    1. [WSX] Can someone help please?
    2. Simon Fisher
    3. I have just received the marriage certificate of my GG Grandfather John White who married Elizabeth Rixton at Wincanton in Nov 1841. 1). The cert is not very clear, I wonder if SKS would know the exact addresses of where they lived at time of marriage. Looks like John lived at ??? Little Canterbury Place, Lambeth Walk Is there a Lambeth Walk in Somerset? (the only one I know is in Lambeth, Surrey) Looks like Elizabeth lived at Charlton?? Musgrove?? (haven't a clue what this says!) Any ideas? (please look at the cert) http://www.sjfisher.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/John_White_Marriage.htm Thankyou. 2). Is there an 1841 name index for Somerset? As John WHITE married in Nov 1841, I was hoping to find him still living with his father (George WHITE) in the census. Appreciate any little help, thanks. Regards - Simon

    1. [WSX] Dunford Family
    2. I am trying to find out where my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather Charles Dunford was born unfortunately the evidence is contradictory. Briefly this is what is known Charles was born about 1830 and according to the Free BMD married Phyllis Matthews somewhere near Dorchester Sept qtr 1850. On the 1851 census Charles and Phyllis are listed in Toller Porcorum and Charles's place of birth is shown as Chilfrome. Unfortunately there appear to be no baptism record for Charles here. On the 1881 census Charles and Phyllis were living in Markbury Somerset and Charles's place of birth is listed as Queen Charlton. Does any one have access to the parish records for Queens Charlton if so would they be prepared to do a look up? Thanks in anticipation Andrew Pardoe

    3. Thanks to Ian and Elizabeth for the info they have provided about the census 1851. These are the same as the entries given by Elizabeth recorded as STERRING or SHORNEY on Gordon Beavington's version. May I ask if the spelling was the same as on your version Ian, if it was a different version of the 1851? A very grateful Richard Parsons Hi Richard, You've probably been sent this info already but here goes. There are no Sturmeys in 1851 Wiltshire but there are Sturmey and Stermy. High Street, Cricklade. Elizabeth Sturmey (servant) b.1837 (age 14) Shaw Lydiard Tregoze. Shaw, Wootton Bassett. Charles Stermy (ag.labourer) b.1817 Shaw Lydiard Elizabeth b.1812 Wanborough John b.1840 Shaw William b,1841 Shaw George b.1844 Shaw Alfred b.1846 Shaw Edmund b.1848 Shaw Shaw, Wootton Bassett. Elizabeth Stermy (widow) b.1789 Cricklade George (rail labourer) (son) b.1823 Shaw Lydiard Mary (daughter) b.1833 " " I've found that it wasn't just my ancestors had difficulties with spelling - enumerators had problems too. Hope the above is of some use. 1. [WSX] Next week's Oxfordshire FHS Computer Group meeting
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Colleagues The next meeting of the Computer Group of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be held next Monday 7 April 2003 at Oxford University Computing Services, 13 Banbury Road, Oxford. This is located just to the north of St Giles. Doors open at 7:15 pm for coffee, with the presentation starting at around 7.30pm. The evening will comprise a presentation by Graham Hart entitled "FreeBMD". This is a project to make the GRO indexes of births, marriages and deaths freely available on the web, and Hart is one of the three pioneers who has made this possible. It sounds interesting ? Before and after the meeting, there will be a small society bookstall presence, selling the society's CDs and PRO 1901 census vouchers. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions to get there, please see the map linked to the society's website at :- www.ofhs.org.uk For a list of future meetings of the OFHS see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html Any queries, please contact me off-list. 1. [WSX] Fugglestone St Peter Parish Records
    2. Hello Folks, Does anyone have access to the above PRs for 1895? From the IGI I have a marriage for George PAYNE and Ellen Maria LODGE,June 1st 1895 and I would be grateful for the full details. The IGI states that her father was Charles LODGE.I know that there were many LODGEs in the GLS area.I realise that I could apply for the certificate, but there is only a very slight chance that this is the Ellen LODGE that I am looking for as she was born in Ashton,Lancashire. She was with her father Charles (and other family members) in Manchester on the 1891 Census. In return,I will may be able to help with any Manchester look ups. Regards, UK

    3. Hi List Just a couple of comments about this new listing; Search for Marriage Witnesses has been incorporated, Question: Does or would any body use this facility and like it incorporated in future transcriptions???.....see what its like in the above....... Search by Mother or Father Name in Baptisms......same question as above...... Your answers would/will be appreciated so that we can consider whether to make this facility ongoing...... Another note on this transcription----Lydeard St Lawrence appears to me to be a melting pot for the area with names from Milverton, Wiveliscombe, Bishops Lydeard, Stogumber, etc arising on a regular basis, in fact it has really surprised me with different family names mentioned.......it may be worth a look if you have the odd dead end??? 1. [WSX] Microfiche and CD news from OFHS
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi listers There's good news and bad news for Oxfordshire FHS customers on the microfiche and CD front. The good news : two new parish register transcript CDs have now been released, these being Chipping Norton volume 2 and Abingdon volume 1. For details of the parishes included, prices and how to order, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html The bad news : as the turnover of the society has now reached the legal limit, we have had to register with HM Customs and Excise for Value Added Tax (VAT) purposes. Unfortunately, this means that the prices charged to UK customers for microfiche and CD must rise, with the increase being passed on by the society to HM Treasury. Hence, our prices will rise from 1 April 2003 :- 1. if you want to beat this price rise, please place your microfiche and CD orders immediately. 2. sales to overseas customers (ie those outside of the European Union) are not liable to VAT, hence our "overseas" prices are unaffected. Any queries, please let me know. Paul Gaskell Publicity Officer and Minutes Secretary Oxfordshire Family History Society E-mail : [email protected] Website : www.ofhs.org.uk

    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi listers I've already mentioned on the list that the place to be for family history this weekend is Oxfordshire. However, in stocktaking for the society's weekends events, I have been forced to make radical changes to the society's bookstall. This has resulted in :- 1. a lot of price-cutting, with many books now being on sale at up to half price, and 2. a significant quantity of new titles being acquired for sale, some of which are absolute gems. Any lister wanting to peruse the bookstall should visit either :- 1. "THE OXFORDSHIRE & BUCKS FAMILY HISTORY FAIR", to be held on Sunday 23 March 2003, from 10.00am to 5.00pm. 2. our society monthly meeting on Monday 24 March 2003 at 7.15pm. The subject of the talk at 8:00pm is "Using the Library of the Society of Genealogists", by Else Churchill. Both of these events will be held at the Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. For directions to get there, see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html Paul Gaskell Publicity Officer and Minutes Secretary Oxfordshire Family History Society E-mail : [email protected] Website : www.ofhs.org.uk
