    2. LadyBonita (USA)
    3. I found this on ebay if anyone is researching these people: Offered is an undated letter, probably in the 1840's and addressed to Benj F. WELLES, Pultney, Steuben CO., NY and it from his sister Mary BLACK. She mentions their Mothers health. Also asks about Rebecca and the balky horse. Research suggests this is: Benjamin Franklin WELLS ( 1791-1885) in Kinderhook NY; son of Dr. Benjamin WELLS (1756-1813) and Sarah NELSON WELLS (1762-1853). The son Benjamin married Rebecca PRENTISS or PRENTICE in Pultney in 1814. His siblings were Mary who married John BLACK; James(1783-1855); Sylveter (1785-1871); Sarah (1787-1875); William (1792-1864); Henry (1794-1868); Theodosia (1796-1873); Elihu (1799-1867) and Julia (1804-1813). 3. Hmm. This is interesting. I thought I would harvest the information from the initial page of the site noted in the link in case someone recognizes this family from the posted information. It is rather interesting. I thought I may have seen this family as the Miles and Giles struck me as something I had seen before. Possibly in relation to the sinking of the Sutana at the end of the Civil war on April 21, 1865. - turns out I was correct. In fact I just followed the link for Miles on this site and he WAS the one killed as the site shows. I was not certain if we had anyone from this branch of the family test in the DNA study. I knew I corresponded with someone about it. After I checked my files, I found we DID test someone descended from Miles Wells. He is #344 and he matches the descendent of Henry Wells (the father of Isaac) including the several "mutations" that distinguish this branch from the Henry Wells family of Bucks county. See more in the next paragraph. To give credit, the site was posted by Gerry Grovenberg and I am sure that she wouldn't have posted the information if she didn't want it shared. This is only part of the page and larger collection of information on this family, so if you want to see it all go to the link in the original message. Pay particular attention to the Isaac Wells mentioned as the father of John I. Wells. If the information is correct, then Isaac was a son of Henry Wells and Nellie Van Vliet and we HAVE had a participant in the Wells DNA study tested from this family. This is participant #162 and all we know for now is that Henry appeared somehow to be connected to the Henry Wells family of Bucks Co., Pennsylvania b: Cir 1672 (an update from 1666 thanks to work by Marybelle Wells) I am suspecting that since we have several mutations that distinguish the branch from the Henry Wells family that this may actually be a parallel branch at best or a whole different Wells family altogether. Not to pick on Gerry, but the genealogy she has listed for the family above Henry is apparently incorrect since it tracks to the Long Island family of William Wells b: Cir 1608 England. The DNA proves this is not the right answer. I suspect she picked this up from someone else. I don't think we know at this point who the father of this Henry was. HOWEVER, Gerry also posts some VERY interesting information from the public records on this Henry Wells that may be well worth the effort for someone from this family to follow up on. It shows the father of Henry to have been a Zamuel Wells/Willis. The genealogy posted indicates this was Samuel Wells son of Joshua Wells of Long Island. I think if anything is wrong here it may be the association fo Zamuel Wells as being the same man as Samuel Wells. Like I said, they can not be from the same family according to the DNA. So Zamuel Wells has to have been someone else. Those interested in this family MUST see this page: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3206623&id=I01188 From the original link posted: "From: Kathy Wells - Nov 14, 2002 " A cousin of mine in Stark County, Ohio ran across this notice and sent it to me. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SCWBAIB/4515 Message Board Post: I'm going to list my line from its known beginning to the end of its Vermont residency first. January 22, 1894 Wheatland, Mich. Peacham and Marshfield are in the same general area as Newbury in Vermont. Last week I purchased a book titled; "History of Newbury, Vermont", (1704 - 1902, or "From the discovery of Coos country to the present time") by Frederic P. Wells, published St. Johnsbury, Vt., the Caledonian Co., 1902 The Rev. Charles Wells Hayes 1878 publication loses my line after showing Selah's marriage to Mehetable Tuthill and the birth and death dates of only one child, Nancy Jane 1774 - 1818 (who must have stayed on L. I. after her father went to Vt.) I was curious about the Vermont book, knowing, from another source I'll shortly name, that this is the area my people came from and was further encouraged that the book was wriiten by a Wells. It was a combination