One small correction. The y-chromosome is NOT passed on the to daughters. Instead a second (half) "X" chromosome is passed on from father to the daughter. It is generally not of much use in DNA testing for genealogical purposes. The X Chromosome in all but the males, as with all autosomnal chromosomes (everything but the mtDNA from the mothers and y-chromosome from the father to the son), consists of two halves Half comes from the father and half from the mother. And the markers on these chromosomes are "diluted" every generation which is why it is so difficult to follow the dna back up the tree unless there is something very unique that shows in later generations and is traceable to a specific ancestor.
