Her parents were Joel Wells and Sarah Tarpley Wells from Pittsylvania Cty, VA. We always heard that through this line we were related to Cherokee. Catharine married Nelson Ivy and he died early, not sure how. We thought that he was our connection to the Indians, but not sure. Catharine and Nelson moved to Surry Cty, NC. She later married some man by the last name of Niston. We met some of the Niston's but they did no know or favor the Indians. Our family is also related to the Johnson familieis in NC and probably received some Cherokee blood there. The physical characteristics are more than evident in our family. I did not see a Effie Wells but they could still be related. I pulled a family treemaker genealogy report once off of the internet by Christine Bullock and it is the lineage of Barnaby Wells and his family in the Henry/Pittsylvnia counties of VA.
Jim, at times I've wondered if the entire biography is total fiction since confirming the details has been near impossible. However, just recently I did find Michael Moore, the man he was apprenticed to, on census records and so I'm encouraged to keep searching. And I certainly do appreciate your help. I did discover that there was no 16th Ohio Vol. Cavalry. Nor did the National Archives find a service record on him or pension file for his wife, Sarah. At the following site there is a 6th Ohio Cavalry mentioned which apparently fought at Gettysburg. I haven't found a roster yet, but there is no Charles WELLS with that company at the Soldiers and Sailors site. I'll request a service record search from the archive anyway; also a pension record using the name of his second wife, Lizzie. http://6th-ohio-cavalry.org/History/History.html Peggy _____ James Owens wrote: > Peggy, > > This history is flawed. Does anyone in the Wells list know anything about a Sarah Adele Wells-possible her middle name was Cecilia. She was born about 1807 in South Carolina and died 1878 in Washington, D. C. She was the wife of Elijah Sinclair who was a Methodist Minister in Georgia and South Carolina. She was also the mother of Carrie Belle Sinclair who wrote poetry and composed music during the Civil War. I suspect that Sarah Wells Sinclair had a sister by the name of Julia who married a lawyer named B. A. Wilson in Charleston, South Carolina. One of Sarah Wells's Sinclairs daughters-Ada, was living with the family of B. A. Wilson in Charleston in 1850 while her mother was still living in Richmond County, Georgia. Wilson's wife was recorded as Ada's aunt in one census and since I have found no Wilsons in the Sinclair family tree(my husband's line) I think Julia may have been a Wells too. Ada Sinclair was the wife of Cornelius Irving Walker who was a Confederate General and wrote and published some material on the Civil War. Myabe someone will recognize some of this. Peggy, This history is flawed. There was no 16th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. A Charles Wells served in the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. They were never near Gettysburg spending the entire war in the south. There was also a Charles Wells in the 3d Ohio Volunteer Cavalry but I was not able to develop a web site with any information on that Regiment. I did locate a history of the unit for sale on eBay No Ohio Cavalry unit was at Gettysburg. If, in fact, he served in the Civil War there may be a pension file for him because he left a wife and child. Good Luck, Jim Owens
The following biography has helped to develop a record of the life of my gr grandfather, Charles W. WELLS, and I post it with the hope that some other researcher might be able to add to it. He was a carriage maker by trade and traveled extensively. His first family was with Sarah Ann GREGG/GRIEG/GRAGE (no marriage record found yet). In 1856 their first child, Dema, was born in MN, in 1858 Edwin (my grandfather) was born in Cass Co., IL and Martha in 1860, MO. This family is shown on the 1860 Dunklin Co., MO census. He married Elizabeth (Lizzie) SHAIBLE (SCHIBBLE on the marriage record) on Oct. 22, 1869 in Lodi, MI. They are shown on the 1880 Jackson Co., Jackson, MI census with daughter Loda, age 9. If anyone is researching this line I would be glad to share information. To date I've not found a death record for Charles, nor have I found his parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth WELLS, on any census in OH. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Peggy Riggs Kopp < History and Biography of Jackson County Michigan, Pub. in Chicago: Inter-State Pub. Co., 1881 Pages 748 and 751 Charles WELLS, carriage-maker, was born in Berkeley county, Va., Sept. 4, 1830. When a small child his parents, Nicholas and Elizabeth WELLS, emigrated to Hocking county, Ohio, in 1831, took up Government land and made a farm, where he resided until his death, which occurred in 1869. The subject of this sketch apprenticed to a man by the name of Michael MOORE, and remained four years. He then worked as a "jour." and traveled over the Western States. In 1849 he crossed the plains to California, but his health failing, he returned to Ohio. In the spring of 1851 he came to Ann Arbor and followed his trade a short time. In 1861 he enlisted in the 16th Ohio Vol. Cav., Co. K, and served three years, was in all the engagements of the regiment up to the battle of Gettysburg, where he was injured by a cannon ball coming so close to his head that it knocked him down, and it was supposed a horse ran over him. After the war he came back to Ann Arbor and remained there until 1878, then came to Jackson and has remained since. He married Miss Elizabeth SHAIBLE, a native of Germany; she was born in 1847. They have 1 child--Loda. In polities Mr. W. is a Republican.>

