I stand corrected on Newnan, GA. It would be of interest to find an obituary for Green Marion Wells in Georgia. The murder was written up in the Atlanta Constitution. From what I have been able to determine, Rev. Kidd, the gang leader, was still alive until 1910. Sonja

Margaret, I don't think it is just coincidental. The two in Clark, Co., IN are living adjacent to each other, probably father & son. It also strengthens your identification of a Miss Newnam(n) as the second wife of James Wells Sr. of Surry Co., NC. Sonja

Margaret, Tony, & Vonda, I found the land record in Rowan Co., NC that identifies Dr. Anthony Newnam as the father of Daniel Newnam. I have also found a John Newnan & a John Nunan in Clark Co., IN in 1840. There is also a John Newnam of Davidson Co., TN involved in early Lincoln Co., TN land records. I find it interesting that the name Newnam is associated with two Wells families, as well as appearing to have a similar migration pattern as the DE Wells. Sonja

My current hypothesis is that Thomas Wells of Lincoln Co., TN decided to join half brothers Francis and James Wells in Clarke County, Indiana, instead of initially going to TN. From the Chancery Court Records, we know that he bought two tracts of land in Lincoln Co., TN from Travis Ashby in the 1820s, and another tract from Adam Biggs in 1830. Thomas Wells & Anthony Nunom (sic) are only auxiliary names on the 1808 grant. Dr. Anthony Newnam and James Wells, Jr. were contemporaries in Rowan Co., NC. After the Revolution, Anthony Newnam bought up several tracts of land in NC that had been confiscated from the Loyalists. Newnan Georgia was named in honor of General Daniel Newnan. Sonja, I thought our Thomas Wells did not arrive in Tennessee (from Indiana) until the 1820s. Do you think he may have gone to Tennessee by 1808 and then returned to Indiana? I seem to recall another Thomas Wells who was in Franklin Co., TN but I can't remember the date. I believe he was in Tennessee fairly early. Been off working on my Casey line so need to refresh my memory about the Wells "stuff". Fascinating stuff. Wasn't Anthony Newnam the name of a loyalist General during the Revolution?
