    1. [WSX] Joseph WILTON at Lyncombe-Widcome, Moses WILTON at Bitton 1851
    2. Kaye Purnell
    3. G'day Further to this earlier posting (at the end for anyone who missed it) I have found the father Joseph and the rest of the family living Lyncombe-Widcome 1851 census. I am guessing that wife Mary may have been a contributing breadwinner here; that her live-in housekeeper position enabled her to bring with her her 2 oldest sons who may have worked at Kelston Park? It would appear from the census that Joseph was working at Moorland Farm. Searching: LYNCOMBE-WIDCOME51.TXT 2 WILTON Joseph 46 Agricultural Labourer Married Gloucestershire Swineford WILTON Caroline 13 Kelston WILTON James 9 Kelston WILTON Henry 7 Kelston WINGROVE Joseph Lodger 20 Beckington Anyone interested in Joseph WILTON of Swineford married Mary HOLLIS of Marshfield at Marshfield 1825? I can find no other mention of this family in Oz (unless they went to QLD.) Moses WILTON married 1868; said born Bath SOM. After the death of his first wife he married again; this time said born ?????field GLS, parents Joseph and Mary nee LEWIS. Still gives birth c1832. This may be him mis-transcribed in 1851 census; age is out but mother's name fits and father is dead; ????field could be Marshfield. 1944 1851 CENSUS HO107/1944 FF.0001 - 0018 ED.1 & 2 BITTON 1 Piece: 1944 Folio: 0011 Schedule: 008 Address: Kelston Park WITTON Mary HD M 47 House Keeper GLS Marshfield (c1804) WITTON Moses SO U 23 Ag Lab SOM Kelston (c1828) WITTON Joseph SO - 11 Scholar SOM Kelston (c1840) Whizz-bang new GLS Marriage Index shows Joseph WILTON married Mary HOLLIS (this is probably a mis-read from the VIC cert) 28 Feb 1825 Marshfield, which all hangs together OK. The Free BMD gives many possible deaths for a Jospeh WILTON 1839-1851 but Sep Q 1845 Bath 11/3 looks quite promising. Any knowledge out there that could help my correspondent? 1. [WSX] CABELL of North Bradley, Wilts 1700-1800 - AAAgh!!
    2. Dave Rossiter
    3. Hi All, I wasn't going to download another will, But! Remember these? Ann Cabbell or Cabell, Widow of North Bradley Wilts, 19 Feb 1777 Betty Cabell, Spinster of North Bradley Wilts, 10 Oct 1801 Mary Cabell, Spinster of North Bradley Wilts, 28 May 1825 Joseph Cabell, Gentleman of North Bradley Wilts, 03 Apr 1828 I just had to look at Ann Cabell's will - and yes - She is 'My' Prudence's mother, Betty & Mary are Pru's sisters and Joseph is her brother - so the question is - who was the father. Obviously fairly wealthy as bequests of £600 were made by Ann to both the unmarried sisters. If anyone has any ideas - Please, Please let me know - this is driving me up the wall!! I'm posting this query to Somerset & Wilts lists as North Bradley, Wilts. is right next door to Road and Laverton in Somerset (in fact the Parish & County boundaries run down the middle of one of the roads on the north side of Road). Any assistance would be most gratefully received. All the best Dave Rossiter

    1. [WSX] CABELL of North Bradley, Wilts 1700-1800
    2. Dave Rossiter
    3. Hi All, Just when I thought I'd sorted out my Cabell ancestors - with only one link missing - another crowd turn up to confuse things! Having just searched PRO 'Documents Online' for Cabell Wills I have found four for the village of North Bradley. These ranged from 1777 to 1828. Ann Cabbell or Cabell, Widow of North Bradley Wilts, 19 Feb 1777 Betty Cabell, Spinster of North Bradley Wilts, 10 Oct 1801 Mary Cabell, Spinster of North Bradley Wilts, 28 May 1825 Joseph Cabell, Gentleman of North Bradley Wilts, 03 Apr 1828 I would be most grateful in anyone with access to records for North Bradley could check for any Cabell entries. I already know about Prudence Cabell marrying Joshua Parsons (by licence) in 1754. Was Ann Cabbell (Cabell) her mother? was Betty her sister and Mary a niece? Could Joseph have been her nephew? Before I lash out another £12 for more wills it's these questions I need to clarify. And if they didn't originate from here, where did they come from? There is a chance that Non conformity raised it's head in this family, so where would be the place to look if they don't appear in the North Bradley PRs? I'm posting this query to Somerset & Wilts lists as North Bradley, Wilts. is right next door to Road and Laverton in Somerset (in fact the Parish & County boundaries run down the middle of one of the roads on the north side of Road). Any assistance would be most gratefully received. All the best Dave Rossiter

