I participated in the Genographic Project with National Geographic at https://www5.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/. It is very interesting that the males in my family branch descend from the M201 lineage, referred to as haplogroup G, and which is rarely present in population frequencies at greater than a few percent. The line "first appeared in northern India's Indus Valley, on the M89 lineage, and subsequently dispersed during the past 10,000 to 20,000 years." "Currently, little else is known of haplogroup G's origin or history. Learning more about such unusual lineages is a primary goal of the Genographic Project." I was wondering if any other Wells families have participated in this project. And if so, what the results have been. Raymond R. Wells ID #186 Family w016d Branch w122
Raymond, I am glad to see someone in the Wells project has tried the National Geographic Project that Dr. Spencer Wells is running. By implication your test will cover anyone connected to the W006 family (W016, W020, W028 and W060). What exactly were the results you were provided? I have not see them nor do I know what they are testing beyond the initial 12 y-Chromosome markers. Can you share with us some of the information you got out of the project so we can get some hint as to whether it would be of any value for others to pay the $100 participation fee? I do know that your family's haplotype was so unique that when I presented it to the group on the Genealogy-DNA list they were stumped trying to attach a haplogroup to it. We have a few others like that. It might be interesting to have one participant from each family submit a sample to this project to see what the results are and thus the rest of the family will know without everyone having to contribute. We do not know, of course, where your ancestor came from. It has been assumed it was the UK in the late 1600s. But your Haplogroup match really has to make us wonder what it might mean. One has to wonder how it is that a haplogroup identified with India came to be represented in the UK and then the US? The UK to US link is pretty easy to see. But India to the UK pre 1600? None of this helps with the Genealogy, of course, but it is interesting. Tom, in answer to your query, I would like to interject my thoughts on this. In this generation of identity theft....the more info put out on living people jeopardizes their safety. The living can add their info later, but it is my opinion that choice should be theirs. We have enough research to do on past generations...let's leave the now generation to them....just my opinion....Carolann On Tue, 20 Sep 2005 02:46:55 EDT OoliticIN@aol.com writes: > Hi Bonita, > May I ask why the "only for people born before 1901" in the DNA > merge? > That was a 104 years ago. > Tom Evans > > In a message dated 9/19/05 5:00:51 AM, WELLS-D-request@rootsweb.com > writes: > > > > If you have a genealogy of the family, I know that I do not have a > copy and > > would love to include it (only for people born before 1901) in the > DNA merge > > project. > > > > Bonita > > > > > > ==== WELLS Mailing List ==== > To search Archives of list go to: > http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > and enter list name > > >

I think I have the long-lost Henry/Harry Wells whose parents were Asahel Wells and Nancy Holden of Windham, VT. He was hiding from me in Michigan. Family Bible says he was born 24 Jan 1810 so this fellow looks plausible. Anybody descended from him? In 1850 census of Prairieville Twp., Barry Co., MI: Henry Wells, 40, carpentger, $500, NY Sarah Wells, 38, NY Alina or Alvina I. Wells, 14, NY Ellen H. Wells, 11, Michigan Charlotte S., 8, Michigan Miron (Myron) H. Wells, Michigan George G. Wells, 8/12, Michigan Same place, 1860, they have added son Charles, 6, daughter Ellen Honeywell, 21, is back home, and William Matthews, 73, NY, blind, was living with them. I thought at first William was Sarah's father, but in 1880 we learn that her father was born in CT and her mother in NY. In 1870 they were enumerated in Gilmore Twp., Benzie Co., MI; and in 1880 in Arcadia, Manistee, MI. They must have died before 1900. I would like to seek a will but so far can't find them dying in Manistee Co. The Michigan death index is not complete enough, only 5 counties. So far I have tentatively given spouses to three children: Ellen m. David Honeywell and two of their children were born in Iowa, but they came back to Michigan. Charlotte m. a first cousin, Asahel Nelson Wells, and moved to Floyd Co., Indiana, had 4 children and divorced. Myron m. Sybil ____ and moved to DeKalb Co., AL and had 10 children, with 5 living in 1900. Any help appreciated. Margie in Calif.

Tom: There were three reasons for excluding any WELLS born after 1900: 1) most researchers have traced their roots back to someone who was born before 1900 ... so it there is going to be a connection with an unknown researcher, you should be able to find it in the 'before 1901 group". 2) with the longevity of people's lives now (both of my maternal grandparents lived to be 100 -- actually grandpa was 104 when he passed), so there was always a chance that rather than not knowing when they died that they were actually still living. I did not want to take a chance to have anyone living in the database. 3) many of the gedcoms excluded information for living people so I was not sure if there was no birth date because they were living or if they did not know when they were born. With an index of approximately 30,000 Wells individuals, some sort of birth date was going to be necessary to differentiate all the 'John Wells' from each other .. a timeframe was essential. I did estimate birth year where I could using the 20 year rule (kind of). I hope this helps Bonita \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ----oOOo-(_)-oOOo---- Just Looking ... Hi Bonita, May I ask why the "only for people born before 1901" in the DNA merge? That was a 104 years ago. My ancestor Israel Wells, b. 1757 in CT, came with his wife and family to Licking Co. ca 1805 as part of a large company of residents from Granby, CT and Granville, MA who formed the town of Granville in Licking Co. I am not aware of any branches of my particular line that were ever in VA, so it looks like they are not the same family. Sorry, and best of luck! Tim Dawe Dayton, OH
