    1. [WSX] Interests in Blockley?
    2. Kaye Purnell
    3. G'day Any Australian members with BLOCKLEY interests may like to contact Ron Abbey's Bookhouse in Bowral http://www.abebooks.com/home/RABOOKHOUSE/ I was in there today and noticed they had 2 books and about 10 booklets pertaining to the history of Blockley. Unfortunately they do not appear to be on their catalogue so you would have to ring them for titles and prices. I think they must be newly in as I have not noticed them before. They are in excellent condition and are competitively priced with other on-line booksellers when you take currency conversion into account. If they can't find them tell them they are in the England part of the Other Lands? Foreign Lands? (or something like that) section. 1. [WSX] MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi listers Last Autumn, this society produced its first CD of Monumental Inscriptions. This was based on the parish of Horspath, and contained photographs of the church and each individual headstone, as well as a transcription of each MI. Navigation on the CD is by means of a clickable plan view of the churchyard. The data is in HTML format. It requires a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, to be installed on the user's computer. It does not require that you have an internet connection. I'm now pleased to advise you that the society's second such Monumental Inscriptions CD is about to be released on general sale. This is based on the parish of Eynsham, and similarly contains photographs of the church and each individual headstone, as well as a transcription of each MI. Again, navigation is by means of a clickable plan view of the churchyard. At the moment, just the Horspath CD appears on the society's website. However, Eynsham will appear on there in a couple of days. If you're interested in this CD, please keep an eye on the section entitled "Monumental Inscriptions" at :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html Any queries, please let me know. 1. RE: [WSX] SWEET in Aller, Curry Rival, Stoke St Gregory, Somerset
    2. Morse Geoff
    3. Hi Sara My g3 grandmother was a SWEET and I'm wondering if there is a connection with yours. In the 1851 Census for Banwell, her name is quoted as being Billender, her age suggests she was born in 1804 and the birthplace is quoted as being Ollard. I don't know of a place with this name, but it could be a mis-spelling of Aller. She married William FOLLETT, probably in the early 1830's, but I don't know exactly when and my g2 grandfather John FOLLETT was born in 1840, the mother's name being quoted as Belanda. In the 1881 Census for Banwell, Belinda gives her birthplace as Bridgewater. Geoff Morse Hertfordshire -----Original Message----- From: Sara White [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 01 February 2003 10:02 To: [email protected] Subject: [WSX] SWEET in Aller, Curry Rival, Stoke St Gregory, Somerset Minerva Sweet born somewhere in Somerset, between 1805-1812 and in Stoke St Gregory, Curry Rival and Aller by her own account and probably somewhere else entirely and possibly out of the time frame mentioned above! She married George Watts in 1830 and had children 1831 to 1850 so I think she must have been born between 1805 and 1815. Can anyone help me find the baptism/parents/siblings of my elusive ancestor? 3. Further to the obituary Mary found I offer this Edwin Thomas Shute and his wife Elizabeth received today. I was so struck by the coincidence that I have to share it. I have traced a Great Uncle Harvey Rawles, (Methodist family) from Bere Regis via Bishop Auckland and St Martins, Shropshire to the Rhaggatt Estate near Corwen in Merioneth in 1891 and 1901 censuses. He was a game keeper so I asked the Merioneth List who was living at Rhaggatt Hall. The owners were evidently not in residence but this is the kind reply I received from one of the listers:- "As for the occupants of Rhaggatt Hall, all I know is from the 1881 census and that at that time it was an Edwin Thomas Shute and his wife Elizabeth. His occupation listed as coachman and he was born in Taunton, Somerset." 1. [WSX] Look ups
    2. Sorry about last email...had a senior moment (suffering from AnnesHill Itus) and it came out rather garbled: Re Portsea/Portsmouth checking BMD 1/4 isn't enough as there were many many entries & some 80+ churches for the area so a GRO index look would be needed first by you to provide a date. Meant to say that for a baptism look up, the GRO quarter is not enough as a baptism could have taken place years after the birth whereas at least with marriage or burials, the parish register entry has a pretty good chance of being in the quarter that the event took place. In Portsea, an address is useful if you don't have IGI data, so that at least we can narrow down the choice of church. Thanks folks Linda & Tony

    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi Helen > Although marriages in the Catholic Church were illegal until 1837, there were a number of illegal marriages which have been recorded. From my experience of using pre-1837 Roman Catholic records in South Lancashire, I can confirm that such marriages were quite common. However, they will often be found in two registers - in the RC register and in the local C of E register as well. This suggests that the couple held two ceremonies. Their marriage in the eyes of the law would be that carried out in the established church, whilst that in the eyes of the faith would be the ceremony carried out in the Catholic Church.
