Surnames: WELLS, SHAIBLE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SCWBAIB/1231.1461.1 Message Board Post: Does anyone connect with the following WELLS? From: History and Biography of Jackson County, Michigan, Pub. in Chicago: Inter-State Pub. Co., 1881 Pages 748 and 751 Charles WELLS, carriage-maker, was born in Berkeley County, Va., Sept. 4, 1830. When a small child his parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth WELLS, emigrated to Hocking County, Ohio, in 1831, took up Government land and made a farm, where he resided until his death, which occurred in 1869. The subject of this sketch apprenticed to a man by the name of Michael MOORE, and remained four years. He then worked as a "jour." and traveled over the Western States. In 1849 he crossed the plains to California, but his health failing, he returned to Ohio. In the spring of 1851 he came to Ann Arbor and followed his trade a short time. In 1861 he enlisted in the 16th Ohio Vol. Cav., Co. K, and served three years, was in all the engagements of the regiment up to the battle of Gettysburg, where he was injured by a cannon ball coming so close to his head that it knocked him down, and it was supposed a horse ran over him. After the war he came back to Ann Arbor and remained there until! 1878, then came to Jackson and has remained since. He married Miss Elizabeth SHAIBLE, a native of Germany; she was born in 1847. They have 1 child--Lada. In politics Mr. W. is a Republican. He may have been my gr grandfather.

    3. Just wanted to add to Orin's message, that you should send Orin and/or me copies of your Wells lineage so we will have the data incorporated into the Wells Study. Bonita -----Original Message----- From: OrinWells [mailto:orinwells@wells.org] Sent: Friday, January 20, 2006 3:38 PM To: WELLS-UK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Wells-UK] Wells DNA Study I will try to keep this short as my posts to other lists seem to have caused some confusion. I would like to recommend EVERYONE who can provide at least a 4 generation genealogy and has not done so already submit a sample to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Project. This is FREE and while a research project where they don't give participants the results, we can find them in the database. So we can include any Wells males in our Wells project who submit samples to Sorenson. Also, you will be helping the research to find ways of using DNA other than the y-chromosome for genealogical testing. Contact me for details on participating. We also can test male Wells through our project at Relative Genetics at $95 (US) for the 26 marker test or $135 for the 43 marker test. This is the best price we have seen and it won't last long. Again, contact me for information. The Wells DNA study results have been updated recently. I am working on bringing the family tables up to date. We have many more 43 marker results posted especially for those who participated in Phase I. Check them out here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wellsfam/dnaproje/results1.html Orin R. 1. Answer to one question on DNA
    2. OrinWells
    3. Last week the question was asked about using the maiden name or married name when submitting a sample to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Project. The answer is it does not matter. When the sample, consent form and genealogy are received, they are assigned a tracking number and the genealogy is tied to the sample when the results are complete. The name is not left in the mix. If the genealogy is consistent starting with the submitter it should all work. Keep in mind they do not post anyone born post 1900 in their database. From my observation this is a hard rule even if they can identify that a younger person is deceased. Orin R. Wells Wells Family Research Association P. O. The Marchant's must have had more boys because there are a ton of males with the Marchant name. Maybe the Marchant's could get past 1766. Anyway, I will let you know when I get the code so you can pass it to a male. Mary Beth Marchant

    3. If you want to find out if there is a DNA sample on file at Sorenson for a particular Surname try this. Go to http://smgf.org Click on "Search" at the right bottom of the page Click on "Search the Y-Chromosome data base" at the bottom of the next page (here is where you will eventually find the mtDNA data base) The next page should default to "Relative Genetics (after 29 June 2004). This is when they last changed their testing nomenclature. All the Wells samples now match this nomenclature. Check "Use Demonstration values instead" - it really does not matter in this case. At the bottom of the page select "Sort by surname (then by genetic match)" and enter the surname you are interested in. The page returned will show every sample currently in place of the 9,000 y-chromosome samples in the database. They will be doing another update sometime this month. They will make another update in March and quarterly. Sometime this year the mtDNA data should be in place. There are, in fact, two Marcharant samples in the database that appear to match each other. If you click on the little family tree symbol at the left of the sample row you can see a bit on the genealogy for the sample. The first starts with an Arthur Marchant b: 1881 Peoa, Summit Co., Utah and links up to a Richard Marchant b: abt 1620 in Of Stogursey, Somerset, England. This is obviously an LDS family that immigrated directly to Utah after the mid 1800s. The second is obviously from the exact same family - two brothers, a father and son or something like that. You could probably track this family down you searching FamilySearch.org for the ancestry and look to the submitter(s). There are also two Merchant entries that probably are quite different in values. One is for a Benjamin Merchant b: 14 Jun 1877 DeRuyter, New York with a father of the same name. The other is a Harry Edwards Merchant b: 22 Jul 1896 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. But it appears this was one of those non-paternal events or an adoption where they have actually identified when it happened. The father is shown as Daniel M. Edwards b: 26 Dec 1880 Woonsocket and his mother Ethel Harper b: 23 Aug 1879 Woonsocket. Given the ages (15 and 16 at conception) Harry was likely given up for adoption. The only way to find out if your Marchant boys match any of these or the samples that will come on-line over time is to get one of them tested and wait. At the cost of Free, how can you lose?
