DNA Project: Family W116 John Wells was born sometime around 1740. John came to Lincoln county around 1769 or 1770 and setttled in what is now the Dixon community near Kings Mountain. John was a loyal partiot who fought along with his friend and neighbor Col. Frederick Hambright. John's name appears as a signer of the Tryon Co. Declaration of Independence August 14, 1775 . An old log house that ws built by John during the Rev. War still stands today in Cleveland Co., North Carolina and is the oldest standing home in that county. It is presently occupied by members of the Stewart family, who bought the property from the sons of James Simpson Wells, the grandson of John Wells.

    3. I have seen John Wells II suggested as the son of Joseph & Charity Carrington Wells of Cane Creek, NC. Have you any clues as to the origins of the John II you mention who was in the Kings Mountain area?