of delight and gnawing curiosity to find my people in this book. Delight because it was obviously, not only my family but the author's, Frederic P., and concern because in a 779 page book old Fred only devoted ONE page to his own family. Is this a piety unknown in the annals of family genealogists? One that only the Reverend Hayes could appreciate (he who saw churchmen everywhere in our tree, to the exclusion of more colorful personalities no doubt)? My answer came in the dated memeographed copies handed down to me and titled; "Family Tree of Henry Spencer Wells, 1842 - 1916" "(Prepared in 1968 by his grandson, Roger Hewes Wells)" Henry was one of Gideon's (above) sons and another step in my direction. It is a short presentation, lacking standard trees, siblings off the straight descendency and includes the maddening error of William I's Norwich parents (see my other post today). But what it does provide are some personal anecdotes and adds character and some color for studies too often dry and factual in our research and doubtless an oasis for the boggle-eyed name and number crunching that makes up the diet of most our research. In Roger's paper (Roger, my grandfather's cousin, was a professor at Bryn Mawr College) he originally offered up that; "The American Revolution (1775 - 1783) was a time of trouble for the families of Joshua III and Selah Wells. The British, after defeating Washington at the Battle of Long Island in August 1776, occupied the entire island. Some colonists, among them John Wells, brother of Joshua III, fled to Connecticut, and did not return until 1780 when the British evacuated the eastern part of the island. (They did not leave NYC until November 1783.) The colonists who remained on Long Island during the military occupation either supported the British out of conviction or were forced to swear allegiance to King George III. THE VERMONT HISTORIAN FREDERICK (sic) PALMER WELLS (died, 1935; he was a great-grandson of Selah Wells) BELIEVED THAT JOSHUA III AND SELAH WERE LOYALISTS (TORIES)." !!!!! Later Roger hears from his own Aunt Maude that this is poppycock. Maude, on the basis of Selah's war record (following) was admitted to the D. A. R. (Daughters of the American Revolution). This explains why the author Frederic, in his own lengthy work, gives such short biography on his own family....he was ashamed !!!!!!! Here are the facts (I only hope that an ashamed Frederic learned the truth between his 1902 publication and his demise in 1935). First from a corrected Roger; " In 1775, Selah signed the Association Test which all Americans who opposed the British were urged to sign. In the previous year (1774), the Continental Congress had passed the non-intercourse resolution, calling for an economic boycott of Britain. Selah's signature indicated that he supported the Congress. Selah's older brothers, Joshua IV and David, saw military service against the British. According to the Rev. Charles E. Craven (A History of Mattituck, Long Island, published in 1906, p. 143), Joshua IV was a corporal in one of the two militia companies from Southold which fought in the Battle of Long island. After Selah and his father moved to Amenia, Dutchess County, New York in 1780, the War Department records show that "Shelah" Wells of that county was on the roll of a militia regiment based in Albany County........" In the end Roger wrestles with the traitorous claims (believed by poor Frederic) but dismisses them, for Loyalists were extremely unpopular after the war (and during) and anyone holding such sympathies would have moved further away than Amenia. Indeed it seems just as likely that Joshua III and Selah left Long Island BECAUSE the British were all over it. Another explanation for the move is that Long Island, having been populated by progeny of farmers, in large family units, for over 150 years, was getting quite crowded. Here I recreate the sadly brief offerings of Frederic on his own family from his book (minus the damnable erroneous claim to Norwich, England and starting with Selah); V. Dea. SELAH, b. Southold, April 1, 1750; m. at Aquebogue, (L. I.) N. Y.. Mehitabel Tuthill, (b. April, 1753; d. Newbury May 6, 1838). They rem. to Amenia, Dutchess County, N. That is also some of the information from Roger Hewes Wells that is available only to those who have the aging memeograph copies in their posessions. Unknown to Frederic is that these were not the only Civil War volunteers who either died or were wounded. Henry Spencer Wells (son of Gideon, grandson of Ebenezer) was wounded twice, captured twice. His is another story for another post.