I believe I may have located my great great grandfather. I found the marriage of John W. Wells to Martha Anne Hickson in Warren County, Mississippi in 1819. I don't know which is correct though. I found two instances of this marriage. One is listed as 7 March and the other as 17 March, 1819. Is anyone on the list researching this marriage? My basis for believing this is the correct couple is based upon information that my grandfather, John Thomas Wells, was born in 1870 in Marysville, Marshall County, KS. The person I located that I believe is my grandfather is listed as Thomas in the 1880 census, in which the original indexes were for families that had children age 10 and younger. Tracing this Thomas back to 1870, I find he has a brother named Pendlton Wells. My father's full name was George Pennelton Wells. Also possible clues are that the father of Thomas Wells, b. 1870 Marysville, Marshall, KS shows in the census as H. P. Wells. Further, I located a Hickman Pendleton Wells married to a Martha Scott. Following this marriage brings me to the same H.P. Wells in Marysville, KS. In 1880 he is listed as a Probate Judge. I eventually received a mini bio of Judge H. P. Wells, which indicated he was born in Adams County, MS in 1829. The biography states that H.P.'s mother was of the Hicksons of South Carolina. Consequently, when I located this marriage in a Mississippi database of Mississippi marriages, I am leaning toward believing that this Wells/Hickson could very well be my great great grandparents. Anyone researching this line? I would dearly love to connect with you. So far, I have found no one researching this line of Wells. HELP!!!!! Thanks. Denise
The marriage is probably either a typo in translation or it could be the marriage license/bond. I would contact the County Clerk there and give them the dates, they can tell you which is correct. Re: census, look at the original and see if it could be T P Wells ... transcribers were not always accurate .. and the enumerators were also not always that literate. I recently found a census for a woman who's name was "Anne B" and the census was "Amilie" ... phonetically he was close.
