Dear List, Was someone looking for the name MAIS this past week or so? I was just following up on some info supplied by Jo and came across a John MAIS who was curate at St James Bristol in 1806 at the marriage of my GASTRELL/ ALVIS couple. Hi All, Could somebody please explain the difference between being married by Banns and a License. Also why would somebody get married in an Independent chapel and not their local Church. Could it possibly be that one was from out of the Parish? My Great grandparents were married in one such chapel. No child was born within 2yrs, so that was not the reason. One G.P. was from outside the parish so could this be why? Best wishes Andy Penton Mewsey, Hants.
Hi Andy & List, Marriages by license were a lot quicker than having to wait for banns to be read on three Sundays before the wedding. I have an ancestor who married the same day that he signed the license. Licenses could be used to get around the problem of opposisition to the union, you could marry before anyone found out about it. You could also try looking for a christening about six months after the wedding, that is another reason to get married before anything shows. People married in chapels because they were non-conformists, they were baptists, methodists etc. and didn't follow the Church of England. There are quite a few marriage licenses around, non-conformist registers can be more difficult to access. Regards, Ian in sunny France

Glyn, One thing to look out for is that some of your HALEs may appear under the surname HOLE, which is also common in your areas of interest. Hi Would like to contact any decedents of the FOOT[E] from Wiltshire [ 19th century], Somerset or Gloucester to progress family tree Robert
Hi I am trying to find any descendents of Joseph and Sarah WITHERS [ nee HALL] , my grandparents, whose address at 1901 census was : 41 Oak Road, Horfield, Bristol regards Robert in North Wales
Hi Can anyone help me to confirm the parents of Joseph FOOT[E] who married Catherine DIBBEN [ DYBBEN] on 7th. December 1785 at Gussage St. Michael [ Dorset ] , Joseph was born in Berwick St. John [ Wiltshire ] There were many Foot families in that area and I believe they were related in some way. Possible parents could be Robert and Fortune Foot of Berwick St. John and Gussage St Michael or Joseph and Sarah Foot [ nee Brewer] in 1757 Any clues appreciated to help solve a 2o year old mystery ! Regards Robert in North Wales
Hi all. I've noticed a few new names recently, so thought I would have another bash at my elusive ALMOND family from Camerton/Clandown/Midsomer Norton or thereabouts. If anyone has any ALMOND, ALMON, ALLMON, ALLMOND, ALLMAN or ALMANs in their tree from that area, I'd be glad to hear from them! Best wishes, Colin Hunt.
Dear Listers, I must apologise if this is a repeat message but the previous one which I tried to send didn't appear in my in-box. So, please bear with me. John SIMS of Bradford, Wilts was the bondsman for the marriage of Thomas PENNY and Elizabeth MARKS on 13th November 1798. This suggests that either the bride or the groom had connections in Bradford. If anyone knows anything relevant to this or the identity of John SIMS I would love to hear. Thanks, Maurice Snowdon in Sheffield

Just found on "ebay" under USA sellers and thought this may be of interest to those researching Phelps and Sheppard. "Handwritten English vellum indenture dated 1684, during the reign of Charles II, being the conveyance of a parcel of land in Calne in the County of Wiltshire between Richard Phelps, a Yeoman, of the one part; and Robert Sheppard, a Mercer, of the second part. Nicely penned with some flourishes and initial letter incorporating the date." The actual web page has some pictures of the indenture on http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2505710312&category=356 Hoping they fit into someones tree! Sarah
Can anyone give me the dates for Marriage indexes for Bristol. I have a marriage I want to check but don't want to pay out for the certificate! This is William Barfoot HUNT to Sarah Brabner, widow in the 4th quarter 1878 in Bristol. The same applies to a death - I don't want to waste my money! I have the burial entry for Robert WARREN aged 52 in Marnhull, Dorset 27 1 1894 but no entry in Sturminster just one in Bristol. So either he died at Bristol and his body returned to Marnhull or the entry was recorded in Sturminster Register records but did not get through to the national registers. Hi List, Back to my brickwall of the baptism of JOHN PARSONS eldest son of HENRY PARSONS born 1816 to 1818 in the Salisbury area. John Parsons married Emma Newhan in 1843 coming to New Zealand the next month together with his brother William and wife Elizabeth, both John and William married in St Edmund Salisbury. They said they were from Bishopstone on the shipping list. William was baptised at Bishopstone the son of Henry and Elizabeth ( Hopkins ) together with a number of other children, and where Henry and Elizabeth are buried. I have Henry's line back to Sixpenny Handerly, but where was John baptised ? Any help would be wonderful. Thanks Daphne NEW ZEALAND.

Hi Kevin! I have no HILLIER connections but have had a look in the PR transcripts for the 2 Marlborough parishes with no positive results. Presumably the details of John b 1792 were from a different source since he was not baptised in either of the Anglican parishes (St Peter or St Mary) Cheers Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: "kevinsobey" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 10, 2003 12:17 AM Subject: [WSX] hillier > Hi all, > Can anybody help me. > My ancestors are > John Hillier b 1792, Marlborough, his wife Jane b 1800, son John Foach Hillier b 1833. > I cannot connect them with any English Hilliers but suspect that there may be a connection with Thomas Hillier 1730 m Joan Foach, & their son William m Elizabeth Foach 1768. > Any help appreciated. > Kevin > > > ==== WESSEX-PLUS Mailing List ==== > For Oxfordshire family history visit:- > The Oxfordshire FHS www.ofhs.org.uk > >
