Would anybody have any information Spye Park House which stood in Spye Park near Bowden Hill in Wiltshire and was owned by the Spicer family until destroyed by fire sometime around 1974. I believe there was feature at the time in one of the newspapers of the house and it's history and reports on the fire which completely gutted the building and it had to be eventually demolished. The house was built c1650 and was changed many times and I believe was also burned to the ground in the mid 1800's before being built again from the ruins. I am anxious to get as much info on the history of this house if anybody has any info to share and would be most grateful for their help. Thanks GERRY
I have just joined the list and am researching 'my' branch of the Seward family in the Chard district of Somerset. My 2x great grandfather was FRANCIS SEWARD born abt. 1814 in Chard according to censuses. So far I have been unable to find the names of his parents. I can find no birth or baptism for him and his marriage certificate to JANE BROWN in ILMINSTER is in pre 1837 format so father's name is not given, If any of these names appear in anyone's research I would love to hear from them please. Here's hoping! Lesley

Does anyone in or around Perth, Australia have any census, immigration info or know anyone by this name ? KEMBREY-KEMBRY ? Please reply to the list as sometimes I am unable to receive mail from OZ. I know there are some KEMBREY names in the phone book, but have not beenable to contact them. I hope to visit the area later in the year. Thanks for any type of info, B/M/Ds that may help trace my relatives. Some lived in GLoucestershire and some in Wiltshire, England in the 1800s Thanks Mary in California
Hello everyone, I had quite a few very helpful replies to my 1851 census query about Wroughton and Swindon. To make sure I thank everyone, I am replying on the list. Thank you! I am researching in Wiltshire: BARRETT/HEATH - John, b. abt. 1791 Wroughton m. Elizabeth ??? b. abt. 1784 Lyddiard. (the couple from the census who MAY be my relatives) If they are, their son was John, chr. August 30 1814, Wroughton. Married in 1837 to Sarah BOYD, ill. daughter of Sarah Boyd (BOYD from Melksham. The father was Jacob FERRIS). John and Sarah's children: Mary - about 1839, Wootton Bassett Sarah Ann - about 1844, Wootton Bassett m. Lewin Woodward, had a daughter Emily in 1865 Julia Susan, born 1846 in Wootton Bassett, married William Davies & lived in Wales William, b. abt. 1849, Wootton Bassett George, b. abt. 1854, Wootton Bassett Emily Sabina, b. 1856 Wootton Bassett. Married Walter Sidney Clegg in 1882 in Cardiff, Wales Sometime between 1856 and 1871 the family changed their name from HEATH to BARRETT. I believe they were still HEATH in 1861, as when I was beginning this branch I checked the Wootton Bassett 1861 census and could not find them. However, in 1851 and 1871 they were living at High Street, Wootton Bassett, so it is probable that they were living on the High Street, Wootton B. under the name of Heath in 1861. My ggg grandfather John's christening record is as follows: NAME: John Heath SURNAME: Barrett Parents: John and Elizabeth. Residing at Wroughton, father's profession: soldier. Hi Maureen > I seem to recall that there was an 1851 census Disk available for Wiltshire. Is this true? If so, could svks who has the disk look for the following: In the last (December 2002) edition of the "Oxfordshire Family Historian", my *independent* review of this CD was published. So as to assist you and other listers, I'm reproducing it below. I've had a very quick look for the family that you're interested in. I can't readily spot them, but I'll check again when I've more time... Paul Gaskell Publicity Officer and Minutes Secretary Oxfordshire Family History Society E-mail : [email protected] Website : www.ofhs.org.uk ============== CD REVIEW WILTSHIRE 1851 CENSUS This CD is available by post from Mrs Pat Wilson, 11 Ardmore Close, GLOUCESTER GL4 0BJ. Payment in Sterling £22.50 plus postage and packing of 72 pence within the UK, £1.20 rest of Eurpoe, £1.66 in USA or Canada, or £1.72 rest of the world. Also available via Genfair http://www.genfair.com for those wishing to pay by credit card. Minimum requirements: Windows 95, 98, ME, XP or NT 4.0 : a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels : IBM PC or equivalent with at least a 486 processor, 16 MB of RAM and 5Mb of free hard disk space. Also available on the disk is the data in Adobe Acrobat format (which can be used on Apple Mac's) and Microsoft Access database format. Most family historians will have used the 1851 census at some point in their research. Typically, this will have been at a local research centre or record office, when a microfilm reproduction of the original enumerators book will have been on offer. Alternatively, it might have been at home, using a transcription obtained from a family history society on microfiche. So when faced with the opportunity to purchase the transcription on CD at a cost in excess of £20, the researcher is likely to question whether this expenditure will give them added value. As I do not have Wiltshire ancestry, I picked up this CD with an open mind. It loaded onto my PC without problem, just three clicks of the mouse and it was up and running. The data is included on the CD in three formats, its own search programme which is the default, portable document format which is read using the free Adobe Acrobat reader, and as a Microsoft Access database. It is only possible to use the information in the latter format if the researcher already has Access on their machine, but the Acrobat reader is included on the census CD. The default search programme is extremely intuitive and easy to use. The initial screen gives the researcher five options, which include both to view the census as enumerated and to view the census in surname order. Both of these options produce reports in WordPad format, which can be printed, saved, manipulated or copied and pasted with ease. Of course, this is subject to the usual copyright restrictions. Another option on the initial screen is the Find Ancestor button. This takes the researcher