Alfred Wells Rev. Alfred Wells, pastor of the Baptist Church , of Delta, is a native of Wales, and came with his parents to Minersville, Penn., in 1859. He is the sixth of eight children, and was born August 8, 1846. At the age of seventeen he began the trade of carriage smith at Tamaqua, and worked about a year and a half, when he went coal mining, which business he continued to follow for several years. His education was acquired at common schools, and by making use of the hours that could be spared from his labor. At the age of twenty-nine he was ordained a minister of the Baptist Church, though he had for ten years before a licentiate. His first charge was at Mahanoy, Schuylkill County, from which he went to Coleraine, Lancaster County, next to Green Valley, Chester County, and in 1879 came to Peach Bottom Township, York, where he took charge of a small congregation at Glenwood School House. On the completion of the new church in Delta in 1884, he removed there. From the age of nine! teen until 1873 he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He married in 1870, Martha Boughey, a native of Pennsylvania, and has four children living: Adeline, William A., Josiah B. and Joseph T. Mr. Wells by his earnest devotion in his chosen work has been largely instrumental in building up a flourishing congregation in Delta. He has charge of the Drumore Baptist Church, Lancaster County. Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor
I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the ANDERSON and VEST Families. The first is a photograph of John ANDERSON and his wife Sada which was taken at the Anderson Studio in Kearney, Nebraska. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with John and Sada appearing to be in their 20's or 30's at the time. In addition to their names, someone has also written "Dad's oldest Brother" on the back of the photograph. The second photograph is one of Will VEST, his wife Sophia, and son Elmer. The photograph has no studio or location noted, but appears to have been taken in the 1890's with the couple in their 20's and Elmer just a baby. In addition to their names, someone has also written "Dad's sister" on the back of the photograph. The handwriting on both photographs is by the same person so I know that the photographs are connected in some manner. Based on limited research I believe that the first photograph is one of John Franklin Anderson b. 17 Oct 1860 in Rosebys Rook, VA to parents Abram ANDERSON and Jane DAVIS. John married Sadie May WELLS on 1 Jan 1896 in Divide, NE and died 19 Sept 1946 in Elmcreek, NE and is buried there. I was able to trace the couple through the various census records as follows: 1900 census of Gibbon, NE: John ANDERSON, age 39, born Oct 1860, married 4 years, born VA, parents born VA, a Farmer Sadie M. ANDERSON, wife, age 27, born Nov 1872, married 4 years, no children, born IA, parents born IA Abram ANDERSON, Father, age 73, born Oct 1826, a widower, born VA, parents born VA 1910 census of Elm Creek, NE: John ANDERSON, age 49, married 14 years, born VA, parents born VA, a Mail Carrier Sadie M. ANDERSON, wife, age 37, married 14 years, no children, born IA, parents born IA/OH Lillian P. DOBBINS, boarder, age 24, married 6 years, 2 children/1 living, born NE, parents born PA/IN Weldon DOBBINS, boarder, age 2, born NE, parents born NE 1920 census of Elm Creek, NE: John F. ANDERSON, age 59, born VA, parents born VA, a Mail Carrier Sadie M. ANDERSON, age 47, born IA, parents born IA/OH I believe that the man in the second photograph is William Francis VEST b. 22 Jan 1868 in Summers, WV to parents James Jefferson VEST and Elizabeth PLUMLY. William died 4 Nov 1939 in Kearney, NE. I believe that Sophia may be a younger sister to John Franklin ANDERSON, but I'm not sure. I have traced the couple through various census records as follows: 1900 census of Rusco, NE: William VEST, age 32, born Jan 1868, married 5 years, born WV, parents born VA/WV, a Farmer Sophia VEST, wife, age 24, born Jan 1876, married 5 years, 1 child/1 living, born IA, parents born WV Elmer W. VEST, son, age 4, born Feb 1896, born NE 1910 census of Rusco, NE: William VEST, age 42, married 15 years, born WV, parents born VA, a Farmer Sophia VEST, wife, age 34, married 15 years, 2 children/2 living, born IA, parents born VA Elmer VEST, son, age 14, born NE Richard VEST, son, age 6, born NE 1920 census of Rusco, NE: W. F. VEST, age 51, born WV, parents born VA/WV, a Farmer Sophia L. VEST, wife, age 43, born IA, parents born WV Elmer W. VEST, son, age 23, born NE Richard VEST, son, age 16, born NE I am hoping to locate someone from these families so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

This is very interesting and helpful, Mary Beth. My 3rd Great Grandfather Jeremiah Wells was b. 1801 in Georgia and in 1830 was living in Franklin Co., GA. There was a William Wells (said by many to be the son of this William) who in 1841 married Amy Roe in Franklin Co.. Amy's sisters married into my Glover line (which connects will Wells and allied lines for several generations afterward), and among the neighbors of William "Jr." and Amy Roe are cousins to Jeremiah Wells's wife, Elizabeth Dyer. One of Jeremiah's daughters took as her 2nd husband (after the Civil War) one Roe A. Harrison. I have often wondered if this was my Wells line, but can find nothing more than circumstantial evidence. Do we have DNA from any of William's descendants? Any comments or help would be appreciated. --John Wells Gillon, Lewisville, NC On 7/8/06, Mbmjlm22@aol.com <Mbmjlm22@aol.com> wrote: > > This Wells is not in my line but thought I would post this and maybe would > help someone. This Wells is not in my line but thought I would post this and maybe would help someone. This is a page from the Texas Patriot Ancestry Album published by Turner Publishing Company in Paducah, Kentucky. I do not have the date of publication. I am quoting all the info about him here. "William Wells, Sr. was born Aug. 16, 1798 to Charles and Sarah (Lewis) Wells in Franklin County, Georgia. When Wiliam was a young man, he, along with his parents and brothers and sisters moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee. William married there and he and his wife had three children, William Wells, Jr., Margaret, and Jemimah. William's wife was dead by 1832 and Jemimah died shortly after. The oldest two children, William and Margaret, went to live with their grandmother, Sarah, in Georgia. William, Sr. went to visit his father in Missouri and while in Missouri, William heard of the Texas Revolution against Mexico. William was looking for a new beginning now that his wife was dead and the land they were offering sounded good. He would have a place to start over and raise his children. Family tradition says that William joined up with Davy Crockett and came all the way with him and his band of Tennessee Mounted Volunteers. They entered the Alamo on February 8, 1836. According to an old newspaper account, William was the second man to step across the line that Travis had drawn in the dust with his sword. William died with the other brave men inside the Alamo fortress on the morning of March 6, 1836." Not sure of the accurace of this but it might be a starting point for someone. Mary Beth

Going back from her I show her father as Joshua Davis GROOVER, Sr married to Amy ROWE in Bulloch County on 2-10-1825. Before that I have Solomon GROOVER and Martha Elizabeth STANFIELD, but you say it was SHEFFIELD? And was Solomon's first name David? Before Solomon, I have John GRUBER II & Hannah LATSINGER, then John GRUBER & Mary Magdalene KALCHER, then Peter GRUBER & Maria KROHER. Some information on the GROOVER lines I got from a copy of a hand-typed and researched compilation of information by Robert GROOVER who died in Washington, DC back about 10-15 years ago. It was a history of the GROOVER names from the Salzburgers arrival in Ebenezer in the 1730's to 1979 if I recall. The copy I have is one of his original typed and printed copies that my father's sister had before she died in 1992, and my sister got it after her death and she gave it to me. The Civil War pension application for one of Joshua's and Amy's sons, Rowland Joseph GROOVER (who married Florida Douglass), is on-line via the State of FL. Bob Carter