As if we didn't have enough junk genealogy out there, now we have to deal with Wikipedia. This is allegedly an on-line encyclopaedia and information database. The problem is it open for all to enter and edit. I stumbled on this while looking for something else. I found this under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wells_(general) (actually under the cache - "Hugh Wells, a descendant of an old English family, was born about 1590 in the county of Essex, England. he was married in 1619, and emigrated to America in 1635. He remained in Boston for a time, and subsequently aided in founding a colony in Hartford, Connecticut. He died in Wethersfield, Connecticut, in 1645. Thomas Wells, the first child of Hugh Wells, was born in Colchester, England, in 1860, and was taken with his parents, in 1635, to America. " Now the good part is this: If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly or redistributed by others, do not submit it. Which gives people with facts the ability to get in and correct this sort of garbage. Turns out this page has already been edited and the ancestry stripped. But it will remain in google cache for a very long time. There is also an endless log of people who have done things to an article. Trying to find who they are is another issue. A clue on this is the following note: "I own the website that the material was taken from, and as indicated in the resubmission (hopefully in a proper format), the material is in the public domain as written. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Vermontcivilwar>Green Mountain Sailor 12:10, 4 August 2006 (UTC) " I am unable to identify this person or website, but someone needs to help them understand that Hugh Welles is a wrong ancestor here. Anyone interested in this General William Wells might find the following article interesting. There is a statue of the man in Battery Park, Burlington, Vermont AND apparently at Gettysburg. http://www.vermonthistory.org/journal/73/06_Cross.pdf Apparently he received more promotions than any other civil war soldier from Vermont rising from private to brevet Major General in 4 years. There is a photo of William Wells in this article. I keep telling myself that we need to put together a web page with all the Wells generals. Orin R. Wells Wells Family Research Association P. O. If interested, contact Helenh@pdq.net I have NOTHING to do with this book or person. -----Original Message----- From: Helen [mailto:Helenh@pdq.net] Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2006 7:26 AM To: GEN-BOOKS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GB] Ten Mile Country-New Hardback Cheaper than Paperback!-See Some Names The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families, Howard L. Lecky, 1950, 1977, 1993. Red clothcovered hardback with gilt printing, 6-1/2 x 9-1/4, one published states that it has 775 pages, while another lists 677 pages. This is another new book, still in the shrinkwrap that I had set back for myself, but I had an opportunity to see the original booklets (first put out in serial form on the 25 May 1950) and now know that my own people would not be in this magnificient book, so will offer it here. This is a massive collection of genealogical data on the early settlers who lived within the verge of the Tenmile Creek that traversed Greene and Washington Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. After 1750, the Tenmile Country became the place to settle or stop over in for the huge migration of Scotch-Irish, Germans, and a few English who extended the American settlement beyond the Alleghenies. "Migration to the Monongahela took place over three main routes: along the National Pike via Winchester, Virginia; through the Shenandoah Valley to the head of Cheat River and from there to the Monongahela; and along the Lincoln Highway to Ligonier, Pennsylvania and thence along Jacob's Creek to the Monongahela. >From the time of the Frencg and Indian War to the end of the 18th century, the tributaries of the Tenmile Creek would be inundated by pioneers - many of them German or Scotch-Irish, some of them spillovers from the great migration into Kentucky, and still other travellers and immigrants who passed through Baltimore en route to one of the great migration trails." This book is just filled with genealogical data, genealogical family sketches-some going on for a number of generations, lists of those who served in the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War militia companies that were the only protection in this yet untamed and still very unsafe area that became Greene, Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette and nearby counties of present day Southwestern Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia, present day West Virginia, Western Maryland and eastern Ohio. You will find many families from Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and even the Carolinas. There are well over 500 family histories of varying length that take the lines both earlier and on down. The genealogical sketches cover or touch on more than 2,000 main families who settled in the Upper Monogahela area. There are maps, illustrations, facsimilies to enhance the book, along with an index, and the first part of the book is a wonderful history of the area.
