A change in legislation which meant that vicars were required to use new registers from 1813. This cut off date often comes at a suitable juncture for some transcribers - eg one County FHS has, I believe, transcribed all the PRs in the county from 1813 - 1837 ? There are other dates which some transcribers also work to, for similar reasons, eg 1837 and 1754. Is there some kind soul who has easy access to the Taunton RO who is willing to look up an actual PR for me? I have looked at the film for the Parish Church of Chard at my local LDS centre but the entries I am interested in are very feint and difficult to read. I need someone with access to the original PRs to check them for me. They are all Baptisms and I have guessed the following names although the dates were a bit easier: Date Child's Name Father Mother Surname 29/6/1797 Henry? William Ann Keetch 22/5/1796 Sarah Robert Betty Keetch 16/4/1797 Will Robert Betty Keetch 25/12/1797 Betty Saml?James? Sarah Kitch 10/12/1797 Sarah Saml? James? Sarah Kitch Any help will be greatly appreciated. I also have the microfiche for the parish Church of Combe St Nicholas, Somerset. Although I do not have a reader and use the one at the library, I am willing to do lookups for anyone who would like to contact me off list. Please enter the word LOOKUP in the subject line of your email

I am new to this list. I have been working primarily on my paternal side which has encompassed Yorks (initially from Church/Castle Gresley Derby) and Stuarts (from Aberdeen Scotland). Anyone with an interest in the name of STRANGE might like to visit my web site where they will find (amongst other topics) a one name study. In addition to transcriptions from national and international records there is a considerable amount of county-based event information; Berkshire and Oxfordshire are particularly well covered. If you would like to share your family knowledge or queries with like- minded folk then you may care to sign up to my mail list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/STRANGE_thename Regards Mike STRANGE www.yourtotalevent.com

Hi all. Just thought I would wish anyone attending the up-coming FHF a happy and profitable visit. Sadly, it being on a Sunday preculdes some of us from attending. I shall be hard at work along the road from the Pavilion, in my capacity as Director of Music at St. Mary's, Bathwick, so if anyone fancies a bit of spiritual uplift before the Fair, we'd be delighted to see you at the 10.30 Sung Eucharist! Good wishes to all. Colin Hunt.
Hello, I'm having trouble with the parents of my Rose PRING. Her obituary says that she was from an old Taunton family, but the census data gives her father as being born in Chippenham, Wiltshire and her mother from Broadclyst, Devon. Does anyone have access to the baptism records for Chippenham, Wiltshire? I'm looking for a baptism of a Charles or James D. PRING/RING somewhere between about 1853 and 1856. Below are the census entries for 1881 and 1901. They are the only entries that appear for the name Lily PRING/RING, but the parents names are different in both cases. Any light that can be shed on the identity of Rose's parents will be greatfully received. 1881 Census Dwelling: Castle Green Census Place: Bishops Hull, Somerset, England Source: FHL Film 1341570 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 2369 Folio 5 Page 6 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Charles RING M 28 M Chippenham, Wiltshire, England Rel: Head Occ: Farrier Frances RING M 26 F Broad Clist, Devon, England Rel: Wife Robert RING 2 M Taunton, Somerset, England Rel: Son Lily RING 2 m F Taunton, Somerset, England Rel: Daur Charles BOUNE 18 M Ilminster, Somerset, England Rel: Lodger Occ: Brewer 1901 Census Schedule Number 113, 12 Greenbrook Terr??, Taunton St James Without James D. Hi listers I mentioned last week that the Oxfordshire FHS range of Monumental Inscription CDs for sale was about to be doubled ! Well it has, from one to two !!! Please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html These CDs are created by Alan Simpson and contain photographs of the church and each MI as well as transcriptions of each MI. Navigation is by means of a clickable plan view of the churchyard. The two parishes now available are :- Horspath MIs Eynsham MIs These CDs are in HTML format, not PDF. They require a web browser (such as Internet Explorer) to be installed on your computer. They do NOT require that you have an internet connection. Very best wishes. Dear all, Spotted this in today's FT - thought it might be of interest: "The credibility of the 2001 census has been questioned after independent research [by MORI] suggested the population of the London borough of Westminster was higher than the census figure..." Mike
Could some kind person answer me 'of air', I cannot remember how to send a gedcom of one branch of the family plus their descendants, did it years ago and I know it was simple but cannot find out how now. Toni.
Andy Agree with Ian Using a license also made it easier if you didn't live in the area eg if both parties were working away from the area. As you are probably aware it is traditional for a marriage to take place in the bride's church or chapel. According to the Church Census, completed in 1851, over 40% of the church going population attended non-conformist churches, so if people come up against brick walls they should always explore the possibility that their relatives might've been non-conformists. I fully agree with Ian that non-conformist registers can be difficult to access - I have 2 lots of great grand parents who married in non-conformist churches: I can find no trace of one set of registers and I have to contact the church to gain access to the other ;-) Regards Paul On Thu, 13 Feb 2003 04:38:21 EST, [email protected] wrote: >Hi Andy & List, > >Marriages by license were a lot quicker than having to wait for banns to be >read on three Sundays before the wedding. >I have an ancestor who married the same day that he signed the license. >Licenses could be used to get around the problem of opposisition to the >union, you could marry before anyone found out about it. >You could also try looking for a christening about six months after the >wedding, that is another reason to get married before anything shows. > >People married in chapels because they were non-conformists, they were >baptists, methodists etc. and didn't follow the Church of England. > >There are quite a few marriage licenses around, non-conformist registers can >be more difficult to access. > >Regards, Ian in sunny France >>Hi All, >>Could somebody please explain the difference between being married by Banns and a License. I have a HALE in my family. William Hale of Staffordshire, from the mid 1800s. I don't really know much more than that. He was the first husband of my grandmother Sara Jane Atkins Hale.
