In Canada the "Tories" are called "United Empire Loyalists". (This might help with your searching.) The UEL were granted land by the king for their loyalty to Britain. There are some lists of United Empire Loyalists online and Land Grants can be found. The Tories had their land and goods confiscated during the Revolutionary War, and many of my ancestors gathered at Caldwell's Manor, Missisquoi County, Lower Canada (Quebec), which was a tract of land rather than just a building. This was a common gathering place for UELs from Vermont, New York, etc. Most of the UELs settled in Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec), so you can look for your ancestors there. Some of my ancestors fought on both sides, so that is something to check out. They moved back and forth a bit between being a "Tory" and a "Patriot". I don't know why. I hope that some of this information helps you in your searching. I found the following biographies in the Yale College Alumni and based on the parentage of her husband, Jonathan WELLES, being as Thomas WELLES and Martha PITKIN, I have removed Catharine SALTONSTALL from the Jonathan WELLS listed in W001 as his parents as John WELLS and Sarah CURTIS. Biographical sketches of the graduates of Yale College : with annals of the college history, page 2_273/4 "Jonathan Welles, the eighth child and fourth son of the Hon. Thomas Welles, of Glastonbury, Connecticut (a member of the Governor's Council from 1751 to 1761), and a nephew of the Rev. Samuel Welles (Yale 1707), was born in Glastonbury, August 9, 1732. His mother was Martha, daughter of the Hon. William and Elizabeth (Stanley) Pitkin, of East Hartford. During the year 1753-54 he taught the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, and then for over a year until April 1756, he served as a Tutor in the College. He then settled on a farm in his native town, and married Catharine SALTONSTALL, a sister of his classmate, born in 1734. He was sent to the General Assembly as a representative in 1760, and to twenty-six subsequent sessions in the next twenty years. In 1770 he was made a captain in the militia, and in 1773 received a commission as Justice of the Peace. Meantime he was largely entrusted with other public business. About 1774 he became embarrassed in his affairs, and was obliged to petition the Assembly for protection from imprisonment for debt. He died in Glastonbury, January 17, 1792, in his 60th year. After the death of his first wife he married Mabel, widow of Jonathan Hills, and daughter of Jonathan and Mabel (Olmsted) Stanley, of East Hartford. Heidi, I was just looking at your Ancestry tree and the letter and article you have posted. Underneath the letter you mention the Ords mixing with the Wells and having lots of photos of them. WILLIAM WELLS. This venerable pioneer died at his home in Elk Prairie, last Friday morning, April 15, 1887 in the 74th year of his age. The Wells family has been so prominent in the southwest quarter of the county as to deserve more than a passing notice. The grandfather of the deceased removed with his family from Pennsylvania to Montgomery county Kentucky, at a very early day. His family included 5 sons and 3 daughters. Two of the sons remained in Kentucky, one came to Illinois and died in Pike county, where the other two removed to Giles county, Tennessee. These were William and Jonathan. William had married a Miss Livingston in Ky., a sister to John Livingston, so well known to old citizens of Mt. Vernon. In Giles county, William, a son of William Wells was born September 16, 1813. In 1819, William Wells removed to Lauderdale county, Alabama. Pioneer story for Jonathan - In 1823 Jonathan Wells came to this county, and stopped in a cabin west of where Ben Bullock lives 3 or 4 miles west of Mt. Vernon. Then he lived on the creek above the old Tolle mill place, then located in Wolf Prairie, where he died Aug. 21, 1869 in his 79th year. His children were Green Beery, who married Susannah Maxey, a daughter of Jack Maxey, Nov. 15, 1832, by whom had two sons, Stephen L. and John W. and 3 daughters, one of whom, the wife of Calvin Ireland, went Oregon--G.B. taking for his second wife Phebe Allen, the daughter of Rhodam Allen, Aug. 10, 1846, by whom he had 3 sons and 3 daughters-- Littleman, who married Susan Hays, Feb. 1 1837, and after her death, Clarentine, daughter of Green Scott, and went to Ark;--Jerusha, wife of Carroll Dare, mother of Simon and 3 girls;--Jonathan , who married Elizabeth C. Keller went to the Mexican war, came back and died;--, Polly Ann, who married Edward Carter, Aug. 24, 1841;--Lucinda, wife of ! Jas. G.
