    1. Don't need a gedcom to submit Wells data for merge -- also taking maternal WELLS lines
    2. Lady Bonita (USA)
    3. First, I want to thank all the people who have rushed to my aid by resending their gedcoms, backups of their genealogy software and emails between us with documents (I had sent with updates I had added to their lines), etc. ... it has been very helpful. I just wish I had sent a copy of my status spreadsheet to someone that had all the IDs, Family ID and email addresses. I wanted to clarify a couple things: 1) my software (TMG) will convert a backup of almost any genealogy software to my database. So, if you don't want to send a gedcom, just send me a copy of your latest genealogy software backup files. I do realize that the backup will contain all of the surnames, not just WELLS. I will extract ONLY what I need . eliminating all persons born after 1900 . so don't worry about privacy. 2) as I originally agreed, I am accepting 'maternal' WELLS lines again. Just because I goofed should not cause any of you not to get what I promised. The non-tested WELLS lines will be bounced against the tested lines to see if there is a connection to a specific line. This will never replace finding that 'living WELLS male' and having the test run for your specific 'root' of the family tree. Many have found that they were not connected to the line they had been researching either to a bad assumption, bad information from another source, or mixing up two men from the same area with the same given name. If you have not sent your genealogy data yet, please do so as soon as possible so I can get back on track. Bonita Hillmer Arizona, USA http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hillmer/DNA/ Wells DNA Families W001, W002, W003, W004, W005, W007 and W037 were uploaded so they can be viewed there. The remaining DNA families with multiple people contributing, the 'maternal lines' and 'research but no connection' were all ready to be uploaded when my computer decided to throw up it's speakers and croak.

    2. Lady Bonita (USA)
    3. I have tried both and every time I signed up for Genealogy.com within a week, I cancelled it. It is because of the search program. You must know the exact spelling (no soundex) and you must always have a first name. Ancestry.com allows you to search by soundex AND by partial name. You must provide the first three characters at a minimum. When I search for WELLS I input: WEL*S, then WIL*S This usually picks up every spelling variation. Soundex picks up too many other names. The first name is the same as well ... but, you can also leave it blank and fill in a specific residence or birth location ... or age ... or a range on the year of birth. It just has more options. My Ancestry.com subscription is for the census, family records, vital records. I do not have the submitted lineages or newspapers. The lineages are really usually also found on Rootsweb.com if you really want them. I do believe that Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com are both NOW owned by the same company. I did see a recent special on Ancestry.com for $186 which is much cheaper than each separately. -----Original Message----- From: Catherine Mensi [mailto:cmensi@midsouth.rr.com] Sent: Monday, October 31, 2005 6:03 PM To: WELLS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WELLS-L] Ancestry.com vs. Genealogy. com Can anyone give me some feedback on these two programs (I am getting tired of sitting at the library in line for a PC with free connections)? 3. Catherine, I subscribe to both programs, too, and it's hard for me to decide which I like better. They are expensive but I have access to them 24 hours per day and I do spend a lot of time using them. Genealogy.com's census images are sometimes better and they do have most years indexed. Sometimes I find what I'm looking for at Ancestry.com and if the image isn't good, I'll go to Genealogy.com. If that year isn't indexed, I write down the page number and look it up that way. Sometimes I've been able to find a census record on one that I can't find on the other. Anyway, I'd hate to have to give up either one. Not much help here, either, is there? 2. Ancestry.com is free if you use the computers at your local LDS History Center. To find one near you, contact one of their churches or go on www.FamilySearch.org to find the closest to you. They are open to the public. Each might have different hours. The one closest to me is open 7 days a week 9-9 except Sunday and then it is open in the afternoons. Carolann

Thanks! > >[Catherine Wells Mensi] > > >==== WELLS Mailing List ==== > Join Rootsweb > http://www.rootsweb.com > > > > > Catherine, Both of these programs are great for the genealogist interested in serious research...i say serious, because they are very expensive to purchase a subscription to.So, if you want to spend about $200.00 a year to buy the top end program, it is well worth it, but youbetter be willing to spend a great deal of time using their stuff if you want to justify the cost, at least that is my thinking. For my purposes, i decided i did not need the total package, so i just subscribe to the US. Census Collection, the American records collection and the One World Tree. They are about $40.00 each per year. I suggest that you subscribe to the magazine of Ancestry.com, called Family Tree, it is well worth the price (six issues yearly are about $25.00 or so) Any how, you have my perspective on Ancestry.com and since one parent company owns both it and Genealogy.com, the difference is probably negligible. I do think that for the price one should be able to access either program, but that has not come to pass yet. Frank

    3. Mary Beth was so sweet to provide directions again to create a GEDCOM from FTM v11 -----Original Message----- From: Mbmjlm22@aol.com [mailto:Mbmjlm22@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2005 2:20 PM To: ladybonita@usa.com; kwells48@earthlink.net Subject: Re: Need instructions for creating gedcom from FTM v11 To Export a Gedcom Gedcom simply means Genealogy Communication There are three types of gedcoms to export. 1: one will export everything in your family file to a new gedcom. 2: One will export only selected individuals that you designate. 3: other will export into a new gedcom every person included in an outline descendant file. In order to EXPORT EVERYTHING from your family file 1. Go to FILE A. EXPORT FILE a. Choose COPY/EXPORT FAMILY FILE This will bring up a large box with all your family tree files in case you have several as I do. At the bottom of the box you will find two boxes with drop down arrows. The first box says "file name". Skip that and go to the next drop down arrow to go to gedcom . You can also export your file to a particular Family Tree Maker version, but if you are exporting a file to someone who does not use Family Tree Maker you will need to choose gedcom. When you click on Gedcom the file name will automatically be named the file you are currently in. Click on save and then click OK. This will save your entire file as a gedcom. It will usually save in your FTM file unless you designate it somewhere else. If you want to EXPORT SELECTED individuals: 1. Go to FILE A. EXPORT FILE a. Choose SELECTED INDIVIDUALS Then click on the individuals you want to export and follow the sames steps as before. If you want to EXPORT ALL INDIVIDUALS FROM AN OUTLINE DESCENDANT TREE, choose the OLDEST ANCESTOR and create the OUTLINE DESCENDANT REPORT. 1. Go to FILE A. EXPORT FILE a. Export Individuals in the outline descendant tree or B. Export Outline Descendant Tree in Acrobat (this is the only option my program gives me-the other options for this, Plain Text and RTF are grayed out. I have not used this option. I don't know how it would work but the other option works fine. After you export you will follow the same steps as above and use gedcom and export your tree. Then you can just upload your new gedcom to where ever you want it. If you have questions, feel free to e mail me at mbmjlm22@aol.com
