Lecky, 1950, 1977, 1993. Red clothcovered hardback with gilt printing, 6-1/2 x 9-1/4, one published states that it has 775 pages, while another lists 677 pages. This is another new book, still in the shrinkwrap that I had set back for myself, but I had an opportunity to see the original booklets (first put out in serial form on the 25 May 1950) and now know that my own people would not be in this magnificient book, so will offer it here. This is a massive collection of genealogical data on the early settlers who lived within the verge of the Tenmile Creek that traversed Greene and Washington Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. After 1750, the Tenmile Country became the place to settle or stop over in for the huge migration of Scotch-Irish, Germans, and a few English who extended the American settlement beyond the Alleghenies. "Migration to the Monongahela took place over three main routes: along the National Pike via Winchester, Virginia; through the Shenandoah Valley to the head of Cheat River and from there to the Monongahela; and along the Lincoln Highway to Ligonier, Pennsylvania and thence along Jacob's Creek to the Monongahela. >From the time of the Frencg and Indian War to the end of the 18th century, the tributaries of the Tenmile Creek would be inundated by pioneers - many of them German or Scotch-Irish, some of them spillovers from the great migration into Kentucky, and still other travellers and immigrants who passed through Baltimore en route to one of the great migration trails." This book is just filled with genealogical data, genealogical family sketches-some going on for a number of generations, lists of those who served in the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War militia companies that were the only protection in this yet untamed and still very unsafe area that became Greene, Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette and nearby counties of present day Southwestern Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia, present day West Virginia, Western Maryland and eastern Ohio. You will find many families from Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and even the Carolinas. There are well over 500 family histories of varying length that take the lines both earlier and on down. The genealogical sketches cover or touch on more than 2,000 main families who settled in the Upper Monogahela area. There are maps, illustrations, facsimilies to enhance the book, along with an index, and the first part of the book is a wonderful history of the area. While this book tends to go out of print about as often as it is in print, one publisher no longer carries it in hardback form and they want $57.50 plus postage for their paperback copies! Although I can't give you all of the names in the book, I can supply some: Swan, Hughes, Evans, Lucas, Foster, Vanmeter, Strode, McNeill, Brandenburg, Green, Ventrees, Fairleigh, Hart, Rollins, Hiller, Bell, Bowen, Ward, DeLong, Burge, Brock, Burson, Hughes, Lucas, Shroyer, Garrison, Hufty, Deeming, Neff, Emery, Litzenberg, Foster, Garret, Barnhart, Neel, Seaton, Vorhees, Collier, Crawford, Inghram, Adams, Martin, Barry, Rawls, Anderson, Barclay, Darrah, Hempstead, Hague, Houlsworth, Rex, Wiltner, McGilkin, Cannon, Ayers, Collins, Blackledge, Lindsey, Brown, Armstrong, Curry, Stephenson, Fuller, Davidson, Patterson, Hewitt, Bomar, Gordon, Richey, McCullough, Flenniken, Vaneman, McClain, Doughty, Hook, Berryhill, Smith, Marquis, Welsh, Booze, Sellars, Murdock, Clawson, Gabes, Davidson, Denny, Dumwoodie, Hartman, Gregg, Hibbs, Carter, Barton, Phillips, McMullen, Boyd, Jennings, Seaton, Prickett, Alfree, Soefel, Sharpnack, Woodcock, Crago, Walton, Lucas, Kincaid, Clark, Kline, Virgin, Hill, McClain, Roseberry, Williams, Vansickles, Vaun, Asbury, Price, Veatch, Lawless, Craig, Singleton, Neal, Moore, Isaacs, Hourighan, Scott, McCarty, Price, Cunningham, Haydon, McClenahan, Shanklin, Morrison, Morris, Cleveland, Belt, Harrod, Stephens, Roseberry, Yoders, Ammons, Thomas, Lantz, Cooper, Francis Johnson, Kelly, Thurman, McElroy, Reynolds, Luse, Mashie, McClain, Hewitt, O'Neil, Maulding, Willis, Staley, Ailes, Young, Deum, Nutt, Hill, Rice, Mt. Insurance would be $1.35 extra, if desired. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