to a search screen, from which the data on the CD can be interrogated. Possible search fields include forename, surname, year of birth, county of birth, place of birth, census address and occupation. Different combinations of these search criteria can be used, whilst the programmes power can be fully exploited by the use of wildcards and soundex searches. This is undoubtedly the area in which this CD stands out from the crowd. Searches are easy to set up, and the results appear in seconds. As an example, I searched on Oxford as the place of birth. Within 45 seconds, the programme had returned the 110 individuals included within the 1851 census of Wiltshire who had given Oxford as their place of birth. This output was in an indexed format, but with just one click to move to the as enumerated view. These results are produced within the programme itself, but just once click facilitates their export into WordPad for saving and further manipulation. Having explored this CD for a good number of hours, I must report that I am unable to find any shortcomings whatsoever in it. It is a truly excellent product, and a marvellous resource for those researching their Wiltshire ancestry. Furthermore, others thinking of producing census transcriptions on CD would do well to study this product carefully. In my view, it has set new standards and is the benchmark against which they will be judged. Paul Gaskell Publicity Officer Oxfordshire Family History Society

Hello I seem to recall that there was an 1851 census Disk available for Wiltshire. Is this true? If so, could svks who has the disk look for the following: John Barrett OR John Heath and wife Elizabeth Barrett OR Elizabeth Heath. In the 1810s they had my ggg grandfather John Barrett/Heath in Wroughton. On the baptism record, the father is listed as a Soldier. I imagine he would have been born in the 1790s. It is difficult to tell what name the family was using at that time - John junior used HEATH at the time of the 1851 census, but by 1871 the entire family was using BARRETT. HEATH seems more likely for his parents, but I am not sure. Thank you! Best Wishes Taryn Jones Canada __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi listers Wednesday 11 June 2003 marks the second Family Tree Day in Oxfordshire, which on this occasion will be held at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies. This will be a family history extravaganza not to be missed. Hosted by the staff of the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies in conjunction with the Oxfordshire FHS, the day will have numerous attractions including: 1. Computer demonstrations by some of the members of the society's Computer Group. Topics likely to be covered include family history on the internet, family history data on CD and genealogy computer packages. 2. The chance to browse and make purchases from the society's extensive bookstall, thereby avoiding those irritating postal charges. 3. The opportunity to make purchases of microfiche and CD-ROMs from the society. The society's computerised search services and computerised birth brief index will also be available for consultation. However, probably the best feature of Family History Day will be the opportunity for family historians to consult records of relevance to their research with an expert at their elbow. The researcher will be able to use the Centre's records and resources, and then to discuss their problems and findings with members of the society committee and other experienced family historians. We can't guarantee that visitors will leave the venue with a complete pedigree back to William the Conqueror, but nevertheless we hope that the day will prove to be an enjoyable and thought-provoking event. Family Tree Day will be held from noon to 5pm on Wednesday 11 June 2003 at:- The Centre for Oxfordshire Studies Central Library Westgate Oxford OX1 1DJ Admission is free and all visitors are welcome. The Centre for Oxfordshire Studies web site is at http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cos Updates about the event will be published at http://www.ofhs.org.uk/FTday.html Any queries, please contact me. Hi Folks, Is there anyone with a 1861 census of Somerset, I am looking for the whereabouts of Mary Tudball, born Timberscombe 1848, Mother is Sarah, Born Wooton Courtney about 1821. Sarah married again and I dont know here married name. I think they are in the Minehead area but I am not sure. If anyone can point me in the right direction of the '61 census I would appreciate it. Thanks geoff Gibbs
I am trying to confirm the place of birth of my 3x gr grandfather Charles Dunford and was wondering whether any one had access to the parish records for Queen Charlton Somerset. According to the 1881 census he was born here in about 1830.but the 1851 census gives his place of birth as Chilfrome Dorset. A lookup would be most appreciated as it would clarify which is correct. Thanks Andrew Pardoe
Hi All, Could sks check the 1891 Census, Reading, Berks for my GG Uncle George A HILLIER b 1890, Reading, Berks. His father may have been William HILLIER. The only info I have is from George A HILLIER's 'Attestation Papers' for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in 1914. I can't find any details for his birth 23 Apr 1890, nor his marriage to Violet GODDARD b 21 Mar 1894, Cricklade, Wilts. I presume George A went to Canada (don't know if he immigrated with his parents or alone), then joined the Canadian Army and volunteered for Overseas Expeditionary Force in 1914 and came to Britain and met or remet Violet and married. George A and Violet moved to Canada in 1919, settled in Lindsay, Hamilton, Ontario in 1951. There is no trace of their marriage in Canada. I have a copy of George A attestation papers, which shows his next of kin as William HILLIER, Blewbury, Nr Didcot, Berkshire. Unfortunately the GODDARDs moved around a great deal, I think Violet & her family were in Ireland c1901 & in Herefordshire 1903, so I'm not sure where Violet was living when she and George A would have married. Any information regarding the above will be greatly appreciated no matter how small. Regards Sue, Shropshire.
