 G Uncles, the local Fam Hist Centre only has more recent copies and Baily's only goes back to 1873ish. 2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi listers Next Sunday 26 January 2003 is the day of the annual Bracknell Family History Fair. This will be held at the usual venue, which is Bracknell Sports and Leisure Centre, Bagshot Rd (A322), Bracknell, Berkshire RG12 9SE. The event opens at 10.00am and ends at 5.00pm. It is the country's largest Sunday fair, with over 200 stalls. Further details of the event, and a link to a map showing its location, can be found on :- http://members.aol.com/aquarterma/datesandlocations.htm I'm delighted to announce that this society will have representation at the event. Our stall will be manned by Hugh and Jean Kearsey, Neil Bradshaw and Wendy Archer. They will be selling the society's unrivalled range of indexes and transcriptions on microfiche and CD ; they will have a selection of the very best buys available from the society's bookstall ; and they will be equipped with the society's computerised "Search Services" database. Further details from :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ I think it's fair to say that the society's stall will have something to interest everyone with Oxfordshire and North Berkshire interests, so why not pop by for a chat and a browse. The team will be delighted to meet everyone, and in particular those "out of county" members who might otherwise find it difficult to keep in touch. Very best wishes. 3. Hi Amy Regret I can't come up with a book for that period - the organised smuggling gangs that had operated in the earlier in the century had been long broken up and I would've thought that apart from a little part time smuggling by a few of the local fishermen etc life would have been pretty quiet in that respect and that your ggf would have been more involved in coast watching and ensuring that no harm came to any of the many vessels that passed through that sometimes very dangerous stretch of water so close to the Needles at the East end of the Solent - where many a disaster has taken place in bad weather. The PRO provides a brief, but interesting and useful leaflet on the subject of the coast guard at: http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/ExternalRequest.asp?RequestReference=ri2044 I'm trying to think of the name of a lady who specialises in researching coast guard's careers, but her name escapes me at the present - perhaps someone else on the list can remember or has it jotted down somewhere. 3. Hi Everyone With apologies to those who have seen my earlier requests and mainly for the benefit of those who have subscribed since my last posting on the subject this is another appeal for help with the FreeCEN project. Access to UK census information generally depends on being able to get to a local studies library or LDS centre, buying a scan or a copy on CD or relying on someone to do a look up for you. The FreeCEN project is aiming to change all that by making the information available on the internet in full and absolutely free of charge. We have the full support of LDS who have kindly loaned us the data on microfiche. The task of transcribing the data onto a specially designed software data base is being undertaken by hard working and dedicated family history enthusiasts from all over the world on an unpaid basis. I am responsible for co-ordinating the Bristol & South Gloucestershire sub project working initially on the 1891 census. We are making reasonable progress but I need more Transcribers and Checkers. If you have access to a microfiche reader, believe, as we do, that this information should be freely accessible and can spare a few hours each week then I would be delighted to hear from you.
