Author: bhillmer Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5527.5.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lynn: Great ... your first step is the DNA ... did you join the DNAAncestry.com WELLS Group? It will compare your Dad's DNA to all the 625 members. Most are part of the Wells Surname DNA study http://www.wells.org of which Orin Wells is the coordinator. Send him a copy of the DNA results and send me a gedcom or the Wells descendants from John b: 1790 in GA. Orin will assign you an ID and give you the associated WELLS family that you belong to based on your Dad's DNA results. I will put your data into the Merge database which has a majority of the DNA participant's lineage ... and some that could not find a 'living Wells male' to do the test. Once you get the DNA Family, you can contact the other researchers by clicking on the ID number in the spreadsheets Orin has on the wells.org website under Project Status ... just click on NEXT until you find the sheet that has your DNA family. Then click on the ID number and you can send a message to the researcher associated with that test. You can also use the Family and ID number to search the Merge for any connection. orinwells@wells.org ... ladybonita@usa.com ... for gedcom/lineage Bonita Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been looking for ages for her picture. I am in contact with Aunt Bessie's granddaughter and she didn't have the picture. And so grateful that you visited my grandmother's grave. I haven't been able to. I will write to the cemetery office. I have Laura's death certificate but no one had the obit. What is your mother's name? I have been in contact with some of Aunt Nancy's grandchildren. Loved Aunt Nancy. What is the name of your Family Tree? Mine is Howell Mattie Moore Vining. His great-grandfather John M. Wells was born in 1830 in Autauga County, Alabama, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery here in Paris. If there are relatives from North Carolina, I haven't found them yet, as I'm still stuck on John M.'s father John, born in Wilkes County, GA in 1790. My husband submitted DNA to ancestry.com, but I'm not clear about exactly what I'm supposed to do with it at this point. It was posted by my son. I got the picture from another Vining descendant Bessie Patton, now deceased. I visited Anna Laura Vining's grave at the Forest Hill cem. in Memphis many years ago (1970s). The cem. office had an obit from the local newspaper in Laura's file. I don't have a copy for their copying machine was out of order. I imagine the obit is still available if you write. Her grave was near the back of the cem. near a chain link fence as I remember. My grandmother Nancy Anna Vining Fallin Hodges was your Laura's sister. She and my Mother may have visited Laura's grave in the thirties. Jim Hayes Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: vickicox60 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5568/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for ANY information about my ancestor John J. Wells born 1795 and living in Estill County Kentucky around 1840-1870 per census. If you are a direct male descendant of John J Wells (his middle name may be Judy and his wife is Jeannette - dont know her maiden name) and would be willing to enter the Wells DNA study, I will pay for the study if you will have the test run. John J Wells is my 4th great grandfather - but lineage through to my mother from him is all through the female side. I am trying to determine if John J Wells is related to any of the Wells family on my father's mother's side (Edmond B Wells-Morgan County) or my father's father's side (Richard Wells and Sarah Smith Wells - Menifee County). As you can see, I am a Wells through and through! Thank you for any information you might have. PLEASE HELP. 1. [WELLS] The Caleb (->Phillip->Thomas Jefferson) Wells Dilemma
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ChadThompson4420 Surnames: Wells Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.wells/5567/mb.ashx Message Board Post: To all: I originally posted a message to the malling list, but with all of the 'RootsWeb Gateway' messages it seems that more people would see the note if I posted it on the message board. So here is a repost of something I sent to the mailing list, with a hope that someone might have a bit of insight into this particular line of the Wells Family. Thanks! --- I've been attempting some internet searching on the Wells family - after discovering a part of my wife's family history Ancestry.com made this seem 'easy'... but it turns out that none of this really is that easy. I've been searching through the mailing list archives as well, but my problem is apparently one that has been a matter of some debate. I'm writing to ask if any progress has been made on the debate or if there is some real documentation behind the published resources. My wife's family contains a Wells connection from her grandmother Irene (Wells) Gardiner and her great-grandfather Fred Albert Wells. (The family is/was largely from the Milo, IA area.) From what we know firmly, Fred Albert is the son of Thomas Jefferson Wells, a Civil War veteran with service in the 5th Wisconsin Battalion. TJ Wells was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic in the Milo, IA post according to records I have found. This family tree appears in the "Merged DNA" website/family tree under the W010 family branch. (Here's the link I found: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hillmer/DNA/ui21.htm#a810 ) According to this tree, TJ Wells is the son of Phillip Wells and Nancy Tanner; Phillip is in turn the son of Caleb Wells and Rosanna Peterson, Caleb is in turn the son of Lt. James Wells and Freelove Aylesworth. Some Ancestry.com members have also agreed with this line, others have not. There is a problem on relying on Ancestry.com for information: there are many claims, but often not much in the way of documented evidence. Searching through the list archives here, it seems that there has been some debate on the ancestry of the Phillip->Caleb->James line. In some of the posts I've found here there was a bit of a debate about the ancestry (or even identity) of the "Caleb" that was both the son of Lt. James as well as the father of Phillip. Does anyone have some insight beyond what I've found online, or some proof of the Phillip->Caleb->James ancestry? Thank you in advance for any insight anyone can provide!
