Author: bobforan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5599/mb.ashx Message Board Post: According to many trees on the web, Lucretia Wells b 13 Aug 1744 (CT/RI) is listed as the daughter of Thomas Wells (b1687 Groton CT) & Elizabeth Howland (b1689 Groton CT). She married Jonathan Jacques/Jackways/Jakweis etc (b1739 CT/RI) in 1762 in Stonington, CT. In 1773 the family moved to Cambridge, NY. In "Genealogical Notes" 1915 by George Thomas Edson (a descendant of Jonathan Jacques & Lucretia Wells) states on p28 "Jonathan Jakway was born July 2, 1739, in Stonington, RI. His wife was Lucretia Wells, born August 13, 1744, in Stonington, RI. They were married in Exeter (RI)." Jonathan's parents, Thomas Jackwais & Hannah Spink, died in 1744 in Exeter "formerly part of Kingston (RI)". Edson says this information comes from the Jonathan Jakway Bible. The problem is that there is no Stonington, RI. There is a Stonington in New London County, CT. Supposedly Asenath 1763 & Cynthia Jakways 1765 were born in Stonington, CT. I have been through the records in Stonington, N. Stonington & Groton and have found no mention of any of these births or marriages. Has anyone found proof for them or that this Lucretia Wells is the daughter of Thomas Wells of Groton (his will does mention a daughter, Lucretia)? More complications: A DAR record (Mrs. Nancy Lee Brown Morgan. DAR ID Number: 13918 ) mentions a Thomas Quinley b1754 Scotland who was married to a Lucretia Wells. He died in New London which is just across the Thames River from Groton. Could this be the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Wells. "The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut (1636-1776)" has this for October 1762: "On the petition of Lucretia Wells, of Groton in the county of New London, vs Obadiah Coats, of Stonington of said county administrator of the estate of David Coats of said Stonington, late deceased, as on file: The question was put, whether anything prayed for in the said petition should be granted: Resolved by this Assembly in the negative Cost allowed respondants is L1 18s. 4d. lawful money. Ex. granted March 11th, 1763" Is this the daughter of Thomas Wells of Groton? If she is the wife of Jonathan Jacques, she would be a Wells in 1762 but a Jakways in 1763. Would be nice to clear up some of these questions with copies of church and/or town records. I'd be happy to share more on the descendants of Jonathan Jacques & Lucretia Wells as follows: Cynthia Jakways b1765 & Oliver Stewart b1761 Lucretia Stewart b1800 & David Brewer b1798 Curtis Abel Brewer b1841 & Eliza Suitor b1844 Charles Henry Brewer b1872 & Helen Coddington b1873 Donald Ellsworth Brewer b1911 & Constance Wyllie b 1918 Thanks for any imput & suggestions, Bob Foran - Marlborough, CT email: cordy11@comcast.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
