Hello all we have just acquired some new fiche for 6 additional parishes. We have updated our website with the details if you to <A HREF="http://www.knightsure.co.uk/knightroots/genealogy"> www.knightsure.co.uk/knightroots/genealogy</A> and click on the resources link on left. These updates enable us to do look ups from any of these items. Please feel free to e-mail us with your look ups but please remember however that a registration district (as per the GRO or free BMD) may consist of several parishes - details of Hampshire Registration Districts can be found on the Hampshire GENUKI site. Also a birth quarter off the GRO or FreeBMD may have no bearing at all on baptism date. If we can help, we will Take care Linda & Tony

Dorset is certainly in my area Charles, and I thank you for the information you give. Was Samuel bapt on 27th January 1777 and the son of Peter and Mary, do you know? Siblings - Ann; John; Jenny; Susannah. You are correct in the large number of STURMEY in the Dorset area, It makes up the bulk of my meagre database so far. About 650 to date, sadly, most have very limited information attached at present. Richard >>Hello Richard, >>I don't know whether Dorset is in your area, but Mary Green (baptised 1777) >>married Samuel Sturmy in 1803 at Piddletrenthide. Mary was the daughter of >>Grace Harben by her first husband, William Green. >>Sturmy was not an uncommon name in parts of Dorset. >>Regards, Charles Sankey, Johannesburg > Good morning Listers, > I would first like to state my Family interests in > the area - > STURMY - every and all instance of, including > place names. > LOO; SISOM; REEVES - Gloucester > DUTTON - Gloucester butchers; circa 1850s > DAVIS & COX - Burbage, Wiltshire (I know about the > Burbage List) > PARSONS; TROTT/TRATT; HOOPER; PERRAM - Catcott & > surrounds, Som. > Richard Parsons --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Dear List Members I have just subscribed to the list in hope that somebody may be able to help me. I have been looking on the census of 1901 and found that my great grandfather came from Winterbourne, Salisbury, Wiltshire. I have been in touch with the registry offices for birth certificates but they say they have no info on him. Great grandfather's name was Frank and at some stage Frank, Roland and family must have moved up to Norfolk. I have more info of the family living in the Norfolk area as my late grandfather told me about him. Any help would be gratefully accepted. Many thanks David

Amando is dative = To Amanda (unless, that is, it is a gerundive, also dative = to the loving one : but this seems less likely ) Ultimo die = on the last day [time when = ablative] mensis Octobris = of the month of October [genitive] This could have been written, more elegantly, as Amando qui objit pridie Kal Novembris which is how a Roman would have referred to that day. The year is a bit of a problem, if the transcription is correct and nothing has been worn away over the centuries. Possible VC was an unorthodox way the stonemason had of writing five hundred - which should be D, thus with the millmo (1000) giving a total of 1516 . Alternatively the V should be a D, making 1616. The latter is perhaps more likely. Context would help. > From: [email protected] > Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 04:45:11 EST > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [WSX] DUDLEY > Resent-From: [email protected] > Resent-Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 02:45:27 -0700 > > In a message dated 07/03/2003 01:01:00 GMT Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > >> Amando qui obiit ultimo die mensis Octobris. >> Anno domini millmo VCXVI. > > something like "Amando who died 10 October , year of our Lord 1516" > > Linda & Tony (who wishes he had paid attention to his latin teacher) > > > ==== WESSEX-PLUS Mailing List ==== > To find a UK mailing lists - try John Fuller's page at: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail_country-unk.html > John also includes some useful non-Rootsweb Lists eg Moonrakers etc >

Hi listers On Sunday 23 March 2003, this society will have a "double-header" for those with Oxfordshire research interests, as follows. Firstly, we will be represented at "THE OXFORDSHIRE & BUCKS FAMILY HISTORY FAIR", which although not a society event, will be held at our usual monthly meeting venue. This is Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. The event opens at 10.00am and ends at 5.00pm. The society's stall at this event will feature :- 1. microfiche and CD sales. 2. the society's bookstall. 3. the society's "Search Services" - a computerised database of baptism, marriage, burial, monumental inscription and census data for the county. 4. lots of friendly faces, help and chat. You'll find more details of these products and services on the society's website, including a map showing the location of Exeter Hall :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html The other attraction is that the society's research centre, the Holford Centre, will be open from 9.15am to 12.15pm. For details of the society's resources at this venue and a map showing its location, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/holford.html The Holford Centre is located about ten minutes drive from the Exeter Hall. For those visiting from outside of the area, I can confirm that it's perfectly feasible to go to both venues one after the other. Any queries, please let me know. Hi I am reposting my Wiltshire interest in the HAYTER family. I have a fairly extensive family tree covering the South African branch and have just found out that we have a Wiltshire connection. My info on this is limited to information from the Goldsmiths' Company regarding the coat of arms for my 3 x great grandfather GEORGE SMITH HAYTER which, I am told by the Goldsmiths' Company says he is "Hayter of Salisbury" and mentions Lister of Yorkshire which would refer to his wife ALICE LISTER who was born in Whitgift, Yorkshire. The Goldsmiths' Company also tell me that his father was THOMAS HAYTER, Silversmith, who died in Pentonville, London in 1840, his mother was MARTHA SMITH (daughter of GEORGE and HANNAH SMITH, Goldsmith of London), and his grandfather was JOHN HAYTER, Carver, of Cavendish Street, Middlesex in 1782. George Smith Hayter's coat of arms is the same as Sir William Goodenough Hayter without, of course, the reference to the title, and WGH is also a younger son (reference also made to that fact on the coat of arms). I would love to contact others researching this family and to share my South African family with them. Kind regards Wendy Bloy Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa Researching Hoole (RSA), Hayter (UK & RSA), Atherstone (RSA), Bowker (RSA), Cant (ANS, SCT, CAN & USA), Cumming/s (RSA), Faiers (SFK, UK), Gilfillan (RSA), Pringle (RSA), Southey (RSA), Taute (RSA) and Zondagh (RSA)
