Have you had your DNA tested? Given your research you would be a good candidate. And I suspect you have had contact with a lot of other Atwell/Attwell researchers. Given the likely interconnection between Wells and Attwell/Atwell I would suggest we pull you folks into the Wells project where we have a resource of something like 600 who have been tested although we have not gotten all of them to enter our project. I see only two Attwell/Atwell folks who were tested at Sorenson and maybe 10 at Family Tree DNA plus one at Ancestry, so there is probably a large untapped resource out there. Contact me directly if you are interested in taking the DNA test through our project. orinwells@wells.org Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BillAttwell Surnames: Attwell, atte Welle, Welles, Wells Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5522.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi I've been researching the At(t)well family in the UK for 30 years and can trace many hundreds of relations back 24 generations to 1290. My researches between 1200 and 1500 reveal hundreds of instances where the names Atwell/ atte Welle and Wells/Welles are all used interchangeably. The same individuals regularly recorded themselves as "Wells alias Atwell" or "Atwell alias Wells". Some individuals within a family adopted the name Atwell, whilst their siblings chose to use Welles. It is also true that some Welles families had absolutely no connection with the Atwells and vice versa, but I am confident that by 1600 a large proportion were inter-related. Many members of the Atwell/Welles branches I researched moved away and settled in numerous counties during the period 1200-1500. Since then, others have crossed the Atlantic. I have no doubt a widespread DNA test will prove the connection between the Atwells and Wells, but I suspect it would probably need to cover dozens of seemingly unrelated individuals both in the UK and USA to do so. Nevertheless, it's an excellent project to undertake. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Leslie85223 Surnames: WELLS, WELCH, VERMILLION, MARSHALL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/4745.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Kevin: It's always a pleasure to meet another "cousin"!! William Legrand Wells I believe was the first child born to James and Charlotte. I have only an approximate date of birth for William's wife, Margaret Marshall <1827> WV. Date of birth for William is 12/13/1827 - does this agree with your data? Children born to William & Margaret were Eliza J <1849>, West Virginia <5/25/1863>, Ida Bell<8/8/1866>, James <1870> and Emma <1874>. As you can see, my information on Williams family is very limited. If you can fill me in I'd be ever so pleased!!! Earlier this year, when I had a paid membership with Ancestry, I received information that James had served in the Civil War. I'm still recovering (physically and financially)from a medical incident that occurred in January so have not been able to order a copy of James CW file. I'm in hopes that some information related to James and Charlotte might be included in those files . . . Forgive my stupidity, but is Bellaire in OH? I NEVER assume!!! Tracking my Wells Ancestor, Albert Jefferson Wells, via census reports has been challenging because he often used the name of "Jeff", "Al" and "Albert" along with the name of Welch!!! I'm now begining to think the idea of the name change may have been that of his wife, Lucretia, but since there is nothing left of any family data I'm just guessing. The information I was able to put together all came from his Civil War files. According to those files in statements made by my ancestor he added two children to the family that had not been included in previous statements. In all of the legal documents he used the name of Wells but these two children, now a part of his family, were listed as Welch children (a boy and a girl) . . . I do have a photo of the wife and some of the children of Thomas Van Buren Wells. Lucinda Purdum Vermillion gave birth to 10 children that I know of. Thomas died in 1899 but Lucinda lived on until 1942. With all those children, each having large families of their own, I'd hoped to have had more of a response related to this research. How about you? Look forward to hearing from you again soon. Leslie (AZ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
