I am told my grandfather and his relatives lived on his farm. He raised Strawberries, I know for sure and other crops. My grandfather, Walter Mathews (Mathis) was born in the area of Teachey, Rose Hill. Before he married he started using Mathis as his surname, don't know why. Later he went to work for John L. Roper Lumber Company in NC. His mother, Laura b. 1875, her sisters, Rhody and Matilda (aunt Matt) resided in the area until they died. My grandfather, Walter Mathews (Mathis)b. 1896 married Lottie Estelle Mclamb b. 1899 from Sampson County and they moved back to Duplin County where the first child was born. Then they moved to Wayne County. But its my understanding that he always went back to visit. Walter's mother died when he and his sister, Hattie b. 1895 were about 4 or 5 years old and their Aunts: Rhody and Matt raised both of them. Has anyone heard of this Wells Farm. I trying to gather information about my grandfather and his sister's childhood. But she died at age 30. I am looking for her children by husband, Abraham Bowen who also worked for the Wells family, also. Thanks, if anyone knowa of this family farm. please let me know. Alice West Ferguson gr dau of Walter and Lottie (Mclamb) Mathis Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