    3. I wonder if there is anyone out there who can help with a puzzle I have been trying to unravel for 6 years!!! My xxxxxgreat-grandfather (give or take a few x) was called Henry Angell. I have found older siblings born in Ogbourne St.George, Thomas 1820 and George 1822 but no trace of Henry. In the 1851 census he is shown as living in OstG with palce of birth Brondford, Wilts. In 1881 and 1901 it is given variously as Bramford, Middx and Bronford, Middx. The parents Robert and Millington married in OstG in 1820 and both died there (at age of 36ish) in 1833. Using IGI and doing a parent search I have not been able to find any other children. but have found a lone Thomas entered by member of LDS church as being born in Middx in 1823 - it is possible that it could be connected as the first Thomas born 1820 died in 1821. Marriage certificate for Henry and Mary for 1850 confirms that his father was Robert. I have tried many sites and been to Society of Genealogists to look at paper documents but have found no leads. Does anyone have any ideas what I could try next? P.s. I cannot find Brondford, Bramford or Bronford anywhere if in Middx could be Brentford or even Cranford. Thanks Linda

    3. Hello Listers In searching my Spencer name 1780 in White Waltham Berks, I have found some entries that might belong. in the parish of Cheriton-Fitzpaine Devon birth for SARAH DISCOMBE 11 JAN 1729 father RICHARD marriage SARAH DOSCOMBE & WILLIAM SPENCER 21 Jan 1757. Birth SARAH SPENCER 25 July 1762 parents Wm & Sarah birth RICHARD SPENCER 10 Feb. 1765 parents Wm & Sarah. ------------------------------------------------------------ Will of 1780 Wm names his son Richard and daughter Sarah as being under 21. This would work out to the age of the above entries and what I know Sarah Spencer was when she married JOHN WIGHT of Guildford Surrey in 1785. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But are these Spencers of Devon my later ones of Berks. Wm married a second time as he mentions the graves of his two wives deceased, also he names his brother-in-law John Harbour, so I think that was the maiden name of his second wife. Sorry for the long message. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. Wm lived at Heywood Manor W. Waltham and owned the Plough at North Town in Cookham Berks Regards Mary

    1. [WSX] Prudence COLLON/COTTON bap. abt 1710
    2. Dave Rossiter
    3. Hi lists, Can anyone help with locating the baptism of the above mentioned Prudence. She married Joseph Cabell at Warminster, Wilts in 1730 but no other mention of the family name COLLON or COTTON appears in the registers (could also be COTLON or COLTON). I expect that Pru would have originated fairly near to Warminster, but could be in Wilts or Somerset. I hope that once her home parish is discovered, this would lead to locating the baptism of her first daughter Prudence Cabell - which at the moment is proving very elusive. Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help Dave Rossiter

    3. Hello listers I have re-registered to this list after a long period away. I would very much appreciate any advice with regards to my brick wall, (unfortunately it is still the same brick wall as when I was last registered) My grandfather John BAKER, enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1914, he gave his address as 102 High Street, Midsomer Norton, Somerset. I have made several searches and have actually been to Midsomer Norton to see this address, but if I was looking correctly it is now a supermarket. There was a Frederick and Ada Matthews living in this address at this time, no sign of John BAKER, I believe he had a sister, but I can't find any evidence to suggest that maybe Ada was John's sister. The other information I have on John BAKER is that he had 4 children with my grandmother, Alice May Thorogood nee Simmonds (they never married), but Alice May was married to George Thorogood. John and Alice May lived in Ilford, Essex until his death on 11th March 1933. Any advice as to how I could find out if John was at 102 High Street in 1914 or why he would have given this address. I have had a search done on my behalf but there was no sign of a John BAKER anywhere! Thank you in advance for any help...
