Surnames: Wisner/Weisner/Wasner/Whisner/Wesner Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WBWBAEB/51.2 Message Board Post: I read that the boats on the way to America made several stops. At each country they stopped a new manifest was written. This resulted in many different name spellings. Two brothers on the same ship could have arrived with different spellings of their last names. Lets don't forget that in the 1800s it was fashionable to spell ones name differently on different documents. The wealthy, hired people to think up differrent spellings of their names. My gggrandfather spelled his name Jacob Wisner b 1821 in PA. His daughter, my ggrandmother spelled her last name Weisner. Jacob was a charcoal burner and a farmer by trade. During the Civil War he was a bugler. He migrated from PA to Caldwell Coutnty KY and is showing on the census on the 1860 Caldwell KY census. The 1870 Spring Lake Dent Mo shows him and his family living there. His name is spelled Wasner in 1870. The Norman Dent MO 1880 shows his name as Wasner. After looking at the actual hand written census I think there is an error in the transcription. It looks like Wesner to me. My grandmother had a letter in her cedar chest she said was from an Uncle. I believe the name was spelled Whisner. On a KY site I saw an old letter to a client that had his name researched. I was suprised at all the spellings. I do believe one was Webner. If I can find that I will post it.

During the Civil War my ggrandfather spelled it Wisner. When my grandfather was at the blind school they spelled it Wasner. We have traced my ggrandfather to Kentucky and on the census record he is from Pennsylvania. His name was Jacob Wesner. There are so many Jacobs with the names spelled differently we haven't been able to locate his family.

    3. I think that the Webner spelling is based on the German script of double-s. WeBner (with some frills or embellishments to the B) is actually Wessner, one of the common spellings of Wesner. If someone wrote WeBner for Wessner, English-speaking/writing folks may just think it Webner. )Another example of the use of double-s is in old English and in Colonial America where double-s looked like "Fs" with the "F" having some frills to it. At least two languages write double-s ("ss") as looking like another letter of the alphabet.) So, I can see how an immigrant to America writing his name WeBner would have it interpreted as Webner instead of Wessner. Once they received the label of Webner during naturalization, they probably just kept it that way. I hope I am making sense here. Most often name changes happen due to a variety of happenstances. The one who recorded census misspells the name or the one who wrote it in some document lacked good penmenship, and so on. I would welcome learning what evidence you have and I need to know if this line you are a part of is from any Wessnerville famlies whose spellings are documented as WESSNER? My line begins with Mahlon Wessner, a tailor, b. 29 Nov 1819 in Amity Twp., Berks Co., married to Mary Ann Fisher b. 1821 at Falkner Swamp Church Lutheran Church, in Montgomery County, Pa. You can read further on this line at: Mahlon Wessner on Rootsweb and there is a gedcom file you can download. I would appreciate learning more? Diane Wesner Marshall

Now, WHERE ARE THE RECORDS from this town such as CENSUS, TAXES, DEEDS, etc.! It seems that when this place changed names to Stony Run, any reffrences to Wessner (Wesner, Woesner and all the other spellings dissappeared too! Doesn't ANYONE live near this place that can find REAL documents: census, etc. and land deeds and at least tell the rest of us out of State relatives, WHERE to find them? Can we politely ask for some feedback please?

    3. Hello, I believe we share a common genealogy/ancestor line. My research shows that three brothers and a sister came to America in 1752, aboard the Duke of Wirtemberg to Philadelphia. Have you been able to determine the parents of Mathia Wesener? Hope to hear from you. 2. Diane, Sorry I don't know anything about Wessnerville, Pa. I wish I did. I do have something about land in Lancaster Co. Pa. for a Jacob Wesner about 1757. It's packed away since I just moved and will have to locate it. My George and Judith Wesner Miller in Washington Co., MD. are a needle in a haystack. Have you spoken to the previous list owner? I think that was his family line. Do you have the info about the village known as WESSNERVILLE, Pa.?
