His 1880 census listing says his parents were born in SC. However, a family member, probably one of his children, told a newspaper reporter in about 1910 that Jeremiah was a "native" of Virginia. I am inclined to interpret all this as meaning that the line was from Virginia but moved to SC then into Georgia, and perhaps moved back and forth. My guess is that the Wellses came from the counties along the NC/VA border, but it's just a guess.
