    3. I didn't think that I had seen this Wells family before or at least I had not seen the ancestry. But I did a quick google search for Andrew Elton Wells and learned that there are quite a lot of references to him - about 727 - including his will and some posts on this list in 2000 and several in 2008 although I don't know if any were from descendants or any of them were named Wells. If you haven't just done a search and checked all of these out, you might want to do so. There was a suggestion that this Wells family might have been connected to the W006 family, but it sounds like Andrew Elton Wells was unlikely to be descended from the same family. One reference shows he was the master of the ship "Brigantine Margaret" in 1765" - a slave vessel working St. Christophers. Since this is another immigrant Wells family I would be very interested to see the DNA for someone from the family. Given your subject line I am going to guess you too are looking for cousins who carry the Wells name and DNA. Hope you are successful. Several of the google hits mention that he was the brother-in-law of Samuel Adams. That reference is to a book and papers about Samuel Adams and mentions numerous letters had been exchanged between the two men. I have to wonder if the letters are still in existence - at least the ones from Andrew. I also recall a reference to Samuel Adams in the past but I don't recall the context. I don't remember it being Andrew Elton Wells however. But it could be. I will have to search for that. Sarah Jane's 2nd husband was Ansel Skeels born <1824> NY and he and Sarah were parents to daughter Ida Belle born in 1872. She'd have been 13 years old in 1885 but was not included in the census report . . . had died perhaps? Charlotte has been giving all of her descendants fits for years, so at the very least you're in sympathetic company (even if you don't solve your mystery). You will find Charlotte Wells, with her daughter and son-in-law Sarah Jane (listed as S.J.) and Ansel Skeels, in the 1885 Kansas State Census, Town of Republic, Lincoln County, on page 14, family 83. If you wish, you can also find Charlotte in 1880 in the household of her son William L Wells and family (my 3x great grandfather), in Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio. They're on p. 286, family # 217. She is very consistent about her place of birth in every census as being Maryland. But that's about all we know about her. I hope this helps! Good luck with your search! I have not replied because I am not sure this is the Charlotte Wells I have been looking for. After looking over the messages and responses from others, it is still possible this is the Charlotte I am seeking. I do not have a membership to Ancestry, so I could not view the image of the census that you posted. Can you give me a town and/or page number so I can see if I can find it on 'Heritage Quest'? I have a John Wells that died in 1845. His children say he was born in either MD, or SC. His wife's name is Nancy (unknown). Nancy was living with several children in 1860s. They are not her children, or if they are, they are all illigitimate. I think they belonged to one of her daughters or a son. Anyway, in her probate of 1870s, she mentioned a Charlotte Wells several times. No hint who Charlotte is, or where she lives. But there is no Charlotte Wells anywhere to be found in that area of S.Carolina. I believe Nancy's probate was in Chester or Fairfield County in S.Carolina. John & Nancy could have had a son named James, or William because both names are carried throughout many of the children's lines. I know that doesn't mean much, since it is such a common name. But, I have hunted for Charlotte Wells for years. If James died in 1860, he would not have been mentioned in the probate, but if the widow was still alive, she would have been. So, if you don't mind, could you let me know the page number and town of the census, so I can study that to see if there might be a connection. Thanks so much, Kathy Wells. I recognize several of the posters in this thread from researching over the years. Having had a series of massive computer crashes over the years, I've lost all my email correspondence, but I know that I've communicated with at least Linda and Leslie in the past. Just the other day, I found Charlotte, still alive in 1885 and living with her daughter Sarah Jane (Wells) and her second husband Anson Skeels, in Republic, Lincoln, Kansas. They are listed in the state census, now posted online here at ancestry. The image can be viewed here: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=1088&iid=ks1885_114-0631&fn=Charlotte&ln=Wells&st=r&ssrc=&pid=876604 She's 80 years old, and shockingly far from Belmont County Ohio, where she was living in 1880. I'm now thinking she died out there with daughter Sarah, and was buried back home in Ohio. I wrote to the Kansas State Historical Society, and they stunned and disappointed me by responding with a death date from somebody's family tree on ancestry.com. I'd hoped for something more... er... local. I wonder whether there were any papers publishing there in 1887. Speaking of 1887 -- that comes from somebody's family tree online. There are now hard dates for Charlotte's birth and death, but I can't figure out how they're sourced. Can anybody figure this out? http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/editperson.aspx?pid=115782270&st=1 They did tell me her daughter Sarah Jane Skeels died 8 Jan 1912. Since KS began keeping vitals in July 1911, there's a chance that Sarah's death record will contain her mother's maiden name. Hard to know. I haven't sent for it, been working recently on a different branch of the family altogether. Hope you've all been well. -Daryl Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
