My great-grandmother was Margaret Ann Wells Long and she and my great- grandfather, James Kent Freeman, were married in Navasota, Tx., which, I understand, is Grimes County. I have not been able to find any information on her beyond the wedding announcement I have, dated August, 1898. I called the Clerk of the Circuit Court to confirm the marriage, and they could not find a record of it and I cannot read the name of the clergy that married them. I am at a dead-end with her. Would the name happen to sound familiar? Maybe she had family in the area? She was born in Jackson Co, FL. They later moved to Houston, where she lived until her death in 1925. ----- Original Message ----- From: WELLS-D-request@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, February 28, 2006 5:35 pm Subject: WELLS-D Digest V06 #47 To: WELLS-D@rootsweb.com > WELLS-D Digest Volume 06 : Issue 47 > > Today's Topics: > #1 Re: [WELLS-L] Wells in Grimes Co. I see part of your problem. It appears they are not easy to find in the census records. In the 1920 census they are in Harris Co., Texas in Precinct 84/Justice Precinct 7 at Dwelling 98 on East Montgomery Road. This is page 9 at Ancestry.com but the index shows them on page 11. So the indexers were not perfect which is a foot note for those using the indexes. They are not only not always accurate but they corrupt the names and totally miss people sometimes. So if you don't find what you are looking for but are sure the people should be there, you may have to resort to looking page by page in the area of interest. In 1920 the following record appears: James K. Freeman 63 b: NY parents born NY and Canada - carpenter working for a house builder Margaret Freeman 51 b: Florida parents born Florida James K. Freeman, Jr. 19 b: TX Esther Freeman 15 b: TX E. Ruth Freeman 12 b: TX in 1900 they were in "Houston City", Harris Co., TX at 1610 Chesnut Street Jas K. Freeman b: Dec 1866 "Eng Canada" parents born NY and Canada Maggie A. Freeman b: Feb 1869 Florida - parents born Ireland and North Carolina Margaret E. Freeman b: June 1899 Texas (notice the inconsistency for birth places between the two census records. Not all that unusual unfortunately) I can not easily find them in the 1910 census. Now I have a question. Your great-grandmother is shown by you as Margaret Ann Wells Long. What was her maiden name - Wells or Long? I am suspecting that she might have actually been married before James Freeman. Is that correct? If so I see no evidence of children by the previous marriage in 1900. So far I have not found her in the 1870 or 1880 census. There is one Maggie Wells born Cir 1870 in the 1880 census in Jacksonville, Duval Co., Florida but s At 06:47 PM 3/6/2006, JRAWLEY@tampabay.rr.com wrote: >My great-grandmother was Margaret Ann Wells Long and she and my great- >grandfather, James Kent Freeman, were married in Navasota, Tx., which, >I understand, is Grimes County.
