He died in that state when his son Joseph was about 7 years old. He came to MI, and then brought his widowed mother. Joseph R. Post Master of R.O. Sophronia Stephens was the daughter of Henry Stephens....Henry Stephens b. NY first or third non-indian settler in Oakland Cty. I'll have to dig through my files to let you know where the DOB info came from and will get back to you on this. It was my understanding that Albert fought for the Union Army during the Civil War while some of the other members of the family, maybe some of the brothers, took sides with the Confederate Army. None of this was really documented but I've been in touch with one of the living decendants, more directly involved with this research, who had living family that actually heard these rumors passed down through the family. If it would not be imposing, would you feel confortable with our corresponding via our own personal E-mail addresses? I'm okay with this, but direct E-mail is faster. It's up to you. In any case, One of Alberts daughters, Nan Welch, was my grandmother, who I never knew. For that matter, I never knew my father, Nan's son Leonard Gwartney, either! But somehow, I feel really "connected" to these peop! le, even though they've passed on long ago. Are you also following the lineage of all of the brothers, or just the one with whom you're conected? I'll gladly share what information I've gathered. The one thing I'm trying to find, without luck thus far, is a photo of my father or grandmother. I hope to uncover the "mystery" some day of the Wells/Welch situation. Keep in touch.
