    1. The Mysterious Death of William Jennings Wells
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wells, Skelton Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SCWBAIB/4336 Message Board Post: My maternal Grandfather was William Jennings Wells ( 1898 -1937 ). He was supposedly the son of John T. Wells, and his 2nd wife, Mary Skelton, and was born in Indiana. I say supposedly, but THAT'S a whole 'nother mystery! Mary's maiden name was Hesson, 1st husband a John West, 2nd husband an Elijah Melvin Skelton, and 4th husband a William Fields. ;-D John's 1st wife is unknown to me, but their children were Charles and Muriel. John, and Mary may have also had a daughter named Blanche, after their marriage, when ever that was ( 1900-05 ). Anyway, on my Blog, this morning, I have posted a series about William's death. It includes a wonderful photo from the 1930's, of him, and my Grandmother, the newspaper coverage of his death, and its aftermath, the memories of my Uncle Paul ( He was 4 years old at the time ), and my list of questions about the death, its aftermath, the death certificate, and the newspaper coverage. It encompasses 4 posts, so just follow the links at the end of the 1st 3: http://www.sneakeasysjoint.com/sneakeasy/2005/10/the_strange_dea.html Any thoughts, suggestions, leads, on anyhting related to ol' Willie & John, would be appreciated. -- MR. However, I have no record of his marriage to Rindy Culbertson! He was born in Bath County, KY, in 1828. His parents were Richard and Sarah (Smith) Wells. He married Marinda Shrout after the Civil War. After the death of Richard Wells, they migrated to Marshall County, KS. Their children were Perry Thomas Wells, Sarah Jane Wells Dennis, Issac Wells, Thomas Richard Wells (my paternal grandfather), Henry Lewis & Jackson Ewing Wells (twins), Mary Elizabeth Wells, John Morgan Wells and Alice Belle Wells. They are all buried in Marshall County, KS in the Wells Family Cemetery or Antoich Cemetery. I did participate in the DNA Study which showed I was descended from James and Marinda Wells. I would be happy to supply more info to you. James Wells died in Bigelow, KS, in 1901. Marinda Wells died in 1922. I knew most of their children very well, and my father was quite devoted to his aunts and uncles. Only Thomas Richard Wells (married to Sophia Flore! nce Griffis, in 1897) and Sarah Jane (Sally) Wells Dennis were married. I am the only male descendent of James Wells bearing the surname of Wells. My father was Richard Clinton Wells, 1903-1975, my mother was Bess May (Swenson) Wells, 1909-1982. I am Richard Clinton Wells, II, born in 1944 in Manhattan, Riley County, KS. I now reside in the Los Angeles area of CA. I have seen one other source mentioning a Rindy Culbertson, but, according to my great aunt, Mary Elizabeth Wells, "Rindy" was nickname for her mother Marinda Wells! I hope to hear from you. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SCWBAIB/4313.1 Message Board Post: Alex, The only information I can provide at this time comes from "William Wells of Southold and His Descendants A. D. 1638 to 1878" by Charles Wells Hayes and published in 1878. On pages 27- 28; " He (William) married second, probably about 1654, Mary, or "Marie," as she herself wrote it, whose family name is said to be Youngs. The date of the marriage I infer from the fact that his oldest daughter, Bethia, must have been born about 1655, and was, in all probability, the child of this second wife; and also from the order of the General Court quoted above (1654), which seems likely to have some connection with the second marriage as well as the decease of the first wife. It is much more difficult to ascertain the value of the tradition which calls the second wife Mary "Youngs." Thus far I have found nothing to throw any light on the question of her family." Then a footnote which reads: "She can hardly have been Mary, the sister of the Rev. John Youngs, (who according to Savage (I. 277) is said to have married Wm. Brown, of Salem, and died 1636,) or his daughter Mary, who was born 1631, and probably married Edward Petty, of Southold. The tradition may have arisen from the fact that William Wells' daughter mary became Youngs by marriage. It comes to me from the family of Capt. Benj. Wells of Southold, a source entitled to much respect,-but how ancient and well founded it is I do not know." Hayes also writes that she remarried after William Wells' death a "Goodman Mapes." While I can't (yet) tell you who her parents were I can tell you who they weren't. Perhaps a study of the Mapes line would help. I'm curious to know how you came across her date of death if you'd share. Hopefully within a month I'll finish and submit what I've gathered (mostly from Hayes fine book, written 127 years closer to the story). I have over 3,000 names already. What I'm recommending to everyone is to get involved with the numerous DNA studies being conducted. Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is a good place to try. They are free and, from what I can see, have the greatest number of participants. The more folks who contribute DNA (a harmless mouthwash is all it takes) the more truth we can all uncover. They have a website. Good luck.
