The first time he enlisted, he enlisted as Henry J. Clapp. He said it was because when he was still very young, his father died and his mother married John Clapp. She insisted he use that surname. Sometime during the War, John Clapp died. Henry reenlisted and this time he used his lawful name of Wells. Lillian and her husband, Roy, both died during the influenza pandemic of 1918. They died one day apart. Their son, Wesley, also had influenza, but survived. He was raised by his uncle, Edwin Askwig, in Oakland, Burt, NE.
