My father told my that my ancestor, Caleb Wells, built the first covered bridge and eddy there but the bridge was later swept away by the Susquehanna. I saw the site and the town as a little girl. He told us that the bridge had been replaced by the State of NY. Wells Bridge, NY had a bicentennial and it was recorded on the internet. The site said that Caleb Wells was from Connecticut. This was related by the Oneonta Star newspaper. I found a few facts about him. He had several brothers, one named William. There is more on my ancestry website.
