DNA Project: Family W116 John Wells was born sometime around 1740. John came to Lincoln county around 1769 or 1770 and setttled in what is now the Dixon community near Kings Mountain. John was a loyal partiot who fought along with his friend and neighbor Col. Frederick Hambright. John's name appears as a signer of the Tryon Co. Declaration of Independence August 14, 1775 . An old log house that ws built by John during the Rev. War still stands today in Cleveland Co., North Carolina and is the oldest standing home in that county. It is presently occupied by members of the Stewart family, who bought the property from the sons of James Simpson Wells, the grandson of John Wells.

The "P" was written quite differently by this enumerator. If you were not aware, this family is descended from Zachariah Wells and Abigail Osborne of Lee/Wise County Virginia. This is family W020 in our Wells DNA study although I don't think we have tested a descendent of George Washington Wells. I know of one though.

In all 3 records she was referred to as Betty and not Elizabeth. 1. January 2, 1792 John Starling of Robeson gave to his son William his grist mill and all his lands on the Indian Swamp containing 4 tracts. Also a Negro woman named Bess, one yoke of oxen, six head of other cattle. He also gave 2 head of horses, one called Blue Tom and the other a Philly. Also, 40 head of hogs and 2 head of sheep, only reserving to his loving wife Betty the one half of the profits arising from his grist mill during her widowhood [Robeson Co. Deed Bk B p. 346]. 2. Item, I give & bequeath my daughter Betty Starling one ewe & lamb after her mother's death [Stephen Wells Will Edgecombe Co. NC as submitted to court in April 1775. 3. Hi, Bonita! I am getting nowhere! But wanted to say hi, so hi! Bonita -----Original Message----- From: OrinWells [mailto:orinwells@wells.org] Sent: Friday, January 20, 2006 3:38 PM To: WELLS-UK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Wells-UK] Wells DNA Study I will try to keep this short as my posts to other lists seem to have caused some confusion. I would like to recommend EVERYONE who can provide at least a 4 generation genealogy and has not done so already submit a sample to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Project. This is FREE and while a research project where they don't give participants the results, we can find them in the database. So we can include any Wells males in our Wells project who submit samples to Sorenson. Also, you will be helping the research to find ways of using DNA other than the y-chromosome for genealogical testing. Contact me for details on participating. We also can test male Wells through our project at Relative Genetics at $95 (US) for the 26 marker test or $135 for the 43 marker test. This is the best price we have seen and it won't last long. Again, contact me for information. The Wells DNA study results have been updated recently. I am working on bringing the family tables up to date. We have many more 43 marker results posted especially for those who participated in Phase I. Check them out here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wellsfam/dnaproje/results1.html Orin R.