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SCWBAIB/4514 Message Board Post: I posted this on both Young and Youngs forums at genealogy.com. "I'll post this on both spelling's forums. I'm a Wells, 12th generation descendent of William of Southold 1607/8 - November 13, 1671 (This is what is on his tomb in Southold, L. I., Suffolk County, N. Y.). My connection has been confirmed through the ambitious DNA study started by Orin Wells of the Wells Family Reseach Association. Not only did that William I., marry a Young(s) (Mary or perhaps "Marie") but there were a score of unions between our families on Long Island and beyond making my research yours as well. I have a request of you all. If you are showing William I. as being the son of William Welles, vicar of St. Peters Mancroft in Norwich England...... please delete him. It has been proven to my satisfaction that there is no connection between them. The William of Norwich did have a son William but he and his burial place have long been established in England. How this got started I know not, but the first place I see it is in Rev. Charles Wells Hayes' 1878 publication "William Wells of Southold and his Descendents, A. D. 1638 to 1878." Where Hayes got it I don't know but I've been all over this book and if you are familiar with it Hayes seemed to be delighted to crawl a few branches up allied family trees just to include a "deacon" or a "chorister" while totally avoiding any potentially controversial or salacious fact or narrative regarding any member of our family. I realize this isn't a grateful attitude towards an individual who must have spent years writing letters, traveling by horse, train and barge compiling his tome but the inclusion, at the head of the family, of an individual we now know, FOR A FACT, isn't our patriarch, continues its propagation and causes too many to question other, more reliable facts. I discovered this false trail again when I went to other, growing DNA genealogical websites and punched my numbers in, thereby producing other contributors who most closely matched my own. The false legend is repeated in other's family history and it's what prompted this posting on the Young(s) forums. Another correction I request is in the lineage of James Wells who married Bethia Griffin(g) [parents of "Mehitable" Wells who married Jeremiah Youngs (Dec. 1, 1760 - Jan. 5, 1832)]. The Young(s) who contributed his DNA to this study shows James Wells as being born in 1749 and the son of our William (IV. 1706- Aug. 22, 1778). Indeed, that William did have a son James and the 1749 birthdate is likely however the Rev. Hayes wrote that this James married an unknown Horton woman and provides 3 christian names for their 4 offspring and some spouses as well. The correct spouse of Bethia Griffin(g)(born 1751, Mattituck, L. I.) is James Wells born, circa 1735, and the son of Nathaniel Wells (son of Joshua, son of Wm. I.) 1705 to Sept. 26, 1781 and his wife Mary Parshall. The reason I'm confident of this correction is that William Wells of Southold (I.) had only two sons, William (II.) and Joshua and I am of the Joshua line. As it was my DNA code that brought this as a close match it stands to reason that this is the correct James Wells, not the other who is of the William II. line." To the Wells forum; I've had great difficulty with the Family Tree Maker program I'm using. No computer maven I'd thought I'd loaded it correctly but since, every time, I've popped the CD in I've had to click on "cancel" (not "retry") to bring it up and add to it. In addition, I walked, unknowingly, past the 10mb's of memory that any e-mail I'm using will send or receive and have been quite disheartened that, as a result, I've been unable to easily share the file, which now contains over 4,000 names. I apologize to those few with whom I've communicated with for the recent silence from my end. I'm certain that there are many researchers who desire to post only those "solid" and confirmable names, dates and connections, who have suffered or been frustrated by the loose and false information disseminated incautiously by either unindustrious (but enthusiastic) Wells' or, in the case of allied families chroniclers, too expediently slap-dashed an error that was of little concern to their own missions. To those I say take heart, participate in the DNA studies, post your concerns and questions and seek the increasing number of genealogical and geographic census CDs available at places like Ebay. Eventually I'll find a way to share what I have. I've recently decided that to wait until it is "finished" first is to never finish because this is work without end.

Apr 23 1961 Phoenix, Arizona) married Rosa B. Duncan. This Wells line has been difficult because of confusion with the two similar names of these brothers that we think even the census takers were confused with it as we cannot find Elby on any censuses anywhere until he married Eliza. If you are still researching this line I would be interested in what information you have, if any, on the other brothers and sisters.
