For what it is worth in confirmation, I have clear records of the same two great-grandparents being married twice; the two events being with 2-3 days of each other; in Bath in May of 1814; once in the established church of St. Swithins and again in the RC St. Johns the Evangelist. Is anyone else interested in this family? Sara White
Is anyone else in this family? I've got a lot of information to share and would love to contact other researchers! Sara White
James White was born in Yeovil in about 1816, the son of William White. He married Jane Burbage and had a son Herbert and a daughter Mary Jane. This much I am certain of, and have a lot of information to share with anyone who is interested. Family "lore" says that James was in some way connected with the White family who were important tradesmen in the town, running a furnishing and upholstery business, and at one period owning a skating rink. This family consisted of Henry White (1839-1901) married Caroline Rosa (surname unknown) (1843-1918) and had sons Albert Ernest (1874-1924), William Henry C (1871-1917) and Frederick Arthur (1877-1881), all of whom died unmarried. Does anybody know anything about them which could help me? Even negative information would be helpful! Finally, Elizabeth Daich reported the death of William White in 1845 and Elizabeth his wife in 1840. It seems to me to be likely that she is a relative, as she registered both deaths. Can anybody suggest a link? Sara White
Sarah Webber married William Delamont in Hardington Mandeville in 1763. Hardington Mandeville is on county border with Dorset and is close to that with Devon. At that time she was "of this parish" but I have not been able to find her baptism. Has anyone noticed any suitable record? Sara White
George Watts was born about 1811 in "Bowshepe", which may be in Sussex or Kent (but is not to be found in any map or gazetteer I have ever seen) or he may have been born in Taunton, Somerset. What is certain is that he was married to Minerva Sweet in Stoke St Gregory, Somerset, in 1830 and that is where they stayed for the rest of their lives, as did several of their children. Is anyone else interested in this family? Can anyone suggest where Bowshepe may be? Or has anyone spotted a baptism for George Watts anywhere in Somerset around the year 1811? Sara White
Judith Templar married John Booby in 1673 in Stoke St Gregory, Somerset. Can anyone help me find her baptism? Sara White
Minerva Sweet born somewhere in Somerset, between 1805-1812 and in Stoke St Gregory, Curry Rival and Aller by her own account and probably somewhere else entirely and possibly out of the time frame mentioned above! She married George Watts in 1830 and had children 1831 to 1850 so I think she must have been born between 1805 and 1815. Can anyone help me find the baptism/parents/siblings of my elusive ancestor? Sara White
So far as I know, I have no Osmond ancestors. However, I do have an ancestor, Osmond Burbage, who was born about 1746 (I don't know where) and married in Yeovil in 1785. The highly unusual Christian name of Osmond seems to me to be likely to be the surname of someone important to the Burbage family, or at least to this part of it (perhaps it is his mother's maiden name). Has anyone spotted any connection between an Osmond family and a Burbage family?

Hello Tina The records you will probably need are those for the Catholic Chapel in new Wardour Castle. I have checked the Cof E baps for you and there is no Juliana. Unfortunately the Wardourrecords are not easy to come by. Catholic records are not public records and do not have to be deposited in ROs in the same way as CofE records. Until fairly recently, the Wardour records remained in the hands of the Arundel family and were not available for inspection. Luckily the family have now allowed the Wiltshire Record Office to film them and I beleive there is now a copy in the Society of Genealogists. The LDS have not filmed them and they are not on the IGI or the BVRI. Wilts RO have put most of their parish records onto fiche but the Wardour records are on film only. If you want to go to the Wilts RO to view them, you will need to ring in advance to book the film reader (you do not need to book in advance to use the fiche readers) I don't know where you live but these records are well worth a trip to Wiltshire or London to view. Certainly the 18th century records are more detailled than their Cof E equivalent - in the baptism record you get the childs date of birth as well as baptism, the place where they lived, the Mother's maiden name and the names of the sponsors/Godparents. Although marriages in the Catholic Church were illegal until 1837, there were a number of illegal marriages which have been recorded . You will also find confirmation records. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Wardour Estate was the biggest Catholic community outside of London and many people in the Tisbury area were employed on the estate and used the Chapel for their baps, marriage and burial ceremonies (legal or otherwise). Old Wardour Castle was destroyed in the English Civil War. The ruins are owned by English Heritage and open to the public. The film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves was partially filmed there. You can see the remains of the original chapel and inscriptions carved into the wall by Catholic recusants in the 17 th century. New Wardour Castle is close by. I am not sure what it is used for now - possibly private flats. It has been both a school and a hotel and it was up for sale a few years ago. The Chapel is still there and still in use. You need to contact the Priest for admission however and one of these days I intend to find out who he is and try to visit! Web site, and contacted him regarding obtaining my fathers Royal Flying Corps Service record from WWI. His fee was Forty Pounds Sterling, which I sent him by way of a Sterling Money Order which was cashed on Nov 13th 2002. His initial E mail stated that any records found would be sent within 28 days after getting his fee. It is now some 75 Plus days and NO records and just one contact since his getting my money order. An E mail to the PRO got a reply that he was removed from the list of recommended researchers in July of last year, for his tardiness in doing research and not keeping in touch with paying customers. Can any of the UK members give me any ideas as to what if anything can be done. If any members who are thinking of getting someone to get records of servicemen from either War contact me off list and I will give you this so called researchers name etc. I am loathe to publicly list it on any of these mailing lists, but will do so privately. Hello All, I'm new to this list and would like to post my interests: NEVELL City of Oxford and Great Tew, Oxon BROOKS West Hanney, Berks BAILEY Swallowfield, Berks My ggg grandfather William Nevell (b 1804/5 Great Tew, d 1883 Oxford) married Jane Hunter Brooks of West Hanney. I believe she was the daughter of Giles Brooks and Jane Hunter. I haven't been able to take either line back any further. My gg grandfather (on another side) Charles Bailey was born in 1809 in Swallowfield and was the son of Charles Robert Henry Bailey, also of Swallowfield. He had a brother, Frederick, and both were the sons of Charles Bailey of Swallowfield (d 1805) and his wife Elizabeth. If anyone else is researching these families I'd be delighted to hear from them. My forebear, Samuel HARFORD, who claimed to be from Tisbury was baptised at Heytesbury at the same time as his brother Robert. He was married at Heytesbury and at the time of his arrest for Machine Breaking was living at Heytesbury. Later after his pardon when applying to emigrate he again stated that his residence was Heytesbury. However, his convict records give his NP (presumably native place/parish) as Tisbury. From the baptism his parents names are William and Elizabeth HARFORD. I can find not other records for these parents at Heytesbury so wonder if they were from Tisbury. Hope some one can throw some light on this.
